Some Terraria weapons impress through spectacle. Others stand out through quiet absurdity backed by raw power. The True Copper Shortsword belongs firmly in the second category. On the surface, it looks like the most humble blade in the game. In practice, it matches the strongest weapon Terraria has to offer.
Getting it requires no crafting tree, no NPC, and no grinding beyond what you already completed to reach the endgame. The entire process revolves around one deliberate action and a single location.

What the True Copper Shortsword Actually Is
The True Copper Shortsword exists as a variant of the Zenith. It does not introduce new mechanics or altered behavior. Instead, it replaces every sword in the Zenith’s animation with the Copper Shortsword.
Despite the visual joke, its performance tells a different story.
The weapon carries the same stats as the Zenith, which places it at the very top of Terraria’s power scale. That makes it effectively a reskin rather than a downgrade or sidegrade.
Because of this shared stat line, the True Copper Shortsword ties with the Zenith as the strongest weapon in the game.
Weapon Stats at a Glance
The True Copper Shortsword deals 190 melee damage and delivers strong knockback rated at 6.5. It carries a 14 percent critical strike chance and an average use time of 30. The weapon fires projectiles at a velocity of 16, matching the Zenith’s behavior exactly.
It holds Red rarity, sits at rarity level 10, and sells for 20 gold. Research requires one copy.
Everything about its performance mirrors the Zenith, right down to how it feels in combat.
The Only Way to Get the True Copper Shortsword
You obtain the True Copper Shortsword through Shimmer transmutation.

To do this, you must already own a Zenith. Take your Zenith and throw it directly into Shimmer.

The transformation happens instantly. The Zenith disappears, and the True Copper Shortsword takes its place.
Can You Get the Zenith Back
Yes. If you throw the True Copper Shortsword back into Shimmer, the game returns all the swords used to craft the Zenith. This includes the full set of components, not a partially restored version.
This means you can safely experiment without permanently losing your progress. You can even recraft the Zenith afterward if you choose.
