Is Kingdom Hearts 4 Coming to Switch 2? Yes, and Here Is Everything We Know

Nobody saw this coming at a Nintendo Direct. Kingdom Hearts 4 made a surprise appearance at the June 9, 2026 Nintendo Direct, and Square Enix wasted no time confirming that Kingdom Hearts 4 is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 at launch, alongside every other major platform. After four years of near silence, Sora is finally back in the spotlight, and Switch 2 owners get a front-row seat from day one.

Is Kingdom Hearts 4 Coming to Nintendo Switch 2?

Yes. Kingdom Hearts 4 is confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2 and will launch simultaneously across all platforms. Square Enix confirmed this directly during the June 9, 2026 Nintendo Direct, with the official statement reading:

“Kingdom Hearts 4 will be available at launch on Nintendo Switch 2.”

This marks a significant shift for the series, which previously released Kingdom Hearts titles on Switch only as cloud versions that required a constant internet connection to play. The Switch 2 release will be a native version, meaning no internet connection is needed to access the game.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Release Date on Switch 2

Square Enix has not confirmed a release date for Kingdom Hearts 4 on any platform. No release window has been provided either. However, the game is confirmed as a simultaneous day-one launch, so whenever it releases on PS5 or PC, the Switch 2 version arrives at exactly the same time.

More details are expected in the coming months.

All Confirmed Platforms

Kingdom Hearts 4 will launch on the following platforms simultaneously:

PlatformStatus
Nintendo Switch 2Confirmed, day one at launch
PlayStation 5Confirmed
Xbox Series X and SConfirmed
PC via Epic Games StoreConfirmed
PC via SteamConfirmed

Square Enix confirmed the full platform list in a separate post following the Nintendo Direct reveal.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Price

Square Enix has not announced a price for Kingdom Hearts 4 yet. Pricing details will surface closer to an official launch date announcement.

What Was Shown at the Nintendo Direct

The Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer shown at the June 2026 Nintendo Direct picked up directly from the 2022 reveal, with Sora in Quadratum, the realistic city modelled after Shibuya. Key moments from the trailer include:

  • A hooded female figure in Organisation 13 robes narrating from a rooftop, explaining that Quadratum existed without Light and Darkness until outsiders brought those concepts with them
  • Sora using a chain-like Keyblade ability to leap between cars and buildings during combat with a giant Darkside Heartless
  • Brief appearances from new and returning characters, including a moment where Young Xehanort shields Sora from rain with an umbrella
  • Active combat sequences set during both day and night, featuring new enemy types
  • A sequence where Sora opens a portal with his Keyblade to summon a swarm of golden Keyblades used as a weapon
  • A final shot of Sora deflecting a direct blow from the Darkside to protect two civilians

The art style has shifted noticeably toward realism, moving away from the series’ traditional stylised look. Graphics appeared significantly more polished compared to the 2022 footage.

What Square Enix Officially Said

The official description released alongside the trailer reads:

“A new installment in the action role-playing series developed and published by Square Enix, Kingdom Hearts 4 gives fans a look at some of the characters that protagonist Sora will meet in the mysterious city of Quadratum. Sora will once again journey to realms, where new figures cross his path and new powers awaken his next chapter. Kingdom Hearts 4 will be available at launch on Nintendo Switch 2.”

Why Kingdom Hearts 4 Is Coming to Switch 2

Square Enix confirmed a fully multiplatform strategy in 2024, moving away from platform exclusivity deals. The company’s previous approach of making titles like Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PlayStation timed exclusives drew criticism, and Square Enix publicly stated it would adopt day-and-date multiplatform releases going forward. Kingdom Hearts 4 is one of the first major titles to reflect that change.

The decision to debut the new Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer at a Nintendo Direct rather than at PlayStation’s showcase further underlines this shift in approach.

The Kingdom Hearts Collection: Play the Full Series on Switch 2 First

Before Kingdom Hearts 4 arrives, Switch 2 owners can play the entire series natively for the first time through three collections, all releasing on October 8, 2026:

CollectionContents

Kingdom Hearts 3 + Re MindKingdom Hearts 3 and Re Mind DLC

A bundle containing all three collections will also be available on October 8, 2026. Each collection is available to purchase separately as well.

These are native Switch 2 versions, not cloud editions. Players who previously purchased the cloud versions on Nintendo Switch can carry over their save data to the new Switch 2 releases. Additionally, owners of the cloud versions receive a 50% discount on the native Switch 2 editions.

A free demo for Kingdom Hearts 3 is already available on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop now.

Previous Kingdom Hearts on Nintendo Switch

The original Kingdom Hearts titles appeared on Nintendo Switch as cloud-only editions, meaning players needed a stable internet connection at all times to play them. This was a significant limitation given the Switch’s identity as a portable console. The Switch 2 native versions resolve this entirely, bringing the full series to handheld for the first time without any connectivity requirement.

Key Takeaways

  • Switch 2 version: Confirmed, native, day-one launch alongside all other platforms
  • Release date: No date or window confirmed
  • Collections: All three arrive on Switch 2 on October 8, 2026, with a 50% discount for cloud version owners
  • Save data: Cloud version save files transfer to the native Switch 2 editions
  • Free demo: Kingdom Hearts 3 demo available now on Switch 2 eShop
  • Next update: More details on Kingdom Hearts 4 expected later in 2026

Square Enix still has a great deal to show, and with the Kingdom Hearts 25th anniversary arriving in 2027, the next major reveal could come sooner than fans expect.
