⚠️ SPOILER ALERT: This guide contains full story spoilers for Moonvale Episode 3. If you have not completed the episode, come back once you have.

A simple tape recording should not be enough to shake an entire investigation. Yet in Moonvale Episode 3, that is exactly what happens. The recording Ash pulls from Room 31 does not just raise questions but rewrites everything the group thinks they know about Adam. Here is a detailed breakdown of what is on the tape and what the conversation reveals.

What the Tape Actually Says: Full Transcript

When Ash first discovers it in Adam’s room at the motel, she wants to listen to it immediately. Eric, however, pushes back and argues that it should go straight to the police. The disagreement turns into a brief falling-out between the two, and Ash leaves with the tape.

The next problem is finding something to play it on. Ash eventually tracks down a tape recorder in her father’s basement, and that is when we finally get to hear what Adam had been keeping in that room:

Which Voice was of Adam?

After listening to the recording, Ash immediately confirms that the boy’s voice was that of Adam. However, she never confirms which of the two kids’ voices she meant. Based on instinctive impressions, it seems more likely that the second kid who is following Kid 1 has a deeper voice. So, it is possible that Adam was simply following the other kid. However, without any confirmation, we can’t say for sure.

So, for now, we can only assume that one of the two kids was Adam:

Who Does the Second Voice Belong To?

Neither child’s name is revealed on the recording. However, the episode points fairly clearly in one direction.

Based on the clues so far, both Ash and MC suspect the girl’s voice to belong to Sophia Holland. It is already established that Sophia went missing from Red Log Pines for the first time as a child, more than 15 years ago. Two children in that same forest, around the same period, is not a stretch. The theory that Adam and Sophia had a history together long before the current events makes the most sense, and this recording connects to the start of it.

That said, only Adam’s voice is confirmed in-game. The second kid’s identity remains a theory.

Was There A Recording on The Other Side of the Tape?

Now, this is an important angle, since we get the prompt to ask Ash if there is a recording on the other side of the tape. Before Ash can respond or check, she receives a text from someone we don’t know yet. It is a lean man with lots of tattoos and artistic pictures all over his profile. Apparently, he is in big trouble and asks Ash to help and meet him at “Maple Street, behind the Crossing.

Ash leaves immediately, while leaving us to wonder if there is, in fact, something on the opposite side of the tape. It is quite likely that there is more important evidence on the tape since Adam kept it so safely. Maybe there is an actual recording of what the kids saw in the forest, or maybe an explanation of what mystery lurks in the forests of Red Log Pines.

Breaking Down the Conversation in Adam’s Tape

The voices belong to children, not adults. That places this recording well in the past. Given that Sophia Holland’s first disappearance happened more than 15 years ago, the timeline lines up.

They are in a forest at night. The flashlight, the tree roots, and the general tone of the conversation all point to the forest outside Red Log Pines. This does not seem to be a casual trip. They are heading somewhere specific, and one of them is uneasy about it.

The recorder keeps cutting out. Kid 2 mentions it has already stopped working three times. One of the children is deliberately recording the journey, which means they wanted documentation of where they were going. That suggests they already suspected something worth recording was at their destination.

They snuck out. Kid 2 is worried about getting caught, which tells us these are children doing something they know adults would not allow, at night, in a forest.

They knew exactly where they were going. Kid 1 says “this is the spot” without any hesitation. They were not wandering. They had either been there before or were told where to go.

The tape cuts off before anything happens. The recording ends the moment they arrive and decide to wait. Whatever they came to see is not on the tape.

What Were They Waiting For?

The tape does not answer this, but there are a few angles worth considering based on what the episode establishes.

PossibilityWhy It Fits
Something connected to Billy BlakeBilly disappeared from Red Log Pines around the same time. There is a reasonable case for Adam and Sophia being present for, or connected to, whatever happened to him
A pre-arranged meeting or eventKid 1 knows exactly where “the spot” is, which points to a plan rather than curiosity
Returning to document something they had already seenIf either of the child had witnessed something before this night, going back with a recorder would make sense as a way of getting proof

The Unknown’s line to MC, that “you wouldn’t want anything to do with Adam if you knew what he did”, makes this evidence even more interesting. Maybe what happened in the forest that night had something to do with what Unknown is trying to warn MC about. Even Adam’s closest friends didn’t know about his possible connection to Sophia. The fact that they disappeared together and might have a childhood connection makes Adam’s character seem quite shady.

Why Adam Kept the Tape

Adam was not holding onto a childhood memento. The tape was in his motel room at the time he disappeared, which means he brought it back to Red Log Pines intentionally.

Whether it was evidence, leverage, or something he felt he needed to confront, the recording ties the current investigation directly to something that happened in that forest more than a decade ago.

How This Connects to the Bigger Picture

The tape is one piece of a larger puzzle. For more details on Sophia Holland’s disappearance, Charlie’s investigation, and what happens at Sawmill by the end of Episode 3:

What to Watch For in Moonvale Episode 4

The tape ends before revealing what the children actually saw. That moment is likely central to everything else the story is building toward. Going into Episode 4, the key questions are:

  • Was it really Sophia with Adam in the forest?
  • Is Billy Blake connected to what they were waiting for?
  • Why did Adam bring the tape back to Red Log Pines now, after all this time? And why did he put it in a hidden safe?
  • What exactly does the Unknown know about what Adam did?

Well, yet again, we are left with more questions than answers. If, in fact, Adam was involved in some questionable activities in his past, it would make Unknown a more trustworthy figure in the game. However, if Adam was simply dragged into something beyond his own understanding, he could very much be a victim himself.

As we wait for Episode 4, we will be discussing many more perspectives and theories for Moonvale, so make sure to stick around. Thank you for reading!
