Sony just made PlayStation Plus more expensive, and the change is coming fast. Starting May 20, 2026, new subscribers in select regions will pay higher rates for PlayStation Plus Essential, the entry-level tier of the service. If you are already subscribed, you have a narrow window to act before the new pricing catches up with you.
When Does the PS Plus Price Increase Take Effect?
The new pricing kicks in on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. Sony announced the change on May 18, 2026 via the official PlayStation account on X, giving subscribers just two days’ notice before the higher rates go live.
What Are the New PS Plus Prices?
Sony has confirmed new pricing for the PS Plus Essential tier only. The annual subscription remains unchanged for now. Here is a full breakdown:
| Plan | Old Price | New Price |
| 1-Month Essential (USD) | $9.99 | $10.99 |
| 1-Month Essential (EUR) | €8.99 | €9.99 |
| 1-Month Essential (GBP) | £6.99 | £7.99 |
| 3-Month Essential (USD) | $24.99 | $27.99 |
| 3-Month Essential (EUR) | €24.99 | €27.99 |
| 3-Month Essential (GBP) | £19.99 | £21.99 |
| 12-Month Essential | Unchanged | Not affected |
The monthly plan rises by $1 in the US and £1 in the UK. The three-month plan takes a sharper hit, jumping by $3 in the US and £2 in the UK.
Sony has not confirmed whether PS Plus Extra or PS Plus Premium pricing will also change, though GameRant has noted it is likely that those tiers will follow at some point.
Who Does the Price Increase Affect?
This is where it gets important. Sony’s official statement confirmed the following:
“This price change does not apply to current subscribers (except in Turkey and India) unless the existing subscription changes or lapses.”
Key points to know:
- New subscribers in affected regions pay the higher rate from May 20 onwards
- Existing subscribers keep their current rate as long as their plan stays active
- Turkey and India subscribers face the new pricing regardless of their current subscription status
- Any subscriber who lets their plan lapse, cancels, or switches tiers will automatically move to the new higher rate when rejoining
So if you are currently subscribed, do not let it lapse. If you are thinking about subscribing or renewing, locking in a 12-month plan at the current rate before May 20 is your best move to avoid paying more for at least another year.
What Does PS Plus Essential Actually Include?
PS Plus Essential is the base tier of PlayStation Plus and the one affected by this price change. It gives subscribers:
- Online multiplayer access for PS4 and PS5 games, including titles like Fortnite and Helldivers 2
- Monthly free games to download and keep as long as the subscription stays active
- Exclusive PlayStation Store discounts
May 2026’s free games for PS Plus Essential include EA Sports FC 26, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, and Nine Sols. The higher tiers, PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium, add access to a rotating game catalogue and classic game streaming respectively, and both include May additions such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Star Wars Outlaws.
Why Is Sony Raising Prices?
Sony’s official explanation is brief: “ongoing market conditions.” The company used near-identical language in March 2026 when it announced steep PS5 hardware price increases, attributing those to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”
However, several factors point to what is actually driving the decision:
- Rising memory costs caused by AI-sector demand driving up RAM prices globally
- Flat revenue growth in Sony’s Games and Network Services division, which recorded net sales of approximately $29.9 billion in the most recent financial year, up just 0.3% year-on-year
- A forecast 6% drop in Sony’s Games and Network Services revenue for the coming financial year
- A $765 million impairment loss on Bungie related to Destiny 2 underperformance and delays to Marathon
- Sony’s own CFO Lin Tao previously stated the company intended to increase network service pricing to “minimise the impact” on profitability while offsetting hardware costs
Sony’s strategy of keeping hardware prices lower and making up margins through subscriptions appears to be stretching both sides simultaneously, as hardware has also seen two separate PS5 price hikes in the past year.
How Does This Compare to Xbox Game Pass?
The timing is notable. Sony’s PS Plus price increase lands roughly a month after Xbox lowered the price of Game Pass. An Xbox Game Pass Ultimate monthly subscription now costs $22.99, reduced from $29.99. Xbox also announced a cheaper Game Pass Starter Edition in partnership with Discord earlier in May 2026.
The contrast has not gone unnoticed by fans, with many pointing out the opposing directions both services are moving in at the same time.
What Have Sony’s Recent Price Increases Looked Like?
This PS Plus hike is not an isolated event. Sony has raised prices across multiple parts of its business over the past 12 months:
- August 2025: PS5 hardware price increase in the US
- March 2026: Global price increases for PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal
- PS5: Increased to $649.99 (up from $549.99)
- PS5 Digital Edition: Increased to $599.99 (up from $499.99)
- PS5 Pro: Increased to $899.99 (up from $749.99)
- PlayStation Portal: Increased to $249.99 (up from $199.99)
- 2025: PS Plus price increases across Latin America, Southeast Asia, Australia, Canada, and South Korea
- May 20, 2026: PS Plus Essential increase for new subscribers in the US, EU, and UK
The last comparable global PS Plus subscription hike was in August 2023, when Sony raised 12-month subscription prices by approximately 35% across all tiers.
How Are Players Reacting?
Fan reaction has been loud and largely negative. Several responses on X directed frustration at Sony’s “market conditions” justification:
One fan wrote: “Blaming market conditions is insane. It should be free to play online games without paywalls in 2026.”
Another posted: “It seems like a joke to me that PlayStation Plus is going up in price because of market conditions. How the hell does RAM affect you wanting to charge me more to play online? It’s a f*ing joke.”**
A third added: “Online gaming should be completely free. There is no market condition that should result in what is a free service on PC consistently increasing in price just because you’re on console.”
Many players are also drawing direct comparisons to Xbox’s simultaneous price cuts, with the contrast fuelling further frustration.
