What the Gameplay Trailer Showed

The Summer Game Fest 2026 gameplay trailer for Star Wars Zero Company offered the first real look at how the turn-based combat system works in practice. The footage confirms the game draws clear inspiration from the XCOM franchise, with tactical squad positioning, turn-based encounters, and mission-based structure all on display. Bit Reactor’s team includes developers who previously worked on XCOM and Civilisation, and the influence shows clearly in how the combat plays out.

The trailer also ended with the reveal of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker, whose path briefly crosses with the Zero Company crew during a mission. His role in the full story has not been explained yet, but his presence confirms that recognisable faces from the Clone Wars era will appear alongside the original cast of characters.

Star Wars Zero Company Story and Setting

Star Wars Zero Company takes place during the twilight of the Clone Wars and follows Hawks, a former Republic officer who assembles a covert squad of specialists to track down Kundri Fathom, the leader of a Separatist-aligned cult who poses a threat to the entire galaxy. The story is entirely original and takes place in the shadows of the Clone Wars rather than on its front lines, offering a perspective on this era that has not been explored in previous Star Wars games.

Hawks is a fully voiced and customisable protagonist, and the overall tone leans toward a gritty, grounded portrayal of the war rather than a heroic Jedi power fantasy.

Your Squad: Who Joins Zero Company?

The trailer confirmed several key squad members and the overall structure of how you build your team. Your core allies include:

  • A disillusioned clone trooper voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, the legendary voice actor who has voiced clone troopers across Star Wars animation for years
  • A Mandalorian warrior from the ancient Clan Verminoth
  • A Tognath Jedi Padawan
  • A rotating roster of recruits from across the galaxy known as Operators

Operators form the broader pool of soldiers you recruit, train, and deploy on missions. The game carries a permadeath system, meaning squad members you lose on the battlefield are gone permanently, which raises the stakes on every tactical decision you make.

Customisation and Base Management

Customisation sits at the centre of the Star Wars Zero Company experience. Hawks and all Operators can be built from eight Star Wars species: Devaronian, Human, Neimoidian, Ovissian, Togruta, Twi’lek, Weequay, and Zabrak. Beyond species selection, you can customise voices, attire, combat specialisations, and individual talents for each character.

Between missions, you manage your squad from The Den, your base of operations. Inside The Den, you recruit new Operators, upgrade facilities, purchase equipment, and track missions across an ever-changing galaxy map. Developing bonds between squad members on the battlefield unlocks new support abilities and cross-training benefits that improve individual Operator stats over time.

What the Developers Said

Greg Foertsch, CEO and Creative Director at Bit Reactor, confirmed the team has worked directly with Lucasfilm Games to build an authentic Clone Wars story featuring new characters, robust customisation, a new ship, Separatist droids, and more.

Douglas Reilly, VP and GM of Lucasfilm Games, described Star Wars Zero Company as a fresh experience for the franchise, pairing cinematic storytelling with tactical gameplay from a perspective that has not been explored before while remaining true to what fans know about this era.
