Creature Enamel is one of those Subnautica 2 resources that sounds like you should be hunting wildlife to obtain it, but it actually works quite differently. If you have just reached the Alien Ruins and spotted the Enameled Glass recipe on the Fabricator, this guide covers exactly where to find Creature Enamel, how to mine it, and what you need it for.
What Is Creature Enamel in Subnautica 2?
Despite the name, Creature Enamel has nothing to do with harvesting creatures. It is a mineable mineral resource described in-game as a hard ceramic coating that forms a dense, impermeable surface layer. Visually, you will recognise it immediately once you know what to look for: three white prongs jutting out of a tar-black rock formation. Once you have seen it once, it is impossible to confuse with anything else on the seafloor.
You mine it using the Sonic Resonator. Because of the unusual geometry of the deposit, the first shot can sometimes miss. If that happens, reposition slightly and aim at the darker mineral base rather than the white prongs themselves.
Where to Find Creature Enamel in Subnautica 2
There are two confirmed locations worth knowing, depending on how much Creature Enamel you need at the time.
| Location | Distance | Depth | Best For |
| Near the Alien Ruins | 200 metres southeast of the Alien Ruins | Moderate | Early crafting, quick runs |
| Plateau Biome, Alien Tower | 1,400 metres east of the Lifepod | Up to 300 metres | Bulk farming |
Location 1: Near the Alien Ruins (Recommended First Stop)
The most accessible Creature Enamel farming spot sits roughly 200 metres southeast of the Alien Ruins signal. You will find a large rock formation with multiple Enamel Deposits clustered across it. This is the spot to head to when you first need Creature Enamel for Enameled Glass, as the depth is more forgiving and the journey is shorter.
However, be aware that the area is patrolled by Needler Mangos, which will spit spikes at you if you get too close. Move carefully between nodes, stay low, and work quickly. Bringing Distraction Flares is a smart move here, as they draw the Needler Mangos away long enough for you to mine in peace. Each deposit drops around two pieces of Creature Enamel on average, so a few successful nodes give you a usable amount fast.
Location 2: Plateau Biome near the Alien Tower (Bulk Farming)
For a larger stockpile, the better route takes you 1,400 metres east of the Lifepod into the Plateau Biome, near the Alien Tower. Here you will find a concentration of Enamel Nodes sitting on large stone pillars. The catch is depth: these nodes can sit as deep as 300 metres, which puts them well beyond comfortable free-swimming range.
Bringing a Tadpole is strongly recommended for this run. The submersible covers the distance faster and removes the oxygen risk on the descent entirely. Without a Tadpole, attempting this route at 300 metres depth is genuinely risky, so build the vehicle first if you have not already.
What Is Creature Enamel Used For?
Creature Enamel feeds into one direct crafting recipe, but that recipe matters a great deal for your progression.
| Crafting Station | Ingredients | Output |
| Fabricator | 1x Glass + 2x Creature Enamel | Enameled Glass |
Enameled Glass is the material that unlocks a range of downstream crafting recipes, covering vehicles, Tadpole upgrades, and tool modifications. Most importantly, it is a required ingredient for the Tadpole depth upgrade, which allows your submersible to dive beyond its default 250-metre limit. Without that upgrade, large sections of the map remain inaccessible, so Creature Enamel is effectively a progression bottleneck.
For initial Enameled Glass crafting, you only need two pieces of Creature Enamel total. However, since Enameled Glass feeds into multiple recipes further down the line, building a proper stockpile early saves you repeated trips back to the farming locations.
Quick Farming Tips
- Head to the Alien Ruins area first if you just need a small amount for your initial Enameled Glass crafts. It is faster and shallower.
- Use the 1,400-metre east route with a Tadpole when you want a bulk supply without repeated trips.
- Aim the Sonic Resonator at the dark rock base of the deposit rather than the white prongs to land consistent hits.
- Creature Enamel stacks efficiently in your inventory, so it will not eat through your carrying capacity during a farming run.
- The Needler Mangos near the Alien Ruins are persistent but manageable. Staying low and moving between nodes quickly reduces the time you spend under fire.
