Kadokawa has officially confirmed that The Rising of the Shield Hero will return for a fifth season. The announcement came alongside a new teaser video and visual, though a release date has not yet been revealed.
The news follows the conclusion of Season 4, which aired its 12th and final episode this week in Japan. The anime continues to be streamed globally via Crunchyroll, which also provides English dubbed episodes.
In addition to the anime announcement, Kadokawa unveiled its first The Rising of the Shield Hero global game project, set to release on PC and smartphones. Details on the title’s gameplay and release window remain under wraps, but an early promotional visual has been shared.

Production and Staff
Season 4 was directed by Hitoshi Haga (Made in Abyss assistant director) at Kinema Citrus, with scripts overseen by Keigo Koyanagi. Character designs were handled by Franziska van Wulfen, Sana Komatsu, and Masahiro Suwa, while Kevin Penkin (Tower of God) returned to compose the music.
The anime introduced new cast members including Takeo Ōtsuka as Werner and Jirō Saitō as Jaralis.
Franchise Background
Based on the light novel series by Aneko Yusagi with illustrations by Seira Minami, The Rising of the Shield Hero first premiered in 2019 with a 25-episode season. It was followed by Season 2 in 2022, Season 3 in 2023, and Season 4 in 2025.
The story follows Naofumi Iwatani, an ordinary otaku who is transported into a parallel world as one of four legendary heroes. Armed only with a shield, he must rise from betrayal and hardship to protect humanity against the Waves of Catastrophe.
Expanding Beyond Anime
This isn’t the franchise’s first foray into gaming. In 2019, Kadokawa released The Rising of The Shield Hero: Relive The Animation on PC via Steam, while Jupiter launched a puzzle game for the Nintendo Switch in 2024. The newly announced global game project marks the series’ largest interactive expansion to date.
Looking Ahead
While the release date for The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 5 remains unconfirmed, anticipation is high among fans worldwide. With both a new season in production and a global game underway, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down.
