What Is Stranger Than Heaven?
Stranger Than Heaven is a prequel to RGG Studio’s long-running Yakuza/Like a Dragon series. The game traces the origin story of the Tojo Clan and follows protagonist Makoto Daito, an American-born entertainer with an American father and a Japanese mother, alongside his lifelong friend Yu Shinjo, as the two rise through Japan’s criminal underworld and entertainment scene across five distinct time periods. The story eventually connects to the fictional Kamurocho, the setting at the heart of the wider Yakuza franchise.
Unlike the recent Like a Dragon titles, Stranger Than Heaven does not use turn-based combat. Instead, it features a dynamic, fluid system where players control both of Makoto’s arms independently, blocking incoming attacks with one arm while countering with the other using the left and right triggers. Players can also use the environment and weapons in combat.
Stranger Than Heaven Cast
The Summer Game Fest trailer revealed a large cast of real-world celebrities and actors appearing in the game.
| Character/Role | Cast Member |
| Orpheus (smuggler) | Snoop Dogg |
| Snoop Dogg’s son | Cordell Broadus |
| Amaru | Tupac Shakur |
| Additional cast | Yu Shirota, Dean Fujioka, Moeka Hoshi, Tokuma Nishioka, Tori Kelly, Satoshi Fujihara, Akio Otsuka, Ado |
| Deceased actor (Yakuza film icon) | Bunta Sugawara |
Snoop Dogg’s character Orpheus is described as a “cutthroat and charismatic” smuggler who eventually recognises Makoto’s musical talents and partners with him. Snoop Dogg also appeared on stage at Summer Game Fest alongside his son to discuss the game, and separately announced that he is working on Death Row Games, with plans to share more details in the future.
The Tupac Situation: What We Know
The most talked-about element of the reveal is the inclusion of Tupac Shakur, who died in 1996 at age 25, thirty years before this announcement. His character is named Amaru in the game.
RGG Studio and Sega addressed the inclusion directly in their official press release. The key confirmed details are:
- Tupac’s inclusion has the permission and ongoing supervision of his estate, Amaru Entertainment
- His character design is based entirely on archival footage and photographs
- No AI was used in any aspect of his portrayal
- RGG Studio stated it is treating the integration with “the utmost respect for his legacy”
- Further details about the scope of his role in the game will be shared at a later date
This is not the first time Tupac’s likeness has appeared in entertainment after his death. In 2012, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre used a Tupac hologram during their performance at Coachella. However, the gaming community’s reaction to his inclusion in Stranger Than Heaven has been mixed, with some players welcoming it and others finding the decision controversial.
Tupac is also the second deceased person confirmed for the game. Bunta Sugawara, a celebrated Japanese actor known for his roles in yakuza films that directly inspired the franchise, is also in the cast.
What Else Did Stranger Than Heaven Reveal?
Beyond the cast announcement, the Summer Game Fest trailer also provided more context around the game’s music-driven story. The narrative places a strong emphasis on the entertainment industry alongside the criminal underworld, and the game incorporates show management elements that require players to organise various performances as part of Makoto’s rise to prominence.
RGG Studio Head Masayoshi Yokoyama appeared on stage following the trailer to confirm the release date alongside Snoop Dogg and his son.
Stranger Than Heaven releases on January 15, 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Xbox Game Pass subscribers can access the game on day one at no additional cost.
