What Was Shown at Summer Game Fest 2026
ArenaNet revealed Guild Wars 3 with a world premiere trailer during Summer Game Fest 2026, marking the studio’s first new game announcement in almost two decades. The reveal trailer opens with a player character known as a Vaelwarden riding a wolf-like mount and scaling cliffs on foot, showcasing the game’s emphasis on traversal and movement. The trailer also offers a look at the open world of Orr, with new magical elements including Vael spirits and a companion called the Seeker. The footage is confirmed to feature in-engine gameplay.
Studio head Colin Johanson stated directly during the reveal that the team’s approach with Guild Wars 3 is to push MMORPGs forward and create an online world that feels believable, rewarding, and innovative while also respecting players’ time.
Setting and Story
Guild Wars 3 takes place over a thousand years before the events of the original Guild Wars, in the Tyrian region of Orr. The world is described as a vast wilderness frontier filled with magic, nature spirits, and competing guilds fighting over how to protect or exploit the land beyond civilisation’s borders.
Players take on the role of a Vaelwarden, a member of a guild of adventurers dedicated to protecting both the spirits of the wild and the people of Orr. Nature entities called Vael spirits embody the vitality of the landscape and vary in size and influence across the world’s ecosystems. The most notable of these is the Seeker, a mount unique to each player that acts as a connection to the spirits of Orr and carries them across the open world.
Gameplay and Features
ArenaNet has confirmed several core gameplay pillars for Guild Wars 3, all tied around movement, combat, and customisation.
| Feature | Details |
| Combat System | Blends action RPG combat with Guild Wars build-making, rewarding positioning, skill use, and movement |
| Movement | Players glide, leap, sprint, slide, and ride mounts, with momentum carrying over between movement modes |
| Controller Support | Designed from the ground up to feel great on both gamepad and keyboard and mouse |
| Character Customisation | Deep customisation and skill-building in line with Guild Wars franchise traditions |
| Party Play | The trailer teased party play for groups of four |
| Seeker Mount | Every player has a unique Seeker that serves as both a mount and a spiritual connection to Orr |
The studio placed a strong emphasis on the phrase “joy of movement” throughout the reveal, with ArenaNet studio head Colin Johanson confirming that the combat system will usher in an entirely new type of MMO experience.
What Happens to Guild Wars 2?
One of the biggest questions following the Guild Wars 3 announcement is what it means for Guild Wars 2, which has been running since August 2012 and has received six expansions: Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire, End of Dragons, Secrets of the Obscure, Janthir Wilds, and Visions of Eternity.
ArenaNet addressed this directly in their official statement. The studio confirmed it is actively developing all three games simultaneously: Guild Wars 3, Guild Wars 2, and Guild Wars Reforged. A studio update video followed on June 6, featuring Studio Head Colin Johanson, Guild Wars 2 Game Director Josh Davis, and Guild Wars Reforged Game Director Stephen Clarke-Willson, with a further livestream scheduled for June 9.
ArenaNet’s message to the community was clear: Guild Wars 2 is not going anywhere.
How Is Guild Wars 3 Different From Its Predecessors?
Guild Wars 3 represents several firsts for the franchise alongside its gameplay evolution.
- It is the first Guild Wars game to release on console, arriving on PlayStation 5 alongside PC
- It is built on Unreal Engine 5, moving away from ArenaNet’s previous proprietary engine
- It is set further back in Tyrian history than any previous entry, taking place over a thousand years before the original Guild Wars
- It will not require a monthly subscription, continuing the buy-to-play model the series is known for
- It introduces new world-building elements including Vael spirits and the Seeker mount system, which have no direct equivalent in previous Guild Wars titles
ArenaNet has promised further details on the game throughout the rest of 2026 and into 2027, ahead of the beta beginning in Fall 2027.
