Collin Gosselin’s Abuse Allegations Against Kate Gosselin: What He Reveals Before Memoir Release

Collin Gosselin spent much of his childhood in front of television cameras, growing up in a family whose private life became a public story. Years later, he is offering a deeply different account of that experience, describing alleged mistreatment, isolation and a childhood that he says bore little resemblance to the family viewers watched on screen.

In an interview with ABC News correspondent Juju Chang, published on October 12, 2026, Collin revisited the events he says changed his life. His account comes just one day before the release of his memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood. While his allegations raise troubling questions about his experiences growing up, Kate Gosselin has previously disputed reports of abuse and defended the decision to send him for treatment.

Collin Gosselin Says His Childhood on Reality TV Was a Lie

Collin became known to audiences through TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus 8, which began airing in 2007 and followed his parents, Jon Gosselin and Kate Gosselin, as they raised their eight children.

The family included twin daughters Madelyn and Cara, along with sextuplets Leah, Hannah, Alexis, Joel, Aaden and Collin. Viewers watched the children grow up while their parents navigated the demands of raising a large family.

However, Collin now says the programme did not accurately reflect his experiences away from the cameras.

“Simply put, my whole life that I lived was a lie,” he told Chang.

He added: “All the things you see on TV, lies.”

Jon and Kate announced their separation in 2009, with the news appearing at the end of an episode that aired in June of that year. Following their divorce, Kate was granted primary custody of the children, and the series continued as Kate Plus 8, focusing on her life raising the eight children as a divorced mother.

Collin’s memoir revisits this period through his own recollections, challenging the public image associated with the family’s television appearances. His account focuses on what he says happened privately as the marriage broke down and the family’s circumstances changed.

Collin Gosselin Alleges Abuse and Isolation After His Parents’ Divorce

In his ABC News interview, Collin described what he alleges was a period of isolation at home following his parents’ separation.

He claimed his mother isolated him from his father and made him sleep in a locked room in the basement. He also recalled an incident involving his earlobe that he says attracted the attention of a teacher.

According to Collin, his teacher noticed swelling after his mother allegedly dragged him across a room by his earlobe. He said the incident prompted him to speak to school staff about what had happened.

“My teacher saw … and then I talked to my guidance counselor, and I told them about it,” Collin said. “And my mom was not very happy that I spoke about that.”

Collin said he was subsequently removed from school while in the fourth grade. He also recalled being frightened when child protective services became involved, saying he was “too afraid to say anything.”

He further alleged that, after attempting to run away, his mother restrained his hands and feet with zip ties and locked him inside a basement room. In earlier accounts, he described spending much of his time there after he stopped attending school.

These are serious allegations, but they remain Collin’s account of the events. The interview alone does not establish the outcome of any child-protection investigation into the specific incidents he describes.

Why Was Collin Gosselin Sent to a Residential Treatment Facility?

One of the most significant parts of Collin’s story concerns his placement in a residential treatment facility as a child.

He said his mother had him removed from the family home days before his 12th birthday and placed in an institution. He alleges that he received medication there and had very limited contact with his family.

Recalling what he was told about the placement, Collin said: “This is for your own good.”

He also suggested that his mother’s public image and financial interests played a role in their conflict.

“I threatened my mom’s income, I threatened her image, and people will do anything to protect their reputation, especially my mom,” he said.

Kate has previously offered a different explanation for the decision.

In public comments made in 2016, she said Collin had been sent for treatment to address educational, social and behavioural challenges. She described the decision as necessary for his well-being, saying it was “the best thing I can do for him right now.”

Kate also publicly described Collin as having special needs and said he was enrolled in a programme intended to help him develop skills to manage his challenges. Collin disputed that characterisation, telling Entertainment Tonight that he did not see himself in those terms.

The disagreement continued in subsequent years. In 2019, Jon said Collin had spent approximately three years at the facility and questioned the diagnoses associated with his placement.

In a later response published by People, Kate said Collin had received multiple psychiatric diagnoses and that the decision to admit him followed years of outpatient treatment that she believed had proved insufficient.

Kate said emergency room doctors made the admission decision after an incident involving what she described as one of Collin’s attacks or outbursts and his use of a weapon. She also cited safety concerns involving herself, Collin and his siblings.

The family’s accounts differ substantially. Collin disputes the way his mental health and treatment have been characterised, while Kate has maintained that professional treatment was necessary.

In 2016, when asked about reports of abuse that Collin allegedly disclosed to staff members, Kate rejected the allegations.

“I’m in the public eye,” she said. “I have been investigated many times…. It’s always unfounded, obviously.”

The Emotional Note Collin Says He Sent to Jon Gosselin

Collin’s account also describes an attempt to reach his father while he was living at the treatment facility.

He recalled that, after approximately a year there, he wrote Jon a note using crayon and arranged for a friend to deliver it. According to Collin, the message expressed his desperation to leave.

The note read:

“I’m counting on you to get me out of here. Daddy, I love you. Save me.”

Collin said his father subsequently pursued legal avenues to secure his release. He eventually moved in with Jon and his sister Hannah, who had also chosen to leave Kate’s care.

The family dispute over Collin’s treatment and living arrangements had already attracted public attention. Jon said he had not been fully informed about his son’s placement and pursued custody after learning more about the situation.

Reports indicate that Jon was awarded temporary custody in 2018, when Collin was 14, before Collin eventually moved in with his father full-time.

Collin has also described feeling isolated from his siblings during his time in treatment. His recollections of that period form part of a wider account of separation from his family, although the circumstances and interpretations surrounding his placement remain disputed.

Collin’s 2023 Psychological Evaluation and Mental Health Dispute

Another subject addressed in the memoir is Collin’s mental health history.

He writes that he underwent an independent psychological evaluation in 2023, following years of public discussion about the educational, social and behavioural challenges his mother said he had experienced.

According to Collin, the evaluation did not identify any mental health diagnoses at that time. He told Chang that he was not surprised by the reported result but wanted the assessment documented.

“I knew I’d go through life every day as a functioning member of society. It’s just that I needed it on paper,” he said.

ABC News reported that it contacted the doctor Collin identified as having conducted the evaluation, but the doctor declined to comment.

The reported findings should not be interpreted as a comprehensive assessment of Collin’s medical history or as a resolution of the family’s wider disagreement. They also do not, by themselves, settle questions about earlier diagnoses or the reasons for his treatment.

In 2023, Collin and Jon discussed the family history in the documentary series Dark Side of the 2000s. Jon questioned whether Collin had received a definitive diagnosis, while Kate maintained that multiple psychiatric diagnoses had been made over the years.

Their competing statements underline the importance of distinguishing Collin’s personal account from Kate’s explanations and independently documented medical information.

Collin Gosselin Hopes to Reconnect With His Estranged Siblings

Now attending college and studying finance, Collin says he would welcome the opportunity to rebuild his relationships with his siblings, despite the family conflict and years of estrangement from several of them.

When Chang asked whether he would be open to reconnecting with his six other siblings, Collin said he “would love to.” He also acknowledged that their relationships might never return to what they once were.

He addressed them directly, emphasising that his feelings had not changed.

“No matter what’s happened or what was said, no matter how things look from the outside, I love you, I always have and always will,” he said.

In an August 2025 TikTok video, Collin said he rarely posted on social media and expressed regret that he did not have a relationship with his siblings. He said he wished they knew who he was because, in his view, they did not know one another.

His relationship with Madelyn, also known as Mady, has been particularly contentious in public. In 2023, she posted statements alleging that Collin had threatened members of the family and describing behaviour she said she would not accept. Those statements represent her public position and do not independently establish the allegations made by either side.

The siblings have not presented a single unified public account of their experiences. Although Collin has expressed a desire for reconciliation, that does not establish whether his siblings are ready to reconnect.

Kate Gosselin’s Response to the Renewed Abuse Allegations

Kate’s earlier statements remain important context as Collin prepares to publish his memoir.

In 2024, Kate’s attorney indicated in comments reported by Fox News that she would not respond to the abuse allegations. In June 2026, as attention grew around the forthcoming book, Kate addressed public discussion of the family dispute on social media. When followers suggested legal action over the allegations, she said she believed the rules governing defamation claims involving public figures made such a challenge difficult.

Collin also made another allegation on social media in June 2026. He claimed his mother had written in a diary that she had to pray to God to stop hitting him when he was two years old. The diary passage has not been independently established by the sources cited in the original reporting.

ABC News reported on October 12, 2026, that it contacted Kate and TLC for comment ahead of the memoir’s release but received no response. Jon declined the network’s request for an interview for that story.

The absence of a new response does not establish whether Kate or TLC agrees or disagrees with each individual claim. Kate’s previously documented denials and explanations remain part of the public record.

What Collin Gosselin Reveals in His New Memoir

Collin announced his memoir earlier in 2026, describing it as an opportunity to tell his story in his own words after years of public attention surrounding his family.

In a June interview with Us Weekly, he said:

“My life was always broadcast to millions, but what was actually happening in my life was never shown — in fact, much of it was deliberately kept hidden.”

He continued:

“For years, other people told my story through headlines, television episodes and public speculation.”

He also explained what he hoped readers would take away from the book:

“This book is about truth, survival, resilience and finding my voice after years of being silenced. If my story helps even one person feel less alone or gives them the courage to tell their own, then every difficult page was worth writing.”

Titled In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, the memoir is published by Grand Central Publishing, an imprint of Hachette Book Group. The publisher lists the book at 304 pages, with hardcover, ebook and audiobook editions.

Its promotional description presents the book as Collin’s account of experiences he says were concealed by the family’s public image, including alleged mistreatment, a basement room and medication he says he received as a child. These descriptions summarise his account rather than constitute independent findings about the disputed events.

When Does Collin Gosselin’s Memoir Come Out?

The memoir is scheduled for publication on October 13, 2026, one day after the ABC News interview was published.

Conclusion: Collin Gosselin Shares His Side of a Long-Running Family Dispute

Collin Gosselin’s forthcoming memoir brings renewed attention to a family story that began on reality television but has continued through years of public disagreement. His allegations about his childhood, his account of residential treatment and his recollections of reaching out to his father offer his perspective on experiences he says were not shown to viewers.

At the same time, Kate Gosselin has previously rejected abuse allegations and defended the decision to seek treatment for her son, while Jon and the siblings have offered their own public statements about aspects of the dispute.

Collin says he hopes to reconnect with his siblings, even as he prepares to share his account with readers. The memoir may give audiences a more detailed understanding of his perspective, but its publication does not independently resolve the family’s contested claims. The distinction between personal recollection, attributed allegations and independently established information remains essential.
