The investigation into Hayden Panettiere’s sudden death has taken a major new turn. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has joined the multi-agency probe after the actress died at 36 on August 16, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina, while toxicology results remain pending.

Panettiere was found unresponsive at Judson Mill Lofts on Easley Bridge Road. Emergency crews responded to a cardiac-arrest call at around 1:51 p.m., performed advanced life support and CPR, and pronounced her dead at approximately 2:32 p.m. While an apparent overdose has emerged as one investigative possibility, authorities have not officially determined her cause or manner of death.

DEA Joins Hayden Panettiere Death Probe as Investigation Continues

The DEA’s involvement was first reported and confirmed on August 19 by multiple outlets. Greenville Police Department remains the lead local investigative agency, working alongside the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

Exactly why the federal agency joined the investigation has not been publicly disclosed. Because the DEA investigates violations involving controlled substances, its participation can be relevant when authorities are examining possible drug activity. However, its presence does not prove that drugs caused Panettiere’s death or that a crime occurred.

The agency has previously assisted in high-profile investigations involving suspected drug-related deaths, including the case surrounding actor Matthew Perry. Panettiere’s case, however, remains unresolved.

What Happened Before Hayden Panettiere Was Found Unresponsive?

One person familiar with the situation told The New York Times that an apparent drug overdose led to Panettiere’s cardiac arrest. Dispatch audio from the Greenville County Fire and Emergency Management online feed, corresponding roughly with the time and location of the emergency, also included references to an “overdose” and statements that “CPR is in progress.”

Reports further stated that a device used to dispense Narcan, a medication intended to reverse opioid overdoses, was found on a mattress near where Panettiere was discovered. It remains unclear whether Narcan was actually administered.

That distinction is important: authorities have not publicly identified a substance Panettiere may have taken, and the reported overdose has not been established as her official cause of death.

Hayden Panettiere Autopsy Found No Trauma, But Key Answers Are Still Missing

A preliminary autopsy completed on Monday, August 17, found no trauma that contributed to Panettiere’s death.

“No signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death.”

Greenville Police have also said their preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.

The biggest unanswered questions are now tied to toxicology and other investigative studies. According to the latest reporting, those results could take several weeks. Until they are completed, the official cause and manner of death remain pending.

Police Report Reveals Who Was With Hayden Panettiere

A heavily redacted Greenville Police Department incident report offers another glimpse into Panettiere’s final moments.

Her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach Hickerson, were at the apartment and placed the 911 call. Responding Officer Matthew Bryan described seeing EMS and fire personnel performing CPR on an unresponsive white female patient.

Zach identified Panettiere as his brother’s girlfriend and was described as “very emotional while EMS were working on Hayden.” The report stated that “Brian did not become emotional until EMS declared her officially deceased.”

Brian also showed officers a “bag of medication” Panettiere was taking. The publicly released report redacts the medication details, meaning the contents have not been publicly established.

Body-worn-camera footage was recorded, while CCTV footage reportedly captured the three individuals coming and going from the apartment complex. After Panettiere was pronounced dead, the brothers were escorted from the apartment.

Importantly, Hickerson has not been accused of causing Panettiere’s death.

Hayden Panettiere Had Previously Spoken About Addiction and Recovery

The investigation has brought renewed attention to Panettiere’s public discussions about addiction, alcohol and drugs. In her May 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she described the realities of addiction and the need for immediate relief during difficult moments.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Addicts aren’t patient. When we’re shaking, nauseated, anxious, lonely or depressed, we need instant relief that sends us into that pain-free place called denial.”

She previously told People in 2022 that as she grew older, “the drugs and alcohol became something I almost couldn’t live without.”

Panettiere wrote that she was introduced to drugs as a teenager:

“Whatever they were — and I suspect they were some sort of amphetamine — I didn’t care,” she wrote. “At 16, they were the gateway drug that ushered me toward the good of pharmaceuticals and the downfall of addiction.”

Her struggles became intertwined with her role as Juliette Barnes on Nashville, whose storyline included substance abuse and postpartum depression. Panettiere stepped away from filming in 2015 to enter treatment for depression and later spent eight months in a treatment centre in 2021.

Chronic Pain Was Another Major Part of Panettiere’s Recent Life

Addiction was not the only difficult chapter Panettiere had discussed. She had also spoken about significant physical pain and injuries.

Her hairstylist of three years, Erick Orellana, said:

“I know that she was struggling with her back, being able to get around. It was a back injury that was making it hard for her to walk.”

In a May interview with Women’s Health, Panettiere recalled injuries from physically demanding acting work, including being thrown from a zebra while filming Racing Stripes and repeatedly falling while learning to figure skate for Ice Princess. She also said two vertebrae had been smashed into her neck.

A year before her death, she woke up with “nothing but pins and needles from my waist down.” She said doctors could not determine the cause and wondered whether she might be “paralyzed for the rest of my life.”

Friends and associates said she continued experiencing serious back pain in the months before her death and had been photographed using crutches.

Brian Hickerson and Hayden Panettiere’s Complicated Relationship

Panettiere and Brian Hickerson began their on-and-off relationship in 2018. Their history included domestic violence allegations, and Hickerson previously faced arrest and served time in connection with charges involving Panettiere.

The pair reportedly reconnected weeks before her death and travelled together from California to South Carolina the day before she died. Police also visited a Hickerson family residence in the days afterward.

Panettiere’s mother, Lesley Vogel, told NBC News on August 18:

“This person in her life that we have been trying to get rid of for quite some time was with her at her death, and that was Brian Hickerson.”

Vogel also said:

“There was a lot of history in the past that Brian has enabled Hayden many times and this is why her father and I had been concerned for a long time about him.”

She described Panettiere as an extraordinarily talented person and discussed the pressures facing young performers in the entertainment industry.

Regarding Panettiere’s younger brother Jansen, who died in 2023, Vogel said:

“I just feel that she’s with her brother and they’re at peace.”

Vogel said she initially had limited information about the investigation and planned to speak with a detective. She later referred to a narcotics investigator joining the case.

Family, Daughter and the Career Hayden Panettiere Left Behind

Panettiere’s father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed her death and described her as:

“an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

Her family has asked for privacy.

Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko. Kaya primarily lived with her father in Ukraine, and Panettiere had reportedly planned to visit her in the coming weeks.

Panettiere began working as a performer during childhood and became widely recognised as Claire Bennet in Heroes and Juliette Barnes in Nashville. Her film credits included Remember the Titans, Ice Princess, Racing Stripes and the Scream franchise.

Her death came only months after This Is Me: A Reckoning was published, a memoir in which she confronted addiction, child stardom, postpartum depression, chronic pain and other painful periods of her life.

What Happens Next in the Hayden Panettiere Death Investigation?

For now, the biggest development is also the one that leaves the most questions unanswered: the DEA has joined the investigation, but officials have not explained why.

The autopsy found no contributing trauma, police have reported no indications of foul play, and an apparent overdose remains an investigative possibility rather than an established fact. Toxicology and other testing could take several weeks, meaning the official cause and manner of death may not be known immediately.

Until those results are released, no specific drug or controlled substance can responsibly be identified as the cause of Hayden Panettiere’s death.

Hayden Panettiere’s official cause and manner of death have not been determined. Toxicology and other investigative testing remain pending. References to a possible overdose, medications or controlled substances describe preliminary information, reported statements or investigative leads and must not be treated as an established cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing, and information may change as authorities release additional findings.
