Moonvale Episode 3: What Is Unknown Warning Us About?

⚠️ SPOILER ALERT: This article contains major story spoilers for Moonvale Episode 3. Come back once you have completed the episode.

Unknown’s appearance in Episode 3 is brief but hard to shake off. He contacts MC right in the middle of Charlie and Ash’s investigation of Room 31, drops a warning, and then goes quiet for the rest of the episode. Here is a full breakdown of what he said, what it likely means, and what his timing suggests.

What Did Unknown Say in Episode 3?

Unknown messages MC while Ash and Charlie are investigating Adam’s motel room. The full conversation based on the choices I took, as seen in the screenshots, goes as follows:

What Is Unknown Actually Warning Us About?

Unknown’s warning has two clear parts. The first is directed at MC’s involvement in the situation. The second is most likely about Adam specifically and what he is hiding. Since it is Adam who is missing, let us assume (for now) the second warning is about Adam.

On MC’s involvement, Unknown tells MC directly that they do not understand what they have gotten into, that it is already too late to help “him”, and that continuing will lead to a point of no return. He frames this as advice rather than a threat, but the tone makes it clear he wants MC out of Red Log Pines.

On Adam, Unknown says Adam kept the truth from MC deliberately, knowing MC would walk away if they knew what he actually did. He does not say what Adam did. He only confirms that something happened and that Adam made a calculated decision to hide it.

However, another important question remains:

Is Unknown Confused About MC’s Identity?

Throughout Episodes 1 and 2, Unknown has contacted MC right when Eric was around Whitmore in the forest. This could possibly mean either:

  • Unknown couldn’t see Eric properly since it was dark and mistook him for MC
  • Unknown thinks Eric is MC

The second possibility doesn’t make much sense since Unknown seems to know a lot about Red Log Pines and even Adam’s past. In this scenario, not knowing Eric doesn’t make any sense.

Was Unknown the Stranger in Room 31?

This is one of the bigger questions Episode 3 leaves open, and the timing makes it worth looking at seriously.

Ash spots someone inside the room. She runs away initially but returns. The stranger in Adam’s room opens the door and waits. After waiting for Charlie for a while, Ash enters the room alone but to her surprise, no one is inside anymore. The window is shut, and no other possible way out of the room, unless Ash missed seeing the stranger leave the room while she was texting. Charlie reaches the room by now and starts looking around with Ash. Unknown contacts MC almost immediately after this moment.

Key observations:

  • Unknown has only messaged MC when he appears to be physically active or present somewhere. His messages in earlier episodes align with moments where he seems to be nearby rather than watching from a distance
  • Unknown does not appear to know that MC is not currently in Red Log Pines. This was already established in the forest scenes, where he mistook Eric for MC
  • If Unknown went to Room 31 expecting to find MC there, it would follow a pattern of him assuming MC’s location based on incomplete information
  • It is possible that Unknown saw Ash through the peephole and mistook her for MC, which would explain why the stranger held the door open rather than simply leaving

None of this is confirmed. However, the combination of the timing, Unknown’s messaging pattern, and his demonstrated confusion about MC’s identity makes it a reasonable possibility that he was the person in that room.

What Does Unknown Know About Adam?

Based on everything Unknown says in Episode 3, here is what can be pulled from his messages:

What Unknown StatesWhat It Suggests
Adam kept the truth quiet from MCAdam made a conscious choice to withhold something specific
Adam knew MC would turn their back on him if they knewWhatever Adam did is serious enough that he expected it to end MC’s involvement
Unknown says MC can no longer help AdamUnknown believes the situation has already passed the point where MC’s help can make a difference
Unknown calls this “friendly advice”He is not trying to scare MC away out of hostility. He appears to believe he is protecting MC

The tape from Room 31 adds another layer here. Two children in the forest at night, heading to a specific spot, recording it deliberately. Whatever Adam witnessed or did that night appears to be what Unknown is referring to. The Unknown’s warning and the tape both point to the same buried event.

Why Did Unknown Go Silent After This?

Unknown does not contact MC again for the rest of Episode 3. After delivering his warning, he goes offline. This is worth noting because it follows the same pattern as before. He appears, says what he came to say, and disappears.

The silence after the warning makes it harder to dismiss what he said. He was not trying to have a conversation. He delivered specific information, made his position clear, and left. That points to someone who knows exactly what they are doing rather than someone acting impulsively.

Community Theories Worth Considering

The Reddit community has raised several angles that connect to Unknown’s warning:

  • MC may have a direct connection to the past events. Some players believe MC knew Adam and Sophia in childhood, was present for whatever happened in the forest, and then moved away and lost those memories. This would explain why Julie, Sophia, and Unknown all seem to react to MC as though they already know them
  • Unknown may be Billy Blake. If Billy disappeared as a result of something Adam and Sophia did or witnessed, Unknown warning MC away from Adam would make sense. He is not protecting Adam. He is warning MC about him
  • The confusion around MC’s identity is deliberate. Unknown mistook Eric for MC in the forest. Julie appeared to mistake MC as a person she had already met. If MC genuinely has a history in Red Log Pines that they do not remember, that would explain why Adam & Julie seem to already have a fixed idea of who MC is

However, these remain theories. Nothing in Episode 3 confirms them outright as of now. But we will be constantly compiling and analysing new & existing Moonvale theories to get closer to the mystery. Till then!
