A viral Tennessee middle school football incident has put 16-year-old Addison Hunnicutt at the center of a heated debate after she ran onto the field and tackled a 13-year-old player during a game in Winchester. Hunnicutt was later charged with assault and disorderly conduct, but she says there was more behind her decision than what viewers see in the viral footage.
The incident happened Tuesday night, August 18, 2026, during a game between South Middle School and Cornersville Middle School at Franklin County High School. Hunnicutt says she believed her younger brother was being attacked and that nobody else was stepping in.

Why Did Addison Hunnicutt Tackle the 13-Year-Old Football Player?
The confrontation began after South Middle School scored a touchdown and extra point. A brief scuffle then broke out between players in the end zone, prompting referees to throw flags as the athletes began returning to their respective huddles.
That was when Hunnicutt entered the field.
Video showed the 16-year-old jumping over a fence or barrier before sprinting toward a 13-year-old South Middle School player involved in the earlier altercation. She wrapped him up and brought him to the ground with a hard tackle. When the boy tried to get back up, Hunnicutt appeared to push him toward the ground again before adults intervened.
Officials ended the game and cleared the stadium. No injuries were reported. School resource officers met Hunnicutt as she left the field, and she was released to her parents, who had been attending the game.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office later charged her with assault and disorderly conduct.
Hunnicutt has since said she believed her younger brother was being treated unfairly during the game. She claimed she saw another player grab her brother’s face mask and spin him around before he was hit in the ribs.
“That’s when I started to be like, no, I’m done watching this,” Hunnicutt told NewsChannel 5.
She insists the tackle was not an attempt to randomly attack another child.
“I wasn’t going after this kid just to go after him. That wasn’t my intention at all,” she said.
According to Hunnicutt, seeing what she believed was happening to her brother while nobody intervened pushed her to act.
“Seeing what they were doing to him and no one stopping it, that kind of made me the last choice. Somebody has to stop this.”
Her mother, Elizabeth Chumbley, said she did not approve of her daughter’s decision to enter the playing area, although she understood why Hunnicutt reacted after seeing her son on the ground.
“I made sure she understood quickly that her behavior was inappropriate, and you should not have jumped over the fence,” Chumbley told WTVF.
She added:
“But I’m seeing my son on the ground being attacked. This wasn’t just a football play. This is him on the ground being physically attacked by this other player.”
Family attorney David McKenzie also defended Hunnicutt’s motivation, saying:
“She was protecting her brother from abuse on the field when the officials refused to do so.”
The consequences have gone beyond the criminal case. Franklin County Schools issued Hunnicutt a lifetime ban from all district properties, while the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association banned her from attending Cornersville Middle School home and away athletic events for one year. School officials praised staff, coaches and school resource officers for their response and said additional security measures would be introduced at future games.
Meanwhile, the father of the tackled player, Brandon Taylor, has defended his 13-year-old son and rejected attempts to justify or make light of the incident.
“He had every reason to be angry, yet he still showed restraint,” Taylor wrote.
