What Does the Hall Pass Do in Blue Prince?

A wide perspective of a grand, white-pillared hallway with busts and glowing lantern lights in the game Blue Prince.

The Hall Pass is one of those items in Blue Prince that looks simple until you sit with it for a while. You pick it up, carry it along, and only later realize how much friction it removes from the way you travel and expand your estate. If you like to build wide or revisit earlier branches, this small slip of paper ends up doing more work than you expect.

This guide explains exactly what the Hall Pass changes, where you can find it, and why it becomes a steady advantage throughout a run.

How the Hall Pass Changes Movement

Once the Hall Pass is in your inventory, every move between two adjoining hallways becomes free. No Steps are taken from you for crossing from one hallway to the next.

When the estate is small, the effect may feel minor. As your map stretches outward, you start to feel the freedom of walking loops, checking old branches, and adjusting your path without watching your Step count drop with each correction. You can wander between connected hallways without planning around penalties.

How It Affects Drafting New Hallways

The second effect supports a very different part of your strategy. When you stand inside a hallway and draft another hallway from it, the usual Gem cost disappears. Any hallway that would have required Gems now becomes free to add.

This helps you expand more boldly. If your estate grows in multiple directions or if you enjoy creating wide, interconnected layouts, the Hall Pass gives you the freedom to do so without draining your resources room by room.

Both effects work on their own, yet together they shift the pace and shape of your estate in a noticeable way.

Where You Can Find the Hall Pass

You can run into the Hall Pass in a few different places, though academic rooms tend to hide it most reliably. Possible sources include:

  • Classroom
  • Dormitory
  • Lost and Found floorplan
  • Guest Bedroom drafted from the Cloister of Mila, which guarantees a Hall Pass if none has appeared yet
  • Trading Post, depending on the trade offered
  • Random item effects through:
    • The Satellite Dish’s experimental “gain 1 random item” result
    • The Spiral of Stars before its showroom behavior takes over

Because so many systems can produce it, you often encounter one naturally during normal exploration.

How the Hall Pass Supports Your Run

The Hall Pass becomes most helpful when your estate stretches into long chains of hallways or when you revisit earlier branches often. Free movement keeps your Step count steady, and free hallway drafting allows you to build new paths without pausing to calculate Gem use.

If your run involves scouting side paths, circling back to old puzzle rooms, or reshaping sections of your estate mid-run, you will feel the Hall Pass smoothing out those decisions. It keeps your options open and helps you respond to unexpected changes without burning through resources.
