Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream lets you build an island full of Mii characters, and personality is one of the biggest decisions you will make for each one. Your choices during Mii creation decides how they talk, move, react, and even what colour their house ends up being. There are 16 personality types (most likely based on the MBTI typing system) spread across four groups, and this guide covers all of them, including both US and UK/PAL names, so no matter where you are playing, you will find exactly what you need.
It is also worth noting that the personality system in Living the Dream is largely unchanged from the original Tomodachi Life and Tomodachi Collection: New Life. If you played either of those games, the slider mechanics and personality categories will feel very familiar. What the new game does bring is improved animations and a wider pool of dialogue lines for each personality, so your Miis feel more expressive than ever before.
How Does the Personality System Work in Tomodachi Life?
When you create a Mii, you adjust five sliders: Movement, Speech, Energy, Thinking (Attitude), and Overall. However, it is important to know upfront that the Overall slider has no effect on personality. You can set it wherever you like without it changing the outcome. Only the top four sliders feed into the final personality calculation.

The game adds up your Movement + Speech score and your Energy + Thinking score separately, then uses those two totals to assign a personality from the chart below.
Both combined scores are measured across the same four bands:
| Band | Score Range |
| Low | 0 to 3 |
| Mid-Low | 4 to 7 |
| Mid-High | 8 to 11 |
| High | 12 to 15 |
Your Movement + Speech total determines the column you land in, and your Energy + Thinking total determines the row. Together, those two figures point to exactly one of the 16 personalities.
Note on slider skipping: The Speech and Thinking (Attitude) sliders skip the value 4, jumping straight from 3 to 5 at the midpoint. This gives those two sliders slightly more weight in the final calculation, so keep that in mind when targeting a specific personality.

All Four Personality Groups Explained
The 16 personalities divide into four groups. Each group determines your Mii’s general behaviour, house colour, and even their clothing style when they first move in.
| Group (US Name) | Group (UK/PAL Name) | House Colour | General Trait |
| Considerate | Easy-Going | Yellow/Pastel Orange | Friendly, empathetic, positive |
| Outgoing | Energetic | Pink/Red/Orange | Passionate, social, lively |
| Reserved | Reserved | Green/Teal | Calm, creative, introverted |
| Ambitious | Confident | Cyan/Blue/Purple | Direct, driven, self-assured |
Each group has a signature house colour, though you may notice slight shade variations between individual Miis within the same group. The colours listed above represent the dominant tone for each group rather than a single fixed shade.
Considerate (Easy-Going) Personalities
Considerate Miis are the warmest and most emotionally in tune residents on your island. They dream a lot, smile often, and always put the people around them first.
| Personality (US) | Personality (UK) | Description |
| Sweetie | Softie | Gentle, sensitive, and emotionally in tune with others |
| Cheerleader | Optimist | Bright, upbeat, and always lifting the mood around them |
| Buddy | Carer | Trustworthy and supportive, always looking out for friends |
| Daydreamer | Dreamer | Laid-back and idealistic, drifts through life at their own pace |
To land in the Considerate group, push your Energy and Thinking scores high (8 to 15) while keeping Movement and Speech on the lower side.
Outgoing (Energetic) Personalities
Outgoing Miis are arguably the most energetic residents on the island. They jump into situations without hesitation, make friends easily, and bring a lot of noise and fun with them wherever they go. Because of their naturally social nature,
Outgoing Miis tend to make friends faster than any other group and are also among the quickest to develop romantic feelings for other island residents.
| Personality (US) | Personality (UK) | Description |
| Charmer | Charmer | Radiant and stylish, naturally draws attention and adapts quickly |
| Go-Getter | Adventurer | Bold and mischievous, jumps into things without hesitation |
| Merrymaker | Bubbly | Cheerful and sociable, turns any situation into a good time |
| Dynamo | Hot-Blooded | Fiery and passionate, charges ahead and sweeps others along |
To land in the Outgoing group, push all four sliders high. Both your Movement + Speech and Energy + Thinking totals need to be in the upper ranges.
Reserved Personalities
Reserved Miis are the quietest residents on your island. They keep their emotions close to their chest, think deeply before acting, and tend to be the most creative and self-sufficient of the four groups. They are slower to warm up to other Miis, which means friendships and romances take a little longer to develop, but once formed those bonds tend to feel more considered and meaningful.
| Personality (US) | Personality (UK) | Description |
| Strategist | Patient | Calm and conflict-avoiding, quietly dependable |
| Perfectionist | Perfectionist | Careful and diligent, values order and getting things right |
| Observer | Introvert | Cool and quiet, keeps emotions hidden and thoughts private |
| Thinker | Thinker | Thoughtful and composed, analyses everything before speaking |
To land in the Reserved group, keep both slider totals low. Slow Movement, Polite Speech, Flat Energy, and Serious Thinking all push you toward this group.
Ambitious (Confident) Personalities
Ambitious Miis get straight to the point. They are decisive, goal-driven, and tend to hold strong opinions. They appreciate efficiency and are usually the first to act on a plan. Socially, they fall somewhere between Reserved and Outgoing — confident enough to make connections quickly, but selective enough that not every interaction becomes a close friendship.
| Personality (US) | Personality (UK) | Description |
| Achiever | Busy Bee | Productive and competitive, stays focused on goals |
| Visionary | Leader | Commanding and inspiring, takes charge and leads others |
| Rogue | Individualist | Independent and direct, prefers doing things alone |
| Maverick | Headstrong | Bold and plain-speaking, acts quickly on their own terms |
To land in the Ambitious group, aim for high Movement + Speech but low Energy + Thinking. Think someone who is direct and quick but serious and measured in their energy.
What Do Personalities Actually Affect?
Personality is more than just a label. Here is what it changes in the game:
| What It Affects | How It Changes |
| Behaviour and dialogue | Each personality has unique reactions, speech patterns, and daily habits |
| House colour | Your Mii’s house colour corresponds directly to their personality group |
| Clothing style | Starting outfit colours also match the personality group |
| Interactions | How they sit, react, and get along with neighbours varies by personality |
| Animations | Walking style, sitting posture, gestures, and default facial expressions all differ by personality |
| Friendship speed | Outgoing Miis form bonds the fastest; Reserved Miis are the slowest to open up |
| Romance chances | Sociable personalities are more likely to develop feelings sooner; introverted ones take more time |
| Event reactions | During concerts, arguments, dreams, and other island events, each personality type reacts in its own distinct way |
It is also worth noting that Miis within the same group still behave differently from one another. For example, a Charmer and a Dynamo are both Outgoing, however their individual traits, conversational style, and reactions are quite distinct.
Outgoing Miis tend to make friends and develop crushes the fastest, while Reserved Miis take longer but often form deeper bonds.
Personality Compatibility
Personality plays a quiet but meaningful role in how Miis get along with each other. Outgoing Miis are the most socially flexible and tend to get along with almost everyone. Considerate Miis mesh especially well with other Considerate and Outgoing types. Reserved Miis can find common ground with Ambitious ones, given their shared preference for calm and purpose over chaos. That said, the game never locks out any pairing entirely. With enough time and the right interactions, any two Miis can become close regardless of personality. Compatibility simply affects how quickly and smoothly that process tends to go.
Can You Change a Mii’s Personality Later?
Yes, and you can do it at any time. To change a Mii’s personality after creation, simply navigate to your Residents menu, select the Mii you want to adjust, and choose Personality at the bottom of their profile screen. This takes you back to the same five sliders from Mii creation, and you can reposition them however you like.
However, keep in mind that changing a personality will alter that Mii’s behaviour and dialogue, which can have a knock-on effect on their relationships with other island residents. It is worth thinking through whether the change fits the current state of your island before you commit.
Quick Tips for Targeting Specific Personalities
- To get Considerate, push Thinking toward Relaxed and Energy toward Intense, while keeping Movement and Speech moderate to low.
- To get Reserved, keep everything toward the lower end of each slider, favouring Slow, Polite, Flat, and Serious settings.
- To get Ambitious, go high on Movement and Speech but keep Energy and Thinking low and serious.
- To get Outgoing, push all four sliders toward the higher end across the board.
- The specific sub-type within each group depends on whether your totals fall in the lower or upper half of each range, so small adjustments can shift you between, for example, a Buddy and a Daydreamer even within the same group.
