⚠️ SPOILER ALERT: This guide contains plot details and story spoilers for Moonvale Episode 3. If you have not played through the episode yet, proceed at your own risk.

One missing person in a small town is already alarming. Two on the same night? That is something else entirely. Moonvale Episode 3 wastes no time pulling the rug out from under you, and the name Sophia Holland is at the centre of it all. If you are trying to piece together who she is and what she has to do with Adam, this guide walks you through every beat of it.

How the Sophia Holland Mystery Begins

Everything kicks off right after Eric walks out of the police station. He video calls MC and shares something that changes the entire direction of the investigation. While Eric was at the station reporting Adam missing, Bucket revealed something significant to him.

Eric immediately pulls everyone together in the group chat and drops the bombshell: on the same night Adam vanished, someone else disappeared too. Her name is Sophia Holland.

This is already a serious red flag. Red Log Pines is a small town, so two people disappearing on the exact same night is highly unlikely to be a coincidence.

The Tape in Room 31

Right as the group processes this news, a conflict starts to form. Ash is far more focused on the tape she discovered in Adam’s room than on cooperating with the police. Eric, however, wants to hand the tape over to Bucket.

This leads to a direct clash between the two over what to do next. Rather than waiting, Ash takes the tape and leaves the Greenside Motel, making it clear she intends to listen to it before handing it over to anyone.

While Ash deals with the tape situation, Charlie reaches out to MC and proposes they investigate Sophia Holland to find a possible link to Adam’s disappearance. He starts combing through available records and turns up four people named Sophia Holland living in Red Log Pines.

The problem is that very little is known about the Sophia who went missing, which makes identifying the right person genuinely difficult. MC messages all four of them and waits to hear back.

A 15-Year-Old News Article

As the search continues, Charlie digs into the archives of the Dark Times and finds a news article related to Sophia Holland’s disappearance. The discovery is immediately shocking because the article is more than 15 years old.

The article reports that a child went missing. This confirms that Sophia Holland had gone missing once before, over fifteen years ago. So her recent disappearance is not the first time she has vanished from Red Log Pines.

Violet and Julie Enter the Picture

To find out more, Charlie asks Ash to speak with Violet, who works at Becky’s Diner, and see if she or anyone in town knows something about Sophia. Violet eventually responds with a useful lead. Her co-worker, who also happens to be Charlie’s alleged girlfriend, Julie, knows something.

MC also gets the option to share one of Julie’s profiles in the group chat, pointing her out as the most likely match from the list of four Sophia Hollands. Julie confirms her identity and shares what she knows:

  • She and Sophia were not close, but they did know each other from school
  • Julie saw Sophia on the very night she disappeared
  • Sophia came into the diner that evening and appeared visibly tense
  • She used the diner’s phone to call someone
  • Sophia left without stopping to speak to Julie

The Mystery Phone Number

Building on Julie’s account, Julie passes along the phone number that Sophia called from the diner that night. Julie had already tried the number herself but got no answer. MC tries calling it next, and the call goes unanswered again.

The number stays silent for now, but it will come back into focus in a significant way later in the episode.

Meanwhile, Charlie starts exploring a possible connection between Sophia and Billy Blake (the kid whose father beat him up), another child who reportedly went missing in the forest years ago. He then heads out to meet Julie in person to dig further into Sophia’s background and see what else she remembers.

Someone Else Is Already Investigating

Back on MC’s end, one of the four Sophia Hollands who received a message finally responds, though not in a friendly way. She lashes out at MC for the contact. However, buried inside her one-sided rant is a critical detail: someone else is also trying to reach all the Sophia Hollands in Red Log Pines.

MC and the group are not alone in this search, and that raises an uncomfortable question about who else is looking and why.

The Tape Recording: Two Kids in the Forest

With a tape recorder sourced from her father’s basement, Ash finally listens to the audio from the tape found in Adam’s room. What she hears connects several threads at once:

  • Two children can be heard walking into the forest together while recording their conversation
  • Ash recognises that one of the voices sounds like Adam
  • MC and Ash both suspect that the second voice could belong to Sophia

This directly links Adam and Sophia, and it suggests their connection stretches all the way back to childhood. However, if Adam and Sophia were indeed so close during childhood, why doesn’t anyone else in the group know her? And Julie, who is not even an immediate friend of Adam knew Sophia enough to recognise her.

An Unknown Number Calls MC

Shortly after, MC receives a call from the same number that Sophia called on the night of her disappearance. The call connects briefly and switches to a video call before cutting off without any exchange of words.

So, it is clear that the caller wanted to make sure of MC’s identity and switched to a video call for this. On the other hand, they made sure not to reveal their own face or voice. At this point, this can paint the caller in either a colour of suspicion or mere skepticism.

Charlie’s Final Call: Driving to Sawmill

Charlie’s last video call with MC happens while he is behind the wheel. He shares a detail that Julie told him during their meeting:

  • Sophia’s family had an expensive alarm system installed in their home
  • However, on the night Sophia disappeared, not a single camera recorded a thing
  • The footage, for all practical purposes, simply does not exist

Charlie then tells MC he is driving out to Sawmill to investigate something. When he arrives, there is a clear police presence at what appears to be an active crime scene. Officers block him from entering through the main entrance, but Charlie slips in through a different way.

Inside, photographers are documenting the area. Then a covered body comes into view.

Charlie gasps “Adam” and the call cuts off. The face of the body is never shown.

Who Is the Body? What the Evidence Suggests

The identity of the body is left deliberately unconfirmed, and the face remains hidden throughout. Based on everything uncovered in Episode 3, here is what the evidence points toward:

TheorySupporting Evidence
Sophia HollandStrongly supported: her disappearance is confirmed, her history of going missing is established, and Adam remains the central unresolved thread of the story
AdamCharlie reacted with his name, though killing the story’s main driver this early would be a bold narrative move
Someone else entirelyThe body’s identity is never confirmed on screen

Community opinion largely leans toward the body being Sophia’s. Charlie’s reaction may reflect panic and instinct rather than a confirmed identification, given that the face is never actually revealed.

Key Clues About Sophia Holland: A Summary

Pulling everything together, here is what the episode establishes about Sophia Holland:

  • She went missing more than 15 years ago as a child, confirmed by a Dark Times archive article
  • She resurfaced in Red Log Pines and then disappeared again on the same night as Adam
  • On the night she vanished, she came to Becky’s Diner, appeared tense, and used the diner’s phone to call an unknown number
  • Despite having a full alarm system, no cameras in her family home recorded anything on the night she disappeared
  • At some point, police suspected her family to be behind the disappearances.
  • The audio on Ash’s tape suggests that most likely, she and Adam entered the forest together as children, and this incident could very well be linked to her disappearance 15 years ago.
  • Someone else is also actively trying to contact all Sophia Hollands in the area.

What to Watch For Next

Episode 3 closes without resolving the biggest questions it raises, setting the stage for what comes next:

  • Who owns the mystery number that Sophia called, and why do they keep disconnecting when MC tries to reach them?
  • What happened in the forest when Sophia and Adam were children?
  • Why does the alarm footage not exist from the night Sophia disappeared?
  • Is Sophia’s first disappearance fifteen years ago connected to Adam?
  • And ultimately, what did Adam do that the Unknown has been warning MC about all along?
