Terraria hides some of its most interesting weapons behind very specific moments. The Killing Deck belongs to that category. It does not drop from enemies, appear in chests, or unlock through crafting. Instead, it waits for the right time, the right NPC, and the right world state.
Once you understand those conditions, getting it becomes straightforward.
What is the Killing Deck?
The Killing Deck is a Hardmode magic weapon introduced in Terraria 1.4.5.0. It fires fast-moving projectiles and favors rapid use over raw damage, making it feel quick and precise in combat.
The weapon directly references Dead Cells, both in concept and presentation. Its tooltip, “A Dead Man’s Hand for your opponents, mon chéri,” reinforces that crossover identity while also nodding to Gambit from Marvel Comics, a character known for weaponized playing cards.
The Exact Requirement to Obtain the Killing Deck
You can only get the Killing Deck from the Wizard NPC.
Two conditions must be met at the same time:
- Your world must be in Hardmode
- A Blood Moon must be active
When both conditions align, the Wizard adds the Killing Deck to his shop inventory. You can then purchase it directly.
The price is 19 gold.
If the Blood Moon ends, the item disappears from the shop. You must wait for another Blood Moon to try again.

Where the Wizard Fits Into the Process
The Wizard already serves as a magic-focused vendor, so the Killing Deck fits naturally into his inventory. You do not need to complete extra dialogue, trigger events, or meet hidden requirements beyond having him present and alive.
As long as he exists in your world during a Blood Moon in Hardmode, the option appears automatically.
Weapon Stats and Playstyle Overview
The Killing Deck deals 22 magic damage per hit and uses 8 mana. It has a very fast use time of 20, which defines how the weapon feels more than its raw numbers.
It offers average knockback at 5, a 4 percent critical strike chance, and projectile velocity of 12. The weapon supports autofire, letting you maintain constant pressure in combat.
Its rarity sits at Light Red, rarity level 4. You can sell it for 4 gold, and research requires one copy. The best modifier for the weapon is Mythical.
