Red Dead Redemption 2’s ‘Mafia 1899’ Mod Turns Saint Denis Into a Crime Empire With Heists, Assassinations and More

Red Dead Redemption 2 just found a wild new way to keep players busy, and this time, Arthur Morgan can trade the cowboy life for something much closer to a Mafia boss. A free fan-made PC mod called “Mafia 1899” transforms parts of Rockstar Games’ 1899 world into an organized-crime playground packed with Mafia-inspired missions, heists, assassinations, protection rackets, illegal deals, rescues and plenty of opportunities to make Saint Denis your criminal headquarters.

Created by Nexus Mods user M8Tmods and uploaded around August 18–19, 2026, Mafia 1899 takes obvious inspiration from 2K’s Mafia franchise, especially Mafia 1: Definitive Edition. The mod does not replace Red Dead Redemption 2’s main campaign. Instead, it layers a completely new criminal role-playing experience onto the existing game world, giving players a fresh reason to return to Saint Denis.

Even better, the content works during both Arthur Morgan’s and John Marston’s portions of the game. That means players are not restricted to one protagonist or one specific point in the story to experience the Mafia-inspired activities. For anyone who has already spent hundreds of hours exploring Rockstar’s Wild West, this mod basically says: forget the quiet life for a moment. Saint Denis has a crime empire to run.

Speaking of Rockstar, the studio’s next big release has been generating just as much buzz recently through an entirely different channel. Check our story on GTA 6 CyberLeek Leaks Continue as Take-Two Hunts for the Mystery Leaker (Updated) for the latest on that ongoing situation.

‘Mafia 1899’ Turns Saint Denis Into a Full-Blown Criminal Playground

Red Dead Redemption 2 has not received new official single-player content from Rockstar Games in recent years, leaving PC modders to create many of the fresh experiences that keep the game feeling alive. Mafia 1899 is one of the more ambitious examples because it does much more than add a few random encounters.

The mod makes Saint Denis the center of its organized-crime gameplay and adds a dedicated Mafia bar where players can step into a more role-playing-focused environment. The location includes an interactable drinking area, a bedroom and an interactive meeting table featuring voice commands and NPC setups designed specifically for role-playing.

Then there is the don’s office, which acts as a major launch point for the mod’s missions. Players can even remove the don through the mod’s .ini file and take the chair for themselves, adding another layer of customization to the experience.

Mafia 1899 also gives players plenty of control over how their criminal organization looks. The don’s model can be changed, along with ally and enemy models and weapons. VIP target models and weapons can also be customized.

The additional world features include a Saint Denis wagon and horse fence, wagon summon points and an interactable hotel featuring a bedroom. Together, these additions make the mod feel less like a collection of disconnected missions and more like a criminal sandbox built inside Red Dead Redemption 2.

And the mission lineup is where things get seriously interesting.

Mafia 1899 offers a substantial selection of criminal activities that can be started from marked locations or mission-giver icons. GamingBible described the mod as appearing to contain “a whopping 13 mission types,” while the detailed descriptions on the Nexus Mods page reveal multiple variants and locations across several categories.

If tactical squad-based strategy is more your thing than open-world crime, check our story on Star Wars Zero Company’s Mystery Character: Who Could Be the Fourth Exotic Specialization? for the latest speculation surrounding that upcoming title.

The activities include:

  • Protection racketing: Intimidate store owners into paying protection money. Refusing to cooperate can lead to players shooting, aiming at the store owner or tackling them.
  • Wagon robbery: Steal wagons belonging to a rival Mafia organization. This mission is explicitly inspired by an early mission from Mafia 1.
  • Personal guard duty: Protect the don during a meeting.
  • General assassination: Eliminate a heavily guarded VIP after they leave a Saint Denis department store. Players must deal with security before taking the shot from a sniping position.
  • Intimidate the prostitute: A recreation of the Mafia 1: Definitive Edition mission “The Saint and The Sinner.”
  • VIP defense: Protect an important target from attackers.
  • Associate rescues: Rescue associates from several different locations, including under the bridge, a Bayou hideout, the slums, a Saint Denis saloon, the docks and a warehouse.
  • House calls: Visit and intimidate an informant. Players can permanently silence the informant for a reduced payout.
  • Rival Mafia VIP assassinations: Eliminate rival Mafia VIPs at locations such as the east house, cemetery, post office, factory, docks and water fountain. Different approaches are available, including sniping, going in loudly or impersonating a wagon driver.
  • Deals: Exchange payment for illicit booze at locations including the docks, slums, behind the gunsmith, gazebo, Bayou and cemetery. Haggling can turn the deal into a brawl.
  • Bribes: Deliver hush money to targets across Saint Denis, including the police chief. Making more deliveries increases the payout while also increasing the danger of rival Mafia attacks.
  • Heists: Take on larger criminal operations with their own objectives and different approaches.

Multiplayer shooters have also been going through their own wave of significant changes lately. Check our story on Modern Warfare 4 Beta Update Shakes Up Multiplayer With Cachette, Inflation and TTK Changes for a breakdown of what’s different in the latest build.

There is also a bar attack mission, giving players another way to bring chaos to Saint Denis.

The Mafia connection goes deeper than simply borrowing the idea of organized crime. Several missions are direct nods to Mafia 1: Definitive Edition. Both the wagon robbery and intimidate the prostitute missions draw directly from similar quests in the Mafia series, while the latter recreates “The Saint and The Sinner.” That explains the deliberately unsavoury mission title.

For players who want something bigger than individual jobs, the mod also brings several dedicated heists into the mix.

The Police Files Heist sends players into a police station to find incriminating files connected to their Mafia while also stealing valuables.

The Booze Wagon Heist takes inspiration from Mafia 1’s “A Trip to the Country.” Players travel to a farmhouse outside Saint Denis, steal a wagon loaded with booze and deliver it to the docks. An optional bribe can make the entry quieter.

Then there is the Church of Holy Heist, which revolves around smuggling or seizing goods from the catacombs of a church controlled by a rival Mafia.

The Warehouse Heist targets illicit cargo inside the Castille Cotton Company warehouse, another location controlled by a rival Mafia. Players can attempt a silent rooftop entry by using a bribe, or they can abandon stealth and go in guns blazing.

These larger operations give Mafia 1899 a stronger sense of structure than a simple collection of random activities. They also make smart use of Red Dead Redemption 2’s existing Saint Denis environment rather than trying to completely rebuild the game.

And the mod does not force players to stick with Arthur Morgan.

Mafia 1899 works during both Arthur and John’s sections of Red Dead Redemption 2. Players therefore have access to the Mafia-inspired activities across both protagonist portions of the campaign rather than being locked to one character or a particular story stage.

Not every gaming story this year has been about new content, either — some players have been making a very different kind of statement. Check our story on PlayStation Blackout Begins as Fans Unplug Consoles in Week-Long Protest Against Sony’s Digital-Only Future for that ongoing story.

The mod is designed to provide hours of additional gameplay, with Saint Denis serving as the primary base for its criminal operations. Players can collect protection money, arrange illicit deals, bribe officials, rescue associates, eliminate rival VIPs and carry out elaborate heists.

That variety appears to be one reason the Red Dead Redemption 2 community reacted so positively despite the mod being only a few days old when GamingBible covered it on August 23.

One player summed up their reaction by writing:

“This is the coolest mod ever, what a great idea,”

Another fan said:

“This is a truly great one! More than I could’ve asked for or expected.”

A third player revealed that the idea had been living in their head for years:

“Dude. I remember about three years ago thinking how cool a mafia mod would be. Now my dreams are complete.”

The assassination missions have received particular praise, with some players already asking whether the concept could eventually become its own dedicated mode.

Mafia 1899 has also appeared among trending content on Nexus Mods and has been highlighted by gaming outlets as another example of the PC modding community finding creative ways to keep Red Dead Redemption 2 feeling fresh years after its original release.

For players ready to jump in, the mod is free and requires ScriptHookRDR2. Installation involves placing the provided .asi and .ini files into the Red Dead Redemption 2 game folder.

M8Tmods has credited community members including 1Vex16 and krissy for code contributions involving NPC voice lines and help messages. The creator has also provided a Ko-Fi link for players who want to offer support, along with a development video and a modding Discord.

Because Mafia 1899 is a third-party modification, players should back up their game files and check the mod’s requirements and compatibility before installing it.

The timing of Mafia 1899 is also worth noting. Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to generate speculation about a possible next-generation update, but Rockstar has not released new official single-player content for the game in recent years. That has made the PC modding community increasingly important for players looking for substantial new ways to experience the game.

Mafia 1899 does not attempt to replace Red Dead Redemption 2’s story or turn the entire game into something completely different. Instead, it adds an organized-crime role-playing layer to the existing experience.

And honestly, that is what makes the concept so fun. Red Dead Redemption 2 already gives players an enormous open world, memorable characters and a huge amount of freedom. Mafia 1899 takes that foundation and asks players to use it from a completely different criminal perspective.

One moment, you are riding through the Wild West. The next, you are collecting protection money, arranging illicit booze deals, bribing officials, rescuing associates, eliminating rival VIPs and planning a robbery in Saint Denis.

For anyone who has already explored Rockstar’s world hundreds of times, Mafia 1899 offers a fresh excuse to saddle up again.
