The top hat may need to stay on the shelf a little longer. Level-5 announced during Tokyo Game Show 2025 that Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, the next chapter in the acclaimed puzzle-adventure series, has been delayed to 2026. What softens the blow for fans, however, is confirmation that the title will also arrive on Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 alongside the current Switch.

New Glimpses at Tokyo Game Show

The new trailer showcased at the event offered glimpses of a bustling Steam Bison, an American city brimming with advanced steam-powered technology, where the story is set. While originally slated for 2025, Level-5 explained that the extra time will allow the team to refine the game’s puzzles and polish its presentation, assuring players that the delay is in service of delivering “the best possible experience.”

Story Continues After Unwound Future

The narrative picks up after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future. Luke Triton, having moved to America for family reasons, has reinvented himself as “Detective Luke,” solving everyday mysteries in his new home. A particularly perplexing case soon compels him to summon his mentor, Professor Hershel Layton, setting the stage for a reunion that fans have long awaited. Actor Yō Ōizumi reprises his role as Layton, while Mio Imada lends her voice to the older, wiser Luke.

Puzzles with a New Signature

Puzzles—always the heart of the franchise—will carry a new signature this time. With the passing of longtime series puzzle designer Akira Tago, Level-5 has turned to QuizKnock, a Japanese group specializing in riddles and brainteasers, to craft the game’s challenges. Their involvement promises a blend of fresh creativity and continuity with the series’ legacy.

A Nostalgic Return for the Franchise

For many, the announcement carries a note of nostalgia. The Professor Layton series, which debuted in 2007 and has sold over 18 million copies across the globe, has been largely dormant since 2014’s Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy. While 2017’s Layton’s Mystery Journey introduced Layton’s daughter Katrielle as the new lead, it never quite replaced the anticipation for Hershel Layton’s return.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Now, with The New World of Steam confirmed for a dual release on both the Switch and Switch 2, the franchise finds itself stepping into new technological territory while revisiting its roots. The delay may test the patience of its audience, but it also suggests a commitment to delivering an adventure worthy of the Layton name.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is scheduled for a global release in 2026, available digitally on the Nintendo eShop and at retail.
