Tyler Duckworth Cause of Death Remains Undetermined as Police Reveal What Happened
According to a Grand Forks Police Department report obtained by Page Six, officers responded to Duckworth’s apartment at approximately 11:45 a.m. on August 11 after residents living below noticed water coming through their ceiling.
The water was traced to Duckworth’s apartment, where officers found an overflowing bathtub. Duckworth’s body was discovered inside the bathroom, positioned against the door and making access difficult. The person who initially responded reportedly tried to shut off the water but could not determine whether Duckworth was still alive.
Police said Duckworth had been seen the previous day, although authorities have not publicly established exactly when he died.
An autopsy has now been conducted, but officials have not released the final findings. Toxicology testing and other forensic work are still pending. Reports indicate the complete process could take 10 to 12 weeks or longer, while the North Dakota State Forensic Examiner’s Office has said the full process could take at least 90 days.
Importantly, authorities have not indicated that Duckworth was the victim of homicide. Investigators reportedly found no outward signs of trauma, including gunshot or stab wounds, and the preliminary investigation did not point toward foul play.
That does not reveal how he died. The absence of apparent foul play does not establish whether the death resulted from a medical event, accident, substance-related cause or another circumstance. Until the autopsy and toxicology results are finalized, the cause remains undetermined.
Duckworth’s mother, Joni Duckworth, publicly confirmed his death on Facebook on August 13.
“My son, Tyler, passed away earlier this week. Cause of death has yet to be determined. I will post on Facebook about services as soon as his dad and I figure it out.”
The family later held a private funeral service on Saturday, August 22, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. Fellow Challenge competitor Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio attended and later paid tribute to Duckworth, describing him as “the brother I never had.”
The timing of Duckworth’s death has also added another emotional layer to the story. On July 31, 2026, he attended a Challenge Mania fan event in Minneapolis with franchise veterans Rachel Robinson, Brad Fiorenza, Tina Barta, Paulie Calafiore and Mark Long. Duckworth shared photographs from the gathering on Instagram on August 2, writing that Challenge Mania knew how to bring the “BEST of the BEST” together. It was his final Instagram update.
Duckworth first became known to MTV viewers through The Real World: Key West in 2006. He went on to compete on The Challenge, including The Duel, The Gauntlet III, Cutthroat, Rivals, All Stars 2 and All Stars 3.
His biggest run came with consecutive victories. He was part of the winning Red Team on Cutthroat in 2010 before returning for Rivals the following year alongside his former Real World: Key West castmate Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio. The pair ultimately won the season together.
Duckworth then spent roughly a decade away from the competition before returning for The Challenge: All Stars 2 in 2021 and All Stars 3 in 2022. During his comeback, he told Entertainment Weekly that he had never deliberately retired from the franchise, joking that he assumed producers had simply lost his number after he won two seasons consecutively.
Away from reality television, Duckworth worked in education. Local reporting identified him as a teacher at Valley Middle School in Grand Forks, while KNOX Radio reported that his LinkedIn profile listed three years teaching social studies there. In a 2021 Entertainment Weekly interview, Duckworth explained that he had been teaching middle and high school when the opportunity to appear on All Stars unexpectedly came along. His mother also told local media that he used his own travel experiences when teaching subjects including history and geography.

When Will Tyler Duckworth’s Official Cause of Death Be Released?
There is currently no confirmed date for the release of Duckworth’s official cause of death. Authorities are awaiting toxicology results and completion of the wider forensic investigation, which could take 10 to 12 weeks or longer.
The reported overflowing bathtub, water leak and location where Duckworth was discovered describe the circumstances of the scene but do not establish a medical cause of death. For now, his official cause of death remains undetermined.
Duckworth’s back-to-back Cutthroat and Rivals victories, his partnership with Devenanzio, and his later All Stars appearances made him a recognizable figure across generations of The Challenge viewers. His final Challenge Mania gathering with fellow franchise veterans came only days before his death.
As fans and former castmates remember Duckworth, the final forensic findings are still pending.
