What Was Shown at Summer Game Fest 2026

Capcom revealed Resident Evil Veronica through a world premiere trailer that opened Summer Game Fest 2026. The footage runs approximately 3.5 minutes and features a cinematic sequence set inside a Parisian apartment building. The trailer follows an unnamed female character through the corridors of the apartment before revealing her as Claire Redfield, ending with a title drop. A final shot of the iconic Gold Lugers closes out the reveal, rendered in impressive detail through the RE Engine.

The trailer plays coy with the reveal but makes clear this is a reimagined take on the original Code Veronica story, with modernised gameplay and updated visuals confirmed in the game’s official description.

What Is Resident Evil Code: Veronica?

Resident Evil Code: Veronica originally launched in 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast, making it the first mainline Resident Evil game to release on a non-PlayStation platform. The story follows Claire Redfield and her brother Chris Redfield as they fight to survive a T-virus outbreak across two locations: a remote prison island in the Southern Ocean and a research facility in Antarctica. Fan-favourite villain Wesker also plays a key role in the story.

The game sits in the Resident Evil timeline roughly around the same period as Resident Evil 3, and its events are considered important context for fully understanding Resident Evil 5. Notably, Code Veronica was also the last full survival horror entry in the series before Resident Evil 4 shifted the franchise toward action-oriented gameplay.

Despite never carrying a numbered title, the game is widely considered a core mainline entry by fans and critics alike. Many casual players skipped it due to the incorrect assumption that it was a spin-off, which makes the remake a significant opportunity for a new generation to experience the story.

An updated version titled Code Veronica X later released on PS2 in 2001 and GameCube in 2003, followed by ports to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2011.

Where Resident Evil Veronica Fits in the Remake Series

Resident Evil Veronica will become the fifth Resident Evil remake when it releases. Capcom has built a strong track record with this format over the past decade, and each entry has been well-received commercially and critically.

GameOriginal ReleaseRemake Year
Resident Evil19962002 (GameCube)
Resident Evil 219982019
Resident Evil 319992020
Resident Evil 420052023
Resident Evil Veronica20002027 (confirmed)

The Resident Evil 4 Remake is particularly relevant context here. It became the fastest game in the franchise’s history to reach ten million sales after launch and earned widespread critical praise. Resident Evil Veronica follows that momentum directly, with Capcom’s description confirming it will feature modernised gameplay, a reimagined storyline, and detailed new visuals while preserving the essence of the original.

Additionally, IGN previously verified that a Resident Evil Zero remake is also in development at Capcom, though that project carries a further-off timeline, reportedly targeting a 2028 release window.

What Capcom Has Confirmed About the Game

Capcom’s official description for Resident Evil Veronica states the following directly:

  • It preserves the essence of the original Resident Evil Code: Veronica
  • It introduces modernised gameplay
  • It features a reimagined storyline
  • It includes vividly detailed graphics
  • The game’s tagline describes 2027 as the year “madness and intrigue, love and hate all combine to create a chilling new entry in survival horror”

No further gameplay details, pricing, or a specific release date have been confirmed at this stage. Capcom has indicated more information will follow, and given the 2027 window, a fuller reveal later in 2026 is likely.
