Most nights in Grow a Garden 2 pass without much drama. You defend your crops, maybe attempt a steal or two, and wait for the day cycle to kick back in. Then the moon turns red, and everything changes. The Blood Moon is the rarest and most rewarding night event in the entire game, and knowing exactly what to do the moment it triggers can be the difference between a forgettable session and one that earns you more Sheckles than an hour of normal farming. Here is everything you need to know.

What Is the Blood Moon in Grow a Garden 2?

The Blood Moon is a night-only weather event in Grow a Garden 2 that gives crops a chance to receive the Bloodlit mutation, one of the highest-value mutations currently in the game. When it triggers, the moon turns red, a different theme plays across the server, and laser beams begin striking gardens randomly. Any crops hit by those beams can receive the Bloodlit mutation, which applies a x60 multiplier to their selling price.

DurationLasts the entire Night phase, ends when Day begins

How Rare Is the Blood Moon in Grow a Garden 2?

The Blood Moon has only a 2% chance of spawning during any given Night phase, making it the rarest moon event in Grow a Garden 2. To put that in context, each Night phase also has a 13% chance of producing a Gold Moon, a 6% chance of a Rainbow Moon, and a 79% chance of a completely normal night with no moon event at all. This means you can play through many sessions without ever seeing a Blood Moon, which is exactly why preparation matters so much when one does appear.

Night phase moon spawn rates:

Moon TypeSpawn ChanceEffect
Normal Night79%PvP active, no special event
Gold Moon13%Gold Seeds spawn; chance to become Midas
Rainbow Moon6%Rainbow Seeds spawn; chance to become Star-Powered
Blood Moon2%Bloodlit mutation chance on random crops

What Does the Bloodlit Mutation Do?

The Bloodlit mutation applies a x60 multiplier to the selling price of any crop it lands on. This makes it one of the most valuable mutations you can get in Grow a Garden 2, sitting above Electric (x25), Rainbow (x40), and Starstruck (x50) in terms of raw value. However, the standard mutation rule still applies: each crop can only carry one mutation at a time. So if a crop already has a lower-value mutation when the Blood Moon fires, the Bloodlit mutation may not apply to it at all.

This is the most important thing to understand about the Blood Moon. A garden full of already-mutated crops is a wasted opportunity. Clearing out lower-value mutations before Night begins gives the Blood Moon the maximum number of clean targets to work with.

All Grow a Garden 2 mutations ranked by multiplier for context:

Bloodlitx60Blood Moon event (night only)
Starstruckx50Starfall weather event
Rainbowx40Rainbow event, Rainbow Seeds, or Unicorn pet
Electricx25Lightning Storm weather event

How to Prepare for the Blood Moon in Grow a Garden 2

Because the Blood Moon only has a 2% spawn chance per night, there is no way to predict exactly when it will appear. However, preparing your garden every single night as if a Blood Moon is possible costs you nothing and puts you in the best position when one does eventually fire.

Before Night begins:

  • Harvest any crops carrying lower-value mutations. The single-mutation rule means a Frozen or Electric crop cannot also become Bloodlit. Clearing these out gives the Blood Moon fresh targets to land on.
  • Fill every empty garden plot with high-value crops. More ripe crops in the ground means more chances for laser beams to strike something valuable. An empty garden during a Blood Moon is a missed opportunity with no recovery.
  • Activate sprinklers across your plots. Sprinklers push crops toward maturity faster, giving you more ripe plants in the ground when the event triggers.
  • Equip a defensive pet. Because Blood Moon fires during the Night phase when PvP is fully active, every other player in the server will know your garden could contain high-value Bloodlit crops the moment the event starts. A Bee or other defensive pet significantly reduces the risk of losing your most valuable mutated crops to a thief.

During the Blood Moon:

  • Do not harvest. Crops in your inventory cannot receive the Bloodlit mutation. Leave everything in the ground and let the laser beams do their work while the event runs.
  • Stay in your garden. This is not the time to go raiding other players. Your own plots are where the value is during a Blood Moon, and leaving them unattended while carrying high-value mutations is an unnecessary risk.

After the Blood Moon ends:

  • Harvest everything immediately. Once the event ends and Day begins, collect all Bloodlit crops as fast as possible and sell them before the next Night phase opens up a new PvP window.
  • Replant straight away. Getting fresh crops back in the ground quickly puts you in a good position for whatever weather event comes next.

Is the Blood Moon Worth Staying Online For in Grow a Garden 2?

Yes, without question. A single Blood Moon session where several high-value crops receive the x60 Bloodlit multiplier can generate more Sheckles than an extended period of standard farming. The challenge is simply that you cannot schedule around it. The best approach is to keep your garden prepared every night so that when the Blood Moon finally does appear, you are already in the best possible position to take full advantage of it.
