The Green Lantern mystery is getting bigger, and Lanterns Episode 2 is adding a character who could become one of the DCU’s most intriguing wild cards. HBO Max has released new promotional stills showing Paul Ben-Victor as Antaan, an original extraterrestrial character making his debut in the episode titled “Trust Fall.”
Antaan has no established DC Comics counterpart under that name, but his official description has already sparked one major theory: could he secretly be a reimagined version of Atrocitus? There is no confirmation from HBO, DC Studios or the production team, but the similarities are certainly enough to get Green Lantern fans talking.
It’s a busy stretch for genre television more broadly, with Yellowjackets also confirming a November 20 premiere date for its fourth and final season around the same time Lanterns is expanding its own mystery.
Paul Ben-Victor’s Antaan Arrives in Lanterns Episode 2
The new promotional stills offer the first official visual look at Ben-Victor as Antaan. His casting was announced in April 2025, when the character was described as having a recurring role in the series.
HBO’s official character description paints Antaan as an extraterrestrial obsessed with uncovering the truth and taking revenge against those responsible for wronging his people. He is also described as having a deep hatred for the law and wanting to deliver justice entirely on his own terms.
“an extraterrestrial devoted to exposing the truth and exacting vengeance against those who wronged his people. Consumed by a deep and unrelenting hatred for the law, he is determined to deliver justice on his own terms.”
That description is especially interesting in a series built around the Green Lantern Corps, an organisation traditionally connected with maintaining order across the universe. Antaan’s attitude toward authority immediately creates the potential for a serious clash with Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
But there is another reason this character has caught attention.
Original extraterrestrial characters entering established universes aren’t unique to Lanterns — the Star Wars Ahsoka Season 2 trailer similarly teased new threats alongside Anakin’s return and Thrawn’s preparations for war.
The Antaan and Atrocitus Theory Explained
Antaan is not an established DC Comics character, making his introduction unusual compared with the many familiar names connected to Lanterns. The fact that he is an original creation has led to speculation that HBO could be using him as an alternate identity or reimagined version of an existing Green Lantern villain.
The biggest theory points toward Atrocitus.
Atrocitus, originally known as Atros, is one of the most important villains in Green Lantern mythology. His history is rooted in devastating personal loss after the Manhunters destroyed his home region, killing his wife and children. That tragedy pushed him toward revenge against the Guardians of the Universe and their forces.
He debuted in Green Lantern Vol. 4 #25, during the late-2007/early-2008 publication period, with 2008 commonly identified as his debut year.
The parallels with Antaan are obvious enough to explain the theory. Both are extraterrestrial figures shaped by catastrophic loss and revenge. Antaan is specifically described as seeking vengeance for the wrongs committed against his people while rejecting established law.
Still, the distinction is crucial: Antaan is not confirmed to be Atrocitus.
Neither HBO nor DC Studios has announced that Ben-Victor is playing Atrocitus, and there has been no official connection between Antaan and the Red Lantern Corps. Antaan could simply be an entirely new character created specifically for Lanterns.
Ben-Victor also already has a DCU connection. He previously voiced Bulldozer of Easy Company in the animated series Creature Commandos. His appearance as Antaan therefore gives him a recurring live-action DCU role, although there is no indication that Bulldozer and Antaan are connected or related within the story.
Adaptations built around morally complicated, world-weary characters continue to draw attention elsewhere too, including the upcoming Neuromancer series heading to Apple TV.
What Episode 2 Reveals About Lanterns
Lanterns stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, with Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King serving as the series creators. Mundy is also the showrunner.
The eight-episode series forms part of the DCU’s first chapter, Gods and Monsters, and centres on a mystery in Rushville, Nebraska. The story moves between 2016 and 2026, with earlier events also contributing to the wider mystery.
Rather than delivering a straightforward cosmic superhero adventure, Lanterns combines an investigative mystery with extraterrestrial elements. Hal and John are attempting to uncover the truth behind their case while the show gradually expands the wider DCU mythology.
Episode 2, “Trust Fall,” was directed by James Hawes, who also directed the pilot and first two episodes. Vanessa Baden Kelly and Chris Mundy are credited as the episode’s writers.
The episode is scheduled to premiere Sunday, August 23, at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on HBO and HBO Max in the United States. The promotional stills featuring Ben-Victor were released around August 22, one day before the episode’s premiere.
The images confirm Antaan’s appearance, but they do not reveal whether he is a villain, an antagonist with understandable motivations, an uneasy ally or something considerably more complicated.
Final seasons and series conclusions have also been drawing attention this year, including Outer Banks Season 5 on Netflix, which brought the Pogues together for one last run.
Lanterns Starts Strong as Antaan Enters the Story
The arrival of Antaan comes after an impressive opening for Lanterns. The premiere, “Pilot,” recorded 9.3 million views during its first three days across HBO and HBO Max, including approximately 6.6 million viewers in the United States.
That reportedly made it the biggest premiere for a DC Studios series on HBO Max to date. “Pilot” also ranked among HBO Max’s top five premieres overall and reportedly outperformed comparable early-viewing figures for IT: Welcome to Derry, The Penguin and True Detective: Night Country.
That momentum now carries into Episode 2, where the introduction of Antaan could add another major layer to the central mystery.

For now, Antaan should be treated strictly as Antaan. The Atrocitus theory is fascinating, especially because of the similarities in motivation, loss and hatred of authority, but there is no official evidence that the characters are the same.
That could change as Lanterns continues to reveal pieces of its mystery. With multiple timelines, Green Lantern mythology and a growing cast of extraterrestrial characters now entering the story, Antaan may prove to be far more important than these first promotional images suggest.
Momentum for returning favorites has been strong across streaming this year as well, as seen with Ted Lasso Season 4’s return to Richmond.
