A first-person perspective of a pirate character pointing a flintlock pistol at another player on a tropical beach in Windrose.

You just set sail in Windrose , but a question keeps tugging at your pirate coat: can you fight other players? The short answer is no. Windrose is a strictly PvE adventure with no player-versus-player combat whatsoever. This guide explains exactly how multiplayer works, why PvP is absent, and what you can do with your friends instead.

Does Windrose Have PvP?

Windrose does NOT include any form of PvP. You cannot attack, damage, or plunder other players. The game is 100% PvE, meaning every enemy you face is controlled by the AI. All multiplayer content focuses on cooperation rather than competition.

The developers originally planned Windrose as an open-world pirate MMO called Crosswind that included both PvE and PvP. However, the Windrose Crew drastically shifted direction during development. They turned the game into a survival-focused adventure title with a strong narrative, and PvP walked the plank entirely.

According to multiple sources, the studio has no intention of adding PvP during Early Access or even for the full 1.0 launch. While future updates could theoretically change this if community demand grows, there is no current plan or timeline for PvP features.

What Multiplayer Does Windrose Have?

Just because PvP is absent does not mean you sail alone. Windrose offers a robust online co-op mode that lets you team up with friends. Here is what you can expect.

Co-op Features

FeatureDetails
Co-op ModeOnline only – no local or split-screen
Player CountUp to 4 players recommended; dedicated servers support up to 8
ProgressionYour character persists across different worlds
Loot SystemChests give individual rewards (no fighting over loot)
World ResourcesShared – if a friend cuts down a tree, it is gone for everyone
Host DependencyWithout a dedicated server, progress saves to the host’s world

How to Play Co-op in Windrose

You have two ways to start a multiplayer session:

  1. Host a Game – Create an online lobby from your character save. The game generates a session code. Share that code with your friends, and they can join by selecting Connect to Server and entering the code.
  2. Steam Invites – After creating an online world and completing the short tutorial, press Shift + Tab to open your Steam friends list. You can send direct invites without manually sharing a code.

Important note: If you already started a solo offline world, you do not need to restart. Simply select Host a Game for that existing world, share the code, and it instantly converts into a co-op session.

Dedicated Servers: A Game Changer

Unlike many Early Access survival games, Windrose already supports dedicated servers at launch. This feature solves the common problem where only the host can keep the world alive.

With a dedicated server:

  • Your world stays online even when you log off
  • Friends can join anytime to farm resources or build the base
  • You avoid lag and performance dips associated with player-hosted sessions
  • You can support up to 8 players (though 4 remains the performance sweet spot)

Character Progression and Loot Sharing

One of the most player-friendly features in Windrose is persistent character progression. Your character’s equipment, skills, and stats follow you from one world to another. You never start from scratch when joining a friend’s game.

Loot works intelligently too:

  • Chests and containers give individual rewards. Each player opens the same chest and receives their own items. No more fighting over who grabs the gunpowder first.
  • World resources (wood, stone, ore) are shared. If your buddy clears an entire forest, those trees do not respawn quickly.

This system encourages teamwork rather than competition, which fits perfectly with the PvE-only design.

Co-op Gameplay: What You Can Do Together

Windrose lets you experience every activity with friends. Here is how co-op changes the game.

Piloting a ship alone is doable but chaotic. In co-op, each player takes a role: one steers the helm, others man the port and starboard cannons, and someone handles repairs when the hull takes damage. Waves and the day-night cycle affect cannon accuracy, so timing your salvos becomes a team effort.

Land Combat and Bosses

The combat system draws inspiration from Dark Souls but in a more accessible “soulslite” style. You have stamina management, parrying, dodging, and a poise (stagger) system. In co-op, one player can tank hits and draw aggro while others attack from behind. Bosses become much more manageable with a team, and if you die, enemies do not regenerate health – your friend can finish the fight while you respawn.

Base Building and Crafting

Construction works similarly to Valheim. You collect wood, stone, and iron to build bases piece by piece. Bases are shared among all players in the session. You can also recruit NPCs to automate resource harvesting, which frees up time for exploration. In co-op, dividing tasks makes base building twice as fast.

Exploration

Nothing forces your crew to stay together. One player can rush a boss solo while another explores a nearby island. Build Fast Travel Bells on each island you visit – this teleportation system is essential in multiplayer, otherwise you spend half your session sailing to find your friends.

Solo Play: Is Windrose Good Alone?

Absolutely. Windrose is fully playable solo, both online and offline. The survival mechanics, ship combat, crafting, and exploration all function as a complete single-player experience. However, the game’s difficulty is balanced around co-op, so expect tougher boss fights and slower resource gathering when sailing alone.

AspectSoloCo-op (2-4 players)
Boss difficultyPunishing – some fights are wallsMuch more manageable with tank + DPS
NavigationYou manage helm and cannons aloneEach player takes a role
Base buildingTime-consuming aloneTasks divide, twice as fast
ProgressionAt your own paceLinked to host (unless using dedicated server)
ExplorationMethodical, one island at a timeSplit up and cover more ground

Server Types and Performance

Windrose gives you two multiplayer options:

Server TypeHow It WorksBest For
Self-hostedYou host from your own machine; friends join via code or Steam inviteQuick sessions with 1-3 friends
Dedicated serverExternal hosting; world stays online 24/7Persistent crews, larger groups (up to 8 players)

Performance notes: The game recommends 32GB of RAM if you host while playing. Without a dedicated server, you may experience performance dips when loading new world chunks. The developers acknowledge this and plan ongoing optimisation throughout Early Access.

What About Crossplay and Local Co-op?

Crossplay: Currently not supported. Co-op only works between players on the same platform (Steam or Epic Games Store). The developer has not announced crossplay, though it remains a frequently requested feature on the official Discord.

Local co-op / split-screen: No. Each player needs their own PC and their own copy of the game.

Will Windrose Ever Get PvP?

Based on all available information, PvP is not on the roadmap. The developers removed PvP during the transition from Crosswind (an MMO) to Windrose (a survival PvE game). Multiple sources confirm that the studio has no intention of adding PvP during Early Access or for the 1.0 launch.

That said, game development is never set in stone. If community demand becomes overwhelming, the developers could theoretically reconsider. However, do not buy Windrose expecting PvP – you will be disappointed. This is a co-op and solo experience through and through.

Final Verdict: Who Should Play Windrose?

Buy Windrose if you want:

  • A challenging PvE survival game with pirate themes
  • Co-op adventures with up to 4 friends
  • Naval combat, base building, and soulslike melee combat
  • Persistent character progression across multiple worlds

Avoid Windrose if you need:

  • Player-versus-player combat or raiding other crews
  • A Sea of Thieves-style open PvP environment
  • Local split-screen or console versions (PC only for now)

Windrose launched into Early Access on April 14, 2026, on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Grab the 10% launch discount before April 21 if you want to join the crew. Just remember: no fighting each other. Save your gunpowder for Blackbeard.
