What Was Revealed at Summer Game Fest 2026
Square Enix debuted two separate videos at Summer Game Fest 2026: a cinematic reveal trailer running approximately two minutes and twenty-three seconds, followed by a separate five-minute extended gameplay trailer. Director Naoki Hamaguchi and Matt Mercer, the English voice of Vincent Valentine, presented the announcement live at the showcase.
The reveal trailer opened with a recap of the original game’s story, framing it as the foundation for everything that follows, before transitioning into new footage of Cloud and the party aboard the Highwind airship over a planet approaching destruction. The extended gameplay trailer went deeper into new locations, playable characters, and the debut of the FITS system.
Final Fantasy VII Story: Where Does Revelation Pick Up?
Final Fantasy VII Revelation picks up directly from the events of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Cloud Strife and his companions face a world on the brink of annihilation. Grieving a beloved ally and with Sephiroth approaching godhood, the party takes to the skies aboard the iconic Highwind airship in a race against time to stop Meteor, the ultimate destructive magic, and prevent the complete destruction of the planet.
Square Enix confirmed the central theme of Revelation is resolve. Each character confronts their own convictions and personal journey as they move toward the final battle that will decide the planet’s fate.
New and Returning Playable Characters
Final Fantasy VII Revelation confirms a fully assembled playable party for the first time across the trilogy.
| Character | Role / Combat Style |
| Cloud Strife | Returning protagonist |
| Tifa Lockhart | Returning party member |
| Barret Wallace | Returning party member |
| Red XIII | Returning party member |
| Yuffie Kisaragi | Returning party member |
| Cait Sith | Returning party member |
| Vincent Valentine | Newly playable: lightning-fast gunplay and bestial transformation Limit Breaks |
| Cid Highwind | Newly playable: lance-based combat with single-target strikes and area-of-effect damage |
Vincent and Cid join the playable roster properly for the first time in the trilogy. Vincent’s Limit Break transformations and Cid’s lance combat were both shown in the extended gameplay trailer.
It is also worth noting that Sephiroth’s voice actor has changed for Revelation. Director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that Tyler Hoechlin was unable to return. Travis Willingham takes over the role.
World and New Locations
The entire planet serves as the open world stage for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, accessible via the Highwind airship. Players can fly freely across the map and skydive from the airship at any point, transitioning seamlessly from air travel to ground exploration via parachute.
New and returning locations confirmed so far include:
- Mideel Archipelago (new sun-drenched island region)
- The Nation of Wutai (the warrior nation)
- The Northern Continent (frozen wastes)
- Outskirts of Midgar (returning area)
Players can also choose who to help and in what order as the planet fights for survival, adding more exploratory freedom than the previous two entries.
The FITS System: New Combat Mechanic Explained
The most significant new gameplay addition in Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the FITS system. This mechanic lets players equip unique outfits for each character that unlock entirely new combat movesets and abilities, drawing inspiration from classic Final Fantasy job classes.
| Job Class | Effect |
| Warrior | Enhances offensive capabilities, enabling aggressive and powerful physical playstyles |
| Black Mage | Specialises in offensive magic and spell-focused combat |
| Summoner | Teased in trailer footage |
| White Mage | Teased in trailer footage |
The system works alongside the existing hybrid battle system from the first two games, which you can switch between real-time action and Tactical Mode at any time. Square Enix confirmed the combat system has been expanded and refined further for Revelation.
The Weapons Are Here
Long-awaited by fans of the series, the Weapons finally make a confirmed appearance in Revelation. These are colossal monstrous guardians awakened by the planet itself to defend against Meteor. Square Enix confirmed they are indiscriminate in their destruction, meaning Cloud and the party must face them as enemies alongside Sephiroth’s forces.
