According to the Express, the shocking ordeal unfolded in 2000 after Savident met a man named Michael Smith at Napoleon’s bar in Manchester. The meeting took place during an event held for World Aids Day, where Smith reportedly convinced the then-62-year-old actor that he was a drama student.
The pair later went back to Savident’s flat, where they talked until the early hours of the following morning. What began as a seemingly ordinary conversation soon turned into a violent confrontation that left the actor fighting for his life.

John Savident Recalled the Terrifying Moments
During the subsequent court trial, Savident described the horrifying moment the attack unfolded.
He explained that he had gone to his bedroom to charge his phone when Smith suddenly attacked him.
“I suddenly felt somebody come up behind me and whizz me round, so I was face down on the bed, and then I felt a prick on my throat. He said something like ‘I bet you have never met a schizo before’, which was really quite frightening.”
The knife wound caused Savident to lose two pints of blood after he was stabbed in the neck.
After calling the emergency services, the actor reportedly pleaded with them to keep the incident out of the headlines, telling them that he played “Fred Elliott in Coronation Street.”
Judge Harold Singer later told Manchester Crown Court that Savident could easily have bled to death because the knife came dangerously close to a major blood vessel.

What Happened After the Attack?
Despite the life-threatening injuries, Savident eventually returned to filming Coronation Street. Viewers noticed he wore a plaster on his neck during episodes, with Fred Elliott explaining the injury as a “butchering accident.”
Police arrested Smith in Canal Street on the day of the attack. According to the Express, officers found his clothes soaked in Savident’s blood.
Smith was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and with robbing the actor of his wallet, keys, credit cards, cash, a silver money clip, jewellery, and even an invitation to Coronation Street‘s 40th birthday celebration.
During the trial, Smith dismissed his legal counsel and claimed he acted in self-defence, alleging that Savident had made sexual advances towards him.
Savident firmly denied the allegation, telling the court that Smith had accompanied him to the flat because he intended to offer advice on breaking into the acting profession.
