When Duskwood first appeared, it left players immersed in a tense and mysterious story that blended mobile storytelling with interactive choices. Its atmosphere, haunting narrative, and unforgettable real characters made it more than just another mystery game, it introduced a new phenomenon within its niche. With the arrival of Moonvale, many players have been asking a pressing question: Are Duskwood and Moonvale connected?

The answer is both simple and nuanced, and understanding it requires considering how the two games are structured and what their narrative intentions suggest.

Note: Article Below Does Contain Indirect SPOILER!

Is Moonvale a sequel to Duskwood?

The short answer is no. Moonvale is not a direct sequel to Duskwood. The original Duskwood story has its own beginning and end, and its central protagonist’s arc is considered complete. Instead of continuing that journey, Moonvale presents a new story set within the same universe.

That said, this does not mean the two games are entirely disconnected. There are threads between them, but not in the straightforward way a sequel typically delivers. Instead, what exists is better described as a side-story but a narrative overlap that nods to Duskwood without depending on it.

The Code Connection

One of the more intriguing aspects of this link is the special Duskwood code players receive at the end of Duskwood. By entering it into Moonvale, an exclusive side-story becomes available. This hidden layer introduces returning characters and references that tie directly back to the earlier game, offering glimpses into what happened after the events in Duskwood.

Without this code, Moonvale functions as a completely independent experience. It can be played and enjoyed without any prior knowledge. With the code, however, the experience deepens, especially for players who are eager to reconnect with familiar characters and unresolved mysteries.

Spin-off or Continuation?

It may be most accurate to view Moonvale as a spin-off. It inherits the same universe and spirit but is built around fresh storylines and characters. At the same time, the optional side-story can feel like a continuation in spirit, offering closure and small revelations for those still curious about the aftermath of Duskwood.

To sum it up:

  • Moonvale is a standalone game with its own narrative.
  • The Duskwood tie-in exists only for those who unlock it, serving as an added layer rather than the main structure.
  • A true Duskwood 2 has not been announced, and the creative direction suggests expansion of the universe rather than direct continuation.

The Everbyte Player’s Dilemma

For many who grew attached to Jake, Jessy, Richy, and the rest of the Duskwood cast, this approach can feel bittersweet. Moonvale represents Everbyte’s ambition to grow beyond a single story, yet it doesn’t deliver the traditional sequel that some longed for.

The side-story, though brief, offers something valuable: a sense of closure. Familiar voices reappear, lingering questions find partial answers, and players get a glimpse at life after Duskwood. But the heart of Moonvale belongs to its own mysteries.

However, with most of the Moonvale story still left to unfold, players might receive more insight and closure about the Duskwood’s ending.

Final Thoughts for Now

So, are Duskwood and Moonvale connected? Yes, but not in the way a sequel would be. They share a universe, and through the optional code, a bridge exists for fans who want to carry forward fragments of the old story. Yet Moonvale stands firmly as its own tale, free from the direct continuation of Duskwood.
