Where to Find This Is Not a Painting
The starting point sits on a hill below Yurutown in the Miguel District, near the road southwest of Yurutown. You can locate it through the Anomagram on your World Map, which gives you a rough position for every Anomaly Commission in Hethereau. Once you reach the area, explore the hill and you will spot the strange canvas and puppet without too much trouble.
To begin the commission, approach the puppet or figurine next to the canvas or easel on the hill. This triggers the first puzzle and kicks off the sequence.
How to Complete This Is Not a Painting
The entire commission revolves around adjusting your camera angle and position to align paintings with real-world elements around you. When you land the correct angle, the painting flickers and a door appears. There are three main puzzle areas in total, each one building on the last.
Tip: Use free camera movement and zoom for finer adjustments. Small shifts in position make a bigger difference here than large movements.
Puzzle 1: Align the Painting with the Door Frame
- After approaching the puppet, you will see an empty square frame with space for two doors.
- Stand on the left side of the easel and tilt your camera downward so it faces upward.
- Adjust your position gradually until the double doors on the painting line up inside the empty frame.
- The painting will flicker once the alignment is correct and a door will appear for you to walk through.
Puzzle 2: Align the Chipped Door and Connect the Painted Door
- Go through the door from Puzzle 1 to enter the next area.
- You will find a painting showing a single door and a window overlooking the moon.
- Stand behind the chair near the painting and shift your camera angle to connect the painted door with the real door behind the easel.
- The goal is to merge the two into a double door. When the alignment clicks into place, the painting flickers and the door unlocks.
Puzzle 3: Fix the Light Source, Then Align the Miniature Door
This is the trickiest section of the commission and involves two alignment steps within the same area.
Step 1: Align the Light Source
- Your character will note that it is too dark and suggests finding a light source.
- Turn toward the large black statue and approach the easel next to it.
- You will see a floating light with no visible support.
- Stand in front of the easel and tilt your camera downward while aligning the edge of the painting with the end of the red curtain. The aim is to attach the floating light to the tripod stand behind it.
- Take your time here. Small camera adjustments work better than large movements.
Step 2: Align the Miniature Door
- Once the light is in place, return to the small desk with a tiny door, which is now visible thanks to the light from the previous step.
- Stand to the right of the desk and play with your camera angle until the tiny door connects with the painted door behind it.
- Once the alignment is correct, a door appears. Exit through it to complete the commission.
This Is Not a Painting Rewards
Completing this commission earns you the following one-time rewards:
| Reward | Amount |
| Hunter EXP | 160 |
| Annulith | 20 |
| Fons | 8,000 |
| U-00NE | 15 |
| Beetle Coins | 4,000 |
| Anomaly Material Selection Box I | 3 |
These rewards are one-time only, but they are worth grabbing early since Annulith and Anomaly Materials feed directly into character progression throughout the game.
Quick Tips Before You Start
- Approach the puppet next to the canvas to trigger the commission. It will not start automatically just by standing nearby.
- Camera control is the entire skill set here. Each puzzle requires fine adjustments, so slow and steady wins.
- The third area is the hardest. Focus on the edge of the painting aligning with the red curtain before worrying about the light source position.
- There is no combat involved, so you can attempt this commission at any Hunter Level without needing a prepared team.
- Use free camera movement and zoom for precision when the standard angle is not quite landing.
- Anomalies scale to your level, so coming back to this one later does not change the challenge.
This Is Not a Painting stands out in the NTE Anomaly Commission lineup precisely because it does something completely different. If you enjoy this style of environmental puzzle, the full Anomaly Commission list across Hethereau has plenty more variety worth hunting down.
