A fast-moving wildfire south of Pleasanton, California, forced residents to flee their homes after rapidly expanding to more than 1,000 acres, while also leaving a firefighter injured during the emergency response. The blaze, now known as the Little Fire, prompted evacuation orders across parts of Alameda County as hundreds of firefighters, aircraft and heavy equipment battled difficult terrain and changing conditions.
According to ABC7 Bay Area, the wildfire ignited shortly before 3 p.m. on Tuesday near Little Valley Road and Hubbard Lane, south of Pleasanton. By 10 p.m., CAL FIRE reported that the fire had burned 1,007 acres and reached 10% containment.

Little Fire near Pleasanton grows rapidly as evacuation orders expand
The wildfire spread quickly through grassland, leading officials to issue evacuation orders affecting the Ruby Hill neighborhood and communities along Vineyard Avenue. Authorities also opened an evacuation centre at the Pleasanton Senior Center, located at 5353 Sunol Boulevard, where city staff assisted displaced residents.
CAL FIRE confirmed that one firefighter was injured during firefighting operations. Officials did not immediately release details about the firefighter’s condition.
Fire crews from the Alameda County Fire Department and Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department joined CAL FIRE personnel in battling the blaze.

Aircraft, helicopters and ground crews face major challenges
As daylight remained, CAL FIRE focused on slowing the fire’s advance using aerial resources.
In an interview with ABC7 Eyewitness News, CAL FIRE Battalion Chief Raul Medina said the immediate priority was to slow the fire by making full use of available aircraft before nightfall.
Officials said crews faced two major challenges throughout the operation: limited access to the head of the fire and wind conditions that complicated suppression efforts.
At the height of the response, firefighters deployed three air tankers, three helicopters, dozers, and hand crews to attack the fire from both the air and the ground.
Later, CAL FIRE spokesperson Marcus Hernandez confirmed that an engine rollover had occurred during operations.
“Unfortunately we did have a CAL FIRE engine rollover, one firefighter injury, was transported to a local hospital and is in good spirits,” Hernandez said.

Residents describe a terrifying evacuation as flames raced across hillsides
For many residents, the wildfire transformed an ordinary afternoon into an emergency within minutes.
Pleasanton resident Sue Fox recalled watching smoke rapidly approach her neighbourhood.
“I saw the smoke coming down the hill. Quite a lot of billows of smoke coming toward our street and our house,” she said.
Resident David Underwood admitted feeling uneasy after evacuating.
“I’m not really nervous. I’m a little anxious,” he said.
After receiving an emergency phone alert, Julie Deane quickly gathered essential belongings before helping both her 84-year-old mother and an elderly neighbour evacuate.
“I get scared later. I panic later. I get everything taken care of that I need to do no matter what it is, and then I look back at it and go ohhh wow,” Deane explained.
Outside the evacuation centre, Pleasanton Mayor Jack Balch said he wanted to personally support affected residents, noting that his own home sits just outside the evacuation zone.

Witnesses watched flames race across hillsides as investigators examine cause
Nearby resident Justin Mclean described the dramatic fire behaviour.
“The whole hillside was on fire and smoking like mad,” he said.
He added that flames occasionally climbed trees, shooting 20 to 30 feet into the air.
During the response, CAL FIRE deployed three helicopters dropping water and five airtankers releasing fire retardant while bulldozers and hand crews worked steep ridges.
The cause of the wildfire remains under investigation. Witnesses reported that construction activity was taking place along Little Valley Road, an area investigators were examining.
Officials also credited the defensible space around homes in the upscale Ruby Hill community for preventing structural losses. According to CAL FIRE, no structures had burned, with one section of the fire coming within approximately 30 feet of backyards before crews stopped its advance.
CAL FIRE is expected to continue fighting the Little Fire through the night as evacuation orders remain in place and containment efforts continue, according to ABC7 Bay Area.
