What Is Final Fantasy Resonance?
Final Fantasy Resonance is a brand new HD-2D turn-based RPG developed and published by Square Enix. It is the first Final Fantasy game to use the HD-2D visual style made famous by the Octopath Traveler series. Square Enix describes the game as asking: “What if Final Fantasy had continued to evolve while remaining pixel art?” The result is a visually striking adventure that combines nostalgic pixel art with dynamic camera work and pixelised 3D models in cutscenes.
The game is a single-player experience and is not a port, remake, or remaster. However, it does adapt the first-season storyline of the now-shuttered mobile game Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, which ran from 2015 until its global closure in October 2025. Square Enix describes the console version as something that “extensively rebuilds and reimagines” that content, delivering an experience “far richer in both quality and scope than a straightforward port or remake.” The game also incorporates elements from other Brave Exvius updates alongside unique new story content.
Final Fantasy Resonance Story and Setting
Final Fantasy Resonance follows Rain, a highly regarded knight in the kingdom of Grandshelt, where his father serves as king. Rain sets out on a classic-style adventure to protect the world’s magic crystals from a threatening force, accompanied by a group of companions:
- Lasswell, Rain’s loyal right-hand man
- Lid, a talented engineer following in Cid’s footsteps
- Fina, a summoner who has lost her memory
The journey takes players across multiple continents via an overworld, with optional dungeons to explore. Players can unlock Espers for Fina to summon in battle and discover Visions at shrines that include cinematic callbacks to the wider Final Fantasy universe. Square Enix confirms the game features “a story revolving around crystals depicted in high-definition pixel art.”
Final Fantasy Resonance Gameplay: What Has Been Confirmed
Final Fantasy Resonance returns to the classic turn-based structure the series built its reputation on. Specifically, it uses a traditional turn order system, not the ATB system found in older Final Fantasy titles. Key confirmed gameplay elements include:
- Strategic turn-based battles where players exploit enemy weaknesses to trigger stagger effects, seizing extra turns and building toward powerful Resonance attacks
- A new overworld with travel by Chocobo and airship
- Voiced characters and cinematic cutscenes in addition to the HD-2D presentation
- Visions, a collectible character system where classic Final Fantasy heroes attach to party members like a job system, granting extra abilities and levelling up through use
- A Colosseum with deadly monsters and rewards
- The Chamber of Arms featuring formidable foes sealed within legendary weapons
- A showdown with Ultima Weapon
- The wandering swordmaster Gilgamesh appears as optional content
Confirmed Visions: Guest Characters from Across Final Fantasy
A central feature of Final Fantasy Resonance is the Visions system, which lets players collect and equip iconic characters from the broader franchise. The following Visions are confirmed so far:
| Vision | Origin Game |
| Warrior of Light | Final Fantasy I |
| Terra | Final Fantasy VI |
| Cloud | Final Fantasy VII |
| Zidane | Final Fantasy IX |
| Shantotto | Final Fantasy XI |
| Y’shtola | Final Fantasy XIV |
Additional Visions unique to Final Fantasy Resonance itself are also confirmed, though details on those have not been released yet.
Final Fantasy Resonance Music
The Final Fantasy Resonance soundtrack is composed and arranged by Elements Garden, led by Noriyasu Agematsu. The game includes 33 newly recorded tracks created specifically for Resonance, alongside music carried over from Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius.
Final Fantasy Resonance vs. Brave Exvius: What Is the Difference?
This is a common point of confusion, so here is a clear breakdown:
| Aspect | Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius | Final Fantasy Resonance |
| Platform | Mobile (now shut down) | Switch, Switch 2, PS5, Xbox, PC |
| Business model | Free-to-play gacha | Premium single-player game |
| Combat system | Mobile gacha battles | Traditional turn-based system |
| Story | Full gacha seasonal story | First season adapted and expanded |
| Status | Global servers closed October 2025 | Releasing October 22, 2026 |
Square Enix specifically states this is not a port or remake. The Brave Exvius story and characters serve as the foundation, but the gameplay, world structure, combat system, and additional content have all been rebuilt for a full console experience.
