Some items in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots are easy to replace. Chaff Grenades are absolutely not one of them.

These electronic-disruption tools are among the rarest and most useful pieces of equipment Snake can carry, especially for players trying to slip past dangerous machines without turning every encounter into a full-blown firefight. The biggest problem? You cannot normally buy them from Drebin’s shop during a standard playthrough.

That means every pickup matters.

There are only eight standard map-pickup Chaff Grenades in the entire game, divided across four locations, with two grenades at each pickup point. They are scattered throughout Act 2, Act 3 and Act 4, sending Snake from the South American battlefields to Eastern Europe and eventually back to the legendary Shadow Moses Heliport.

For casual players, they are incredibly useful. For players planning demanding challenge runs, especially a Big Boss Emblem attempt, they can be even more valuable. Missing one of these pickups could leave Snake without one of his best tools for dealing with electronic enemies later in the game.

Here is exactly where to find all eight standard Chaff Grenades in Metal Gear Solid 4.

What Does a Chaff Grenade Do in MGS4?

A Chaff Grenade is a non-lethal support item designed to temporarily disrupt electronic equipment.

In practical terms, throwing one can interfere with machines and their sensors, giving Snake an opportunity to move past electronically controlled enemies without destroying them. They are particularly useful against Gekkos and Scarabs, temporarily disrupting their systems and making dangerous encounters much easier to navigate.

Their usefulness becomes even more important because Drebin does not normally sell Chaff Grenades. During a standard playthrough, the grenades hidden throughout the game’s levels are the primary source available to Snake.

And with only eight standard grenades placed across four locations, this is definitely one collectible you do not want to casually walk past.

1. Act 2 — South America: Confinement Facility

The first Chaff Grenade package appears during Act 2 inside the Confinement Facility.

Once Snake reaches the northern section of the area, look for the larger building located near the small storage building and watchtower. The Chaff Grenades are hidden inside this larger building, specifically in the room containing food.

There are two ways to get inside. You can enter through the normal door within the building or crawl through a hole in the wall from outside.

Location:
Act 2 → South America → Confinement Facility → Northern Area → Larger building → Food room

Reward: 2 Chaff Grenades

This pickup is easy to miss because the Confinement Facility contains several buildings and multiple routes. Players rushing through the area can easily follow the quickest path and leave without checking the northern section properly.

For anyone deliberately collecting non-lethal equipment, spending a little extra time searching here is worth it. The same building also contains another collectible: the Metal Gear 20 Years History: Part 3 iPod track, located in a room containing several cots.

2. Act 2 — South America: Marketplace

The second pair of Chaff Grenades is found later in Act 2, inside the chaotic Marketplace section.

This is the area where Snake has to navigate around Gekkos, and the game is not exactly encouraging players to stop and calmly inspect every stall. That is exactly why this pickup is so easy to overlook.

The grenades are located in the very last market stall on the left before the exit, immediately before the final Gekko guarding the route forward.

Location:
Act 2 → South America → Marketplace → Last stall on the left before the final Gekko

Reward: 2 Chaff Grenades

The safest approach is to make your way to the end of the Marketplace, evade or deal with the final Gekko, and then check the last stall on the left before moving through the exit.

Using a night-vision-equipped Solid Eye can also make the pickup easier to spot when the area becomes chaotic.

The placement is especially useful because the Marketplace itself is one of the sections where MGS4 makes the Gekkos feel genuinely threatening. Chaff Grenades can give Snake a temporary opening to move through the area instead of trying to fight the machines directly.

3. Act 3 — Eastern Europe: Midtown Central Sector

The third Chaff Grenade package is hidden during Act 3 in the Midtown Central Sector of Eastern Europe.

This one is located in the sewer/canal section. After reaching the canal area, look for the ladder leading upward. The Chaff Grenades are tucked away in a corner near the sewer canal.

A more precise description places them between a bench and planters in the relevant part of the canal area.

Location:
Act 3 → Eastern Europe → Midtown Central Sector → Sewer/canal area → Corner near the ladder

Reward: 2 Chaff Grenades

This location can be particularly easy to miss because the Act 3 resistance-member sequence puts a heavy focus on stealth and following the target. When you are busy watching your target and trying not to blow your cover, stopping to inspect every corner of Midtown may not be the first thing on your mind.

Players specifically hunting Chaff Grenades should take the time to explore the sewer/canal area rather than simply following the main route.

One important detail is that this location has occasionally been mislabeled in online guides as being in Midtown N Sector. Collectible guides and walkthrough references place the Chaff Grenades in Midtown Central Sector, specifically within the central sewer/canal area.

4. Act 4 — Shadow Moses: Heliport

The final standard Chaff Grenade pickup takes players back to one of the most recognizable locations in the entire Metal Gear series: the Shadow Moses Heliport.

During Act 4, once Snake reaches the Heliport, head directly onto the helipad itself. The Chaff Grenade pickup is located on the landing area.

Location:
Act 4 → Shadow Moses → Heliport → Helipad

Reward: 2 Chaff Grenades

Unlike some of the earlier locations, the Heliport contains no immediate enemy threat when Snake first arrives. That gives players a rare opportunity to slow down, explore the area and collect the items scattered around this iconic location.

The timing of the pickup is also incredibly useful. Snake is about to enter areas packed with electronic enemies, including the numerous Dwarf Gekkos encountered after leaving the Heliport.

The location also serves as a deliberate callback to the original Metal Gear Solid, where the Shadow Moses Heliport became one of the game’s most iconic locations.

How Many Chaff Grenades Are in MGS4?

The standard game contains eight Chaff Grenades in total, with two grenades available at each of the four pickup locations.

So for players trying to collect every standard Chaff Grenade in Metal Gear Solid 4, these are the four locations that matter.

Can You Get More Than Eight Chaff Grenades?

Yes, but there is an important distinction between the standard map pickups and an additional repeat-playthrough method.

After completing the game once, there is a separate method involving Johnny/Akiba. According to trophy and collectible references, Chaff Grenades can additionally be obtained from Akiba during the Advent Palace sequence on a subsequent playthrough.

This should be treated separately from the normal collectible placements.

The four standard map locations listed above remain the primary collectible pickups during a standard playthrough, totaling eight grenades. The Akiba method is an additional way to acquire Chaff Grenades on a repeat playthrough.

This distinction matters because some online discussions can make the total number of Chaff Grenades in MGS4 appear inconsistent. The commonly documented standard total is eight grenades, with two per package, while the Johnny/Akiba method is an additional repeat-playthrough acquisition.

Why Chaff Grenades Are So Important in Metal Gear Solid 4

Chaff Grenades become increasingly valuable during the later parts of Metal Gear Solid 4 because electronic enemies can be difficult to bypass using conventional stealth alone.

The grenades can temporarily disrupt Gekko and Scarab systems, giving Snake a window to move through areas that would otherwise be heavily guarded by machines.

They are also particularly valuable during attempts to earn the Big Boss Emblem, one of the most demanding achievements in the game.

That challenge requires Snake to complete The Boss Extreme difficulty while meeting strict restrictions. Players must avoid kills, alerts and continues, avoid the use of certain recovery or special items, and complete the game within the required time.

Under those conditions, every useful non-lethal tool becomes important.

Because Chaff Grenades are scarce and cannot simply be purchased from Drebin during the challenge, experienced players are encouraged to carefully plan their inventory and collect useful non-lethal equipment during their preparation playthrough.

In other words, these little grenades can go from being a convenient stealth tool to something you genuinely wish you had saved when the game starts throwing more electronic threats at you.

Best Chaff Grenade Locations to Remember

For players who just want the fastest possible checklist, here are the four locations to memorize:

Act 2 — Confinement Facility
Inside the larger building in the northern section, in the room containing food.
2 grenades

Act 2 — Marketplace
The last market stall on the left immediately before the final Gekko and exit.
2 grenades

Act 3 — Midtown Central Sector
Inside the sewer/canal area, tucked into a corner near the ladder.
2 grenades

Act 4 — Shadow Moses Heliport
Located directly on the helipad.
2 grenades

Standard Total: 8 Chaff Grenades

For players attempting a no-kill run or preparing for a Big Boss attempt, collecting all eight can provide a significant advantage later in the game, particularly when electronic enemies start making traditional stealth routes much more difficult.

Final Takeaway

The Chaff Grenade might look like a small support item, but its limited availability makes it one of the pieces of equipment worth actively hunting down in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

The game provides only four standard pickup opportunities, with two grenades at each location, for a total of eight standard Chaff Grenades.

The key places to remember are the Confinement Facility and Marketplace in Act 2, the Midtown Central Sector in Act 3, and the Shadow Moses Heliport in Act 4.

For anyone preparing for a difficult run, especially a no-kill challenge or a Big Boss Emblem attempt, do not simply sprint through these areas and hope your inventory works itself out later. Missing one of these packages can leave Snake without one of his most useful electronic-disruption tools when the later acts become increasingly demanding.
