How to Recruit Yaya in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Yaya, the warrior monk in Assassin's Creed Shadows, questioning the player's honor during a quest.

Yaya is one of the earliest allies you can recruit through direct choices in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Her path unfolds through a blend of conviction, forgiveness, and emotional tension, and you feel the effect of every decision you make. This guide explores each choice that influences her recruitment, how those moments connect across quests, and what you gain if she joins your League. The goal here is clarity without losing the steady pulse of the story that surrounds her.

How Yaya’s Recruitment Works

Yaya ties her trust to how you treat others during two intertwined quests: Heads Will Roll and The Stray Dogs. The game lets you guide these encounters with simple dialogue choices, yet they carry weight. You only recruit her if you choose at least two forgiveness-aligned answers across three key decisions. You can still make one harsher choice, but two will cost you your chance with her.

Your decisions occur in this order:

1. Heads Will Roll

Choices:
• Justice must be served
• Killing them isn’t justice

If you choose the first, you support Mitsumune’s desire for retribution. Choosing the second supports Yaya’s plea for restraint. Either option unlocks her personal mission later, though your first choice sets the tone for what you must repair.

2. The Stray Dogs – First Dialogue

Choices:
• Forgive him

• Punish him

Here, Yaya watches how you view accountability. Choosing forgiveness nudges her toward trust. Choosing punishment triggers doubt you must recover from in the final choice.

3. The Stray Dogs – Final Dialogue

Choices:
You need to forgive each other
• You need to take responsibility

Your final stance reflects whether you seek reconciliation or consequences. This moment often decides her final judgment if your earlier choices were mixed.

The Forgiveness Threshold

To recruit Yaya, you must choose any two of the following:
• Killing them isn’t justice
• Forgive him
• You need to forgive each other

This creates a simple structure. If at least two of your answers favor peace, Yaya accepts your invitation. Two harsher responses instead create a different result. She steps away, and that thread is cut for the rest of the playthrough.

What Happens If You Reject Her Path

If you land on the wrong side of her expectations, she refuses to join the League when you approach her at the end of The Stray Dogs. She doesn’t return later. Players often discover this too late, which is why Yaya’s choices feel more meaningful than most early-game decisions. In Canon Mode, she joins automatically as you progress, but several players still report missing her due to the mode’s quirks. If you want certainty, follow the decisions listed above.

Yaya’s Abilities When She Joins You

If she accepts your offer, Yaya becomes one of the most forceful combat allies available. Her style centers on raw physical pressure and crowd disruption, and you feel her presence the moment she enters a fight.

Novice Rank – Yaya Rikishi

An active ability that summons her into battle. She pushes enemies back with powerful impact attacks that create space for you to reposition.

Initiate Rank – Yaya Oshitaoshi

A passive effect. When she enters a fight, she knocks down an enemy immediately. This creates a brief opening that helps you seize control before a fight escalates.

Veteran Rank – Inner Strength

Her signature passive ability, unlocked only after upgrading your Dojo to level 3. She delivers a devastating kick that sends opponents flying. This makes her ideal when you want a single ally who tilts the pace of combat strongly in your favor.

You can strengthen her by training at the Dojo, which deepens her passive effects and makes her far more disruptive in close-quarters encounters.
