Hayden Panettiere, the beloved actress known for Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, has died at 36. Emergency responders were called to an apartment at the Judson Mill Lofts complex in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16, after an acquaintance reported an unresponsive woman in cardiac arrest. She was pronounced dead at the scene after paramedics attempted advanced cardiac life support measures.

Her death came just five days before her 37th birthday. In the weeks before she died, Panettiere had reportedly been looking forward to seeing her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, reconnecting with former Nashville co-stars and celebrating her birthday. At the same time, her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, had given fans a deeply personal look at the struggles she had faced away from the spotlight.

As with several high-profile deaths under investigation this year, federal authorities have also stepped in — see our coverage of the DEA joining the investigation into Panettiere’s death as toxicology results remain pending.

Emergency responders arrived at approximately 1:51 p.m. after receiving the 911 call. Paramedics carried out advanced cardiac life support measures for an extended period before Panettiere was pronounced dead at around 2:32 p.m.

Dispatch audio referenced a possible overdose and CPR in progress. However, the official cause and manner of death had not been determined as of August 23, 2026.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death. Toxicology testing and further investigation remained pending. Police said the preliminary investigation indicated no foul play or suspicious circumstances.

Her Father Shares a Statement After Her Death

Panettiere’s father, Skip, whose full name is Alan Lee Panettiere, released a statement mourning his daughter and asking for privacy.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

The family asked for privacy as they mourned her loss.

Hayden Panettiere Was Planning Her 37th Birthday

One of the most heartbreaking details surrounding Panettiere’s final days is that she was reportedly making plans for her upcoming birthday.

She died on August 16, just five days before turning 37 on August 21. A source close to the actress said she was excited about seeing her daughter Kaya, who lives in Germany with her father, former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.

The source said she was “so excited to see her and was telling everyone how much she was looking forward to spending time with her.”

Panettiere had also reconnected with several former Nashville co-stars and planned to attend a Charles Esten show in Greenville around the same period.

Her final Instagram post, shared July 27, now carries an especially poignant weight. It showed Panettiere smiling alongside photographer and director Randall Slavin, with the caption:

“Good times and good friends.”

Hayden Panettiere’s Memoir Revealed the Private Battles Behind Her Fame

Months before her death, Panettiere released This Is Me: A Reckoning in May 2026. The memoir explored her childhood in entertainment and the personal struggles that followed her rise to fame.

She wrote about growing up under the guidance of her “momager” mother, body dysmorphia fueled by tabloid attention and postpartum depression following Kaya’s birth in 2014. She also detailed opioid and alcohol addiction, domestic violence involving a man she referred to as “Brian,” and the loss of custody of her daughter.

Panettiere described the abuse in devastating terms:

“One night he busts up my face so badly I don’t leave the house for weeks.”

She also spoke publicly about wanting to start over and leave the world a better place by being honest about mental health and the experiences she had survived.

Another devastating chapter involved her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who died suddenly in 2023 from an undiagnosed enlarged heart.

Her Final Film and a Career That Started Before Her First Birthday

Panettiere’s final film was the psychological thriller Sleepwalker, released in January 2026. Co-stars later described her as appearing to struggle and feeling lonely during production, although she remained professional and warm while working on camera.

Her entertainment career began remarkably early. Panettiere appeared in commercials when she was just 11 months old before becoming a familiar child actress. She later appeared in Remember the Titans in 2000.

Her breakthrough came with Heroes, where she played Claire Bennet from 2006 to 2010. She later became widely known for playing Juliette Barnes on Nashville and Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise.

Behind that success, however, Panettiere had spent years dealing with the pressures of childhood fame, addiction, relationships, motherhood and recovery.

She had spoken about being exposed to prescription pills at a young age and going through multiple periods in rehabilitation, including an eight-month stay around 2020–2021.

Panettiere is survived by her parents, her daughter Kaya and her extended family. Her death at 36 ends a career that began before she was even a year old, while her final months showed an actress who was still looking ahead, reconnecting with people she cared about and sharing more of her story with the world.
