Amazon’s live-action God of War series has just delivered a massive casting shake-up: Dave Bautista is officially taking over as Kratos, replacing Ryan Hurst after an on-set injury forced the production to recast its central role. The former WWE star and Guardians of the Galaxy actor has closed his deal with Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television to become the Spartan warrior and god-killer.
The change comes after Hurst, announced as Kratos in January 2026, suffered a torn bicep during a stunt in late June. With surgery and a lengthy recovery ahead, the production has chosen a full reset rather than waiting for his return. Now, Bautista is stepping into one of gaming’s most recognizable roles.

Dave Bautista Officially Cast as Kratos in Amazon’s God of War
Deadline reported on August 20 that Bautista had officially closed his deal to play Kratos, following earlier reports in August that he was in talks for the role.
Bautista is already deeply experienced with physically demanding performances. Best known as Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, he has also appeared in Dune and Blade Runner 2049. His recent work includes The Wrecking Crew with Jason Momoa, while he is set to appear opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in Road House 2. His upcoming projects include Alpha Gang, the animated Ally, and Highlander.
His professional wrestling background could also prove valuable for Kratos. Bautista has continued training for demanding film roles, including Highlander, which required him to bulk up. With filming expected to resume in mid-October 2026, his preparation window is relatively short.

Why Ryan Hurst Was Recast as Kratos After His Injury
Hurst’s departure is directly connected to a serious production injury. The Sons of Anarchy actor, who also voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök, had already started filming when he tore his bicep performing a stunt in late June.
The injury required surgery and was expected to take several months to a year to fully recover. Hurst had also undergone extensive physical preparation and gained significant muscle mass for Kratos.
Although several episodes had reportedly been completed, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television decided that waiting for Hurst could push filming into 2027. The production therefore chose to recast the role.
There is another major consequence: none of the original footage featuring Hurst as Kratos will be retained. Scenes already filmed will be reshot with Bautista.
When Health Cuts a Performance Short: Hurst’s injury forced a major production shake-up, and health scares have interrupted other performers’ plans in unexpected ways too. Our coverage of Megan Moroney Ends Denver Concert Early Due to Illness covers a similarly sudden disruption on stage.
God of War TV Series Will Restart Production in October 2026
Production originally began in Vancouver in February 2026 under the working title Anaheim Realm. The two-season order remains intact, with the seasons planned to film back-to-back.
Preparation for Bautista’s version of the production is already underway, with filming targeted to restart in mid-October 2026. Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye is expected to return. Toye, known for Shōgun, The Boys, and Fallout, directed the first two episodes with Hurst and is expected to direct those episodes again with Bautista.
The series is led by writer, executive producer, and showrunner Ronald D. Moore. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television are producing it with PlayStation Productions and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions.
Executive producers are Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis are co-executive producers.
Behind-the-Scenes Access on Other Sets: A restart like this comes with plenty of logistics happening away from the cameras, the same kind of behind-the-scenes access fans got a glimpse of on another notable film shoot. What Amazon’s Live-Action God of War Series Will Actually Adapt
Rather than beginning with Kratos’ Greek mythology adventures, the television series focuses on the later Norse era, particularly the story established by the 2018 God of War game.
Kratos is attempting to build a new life with his young son, Atreus. Their journey begins as they travel to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ late wife and Atreus’ mother.
At the heart of the story is their complicated father-and-son relationship. Kratos wants to teach Atreus how to become a better god, while Atreus helps his father become a better human.
Kratos himself is a Spartan by birth and a god by nature. Raised in a martial culture, he eventually commanded armies in service of his homeland. His fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War, ultimately sent him into battles against mortals, creatures, and gods across the franchise.
The Amazon adaptation instead places the Norse era and Kratos and Atreus’ relationship at the center.
Departures That Reshaped Beloved Shows: A story built around reinvention and legacy characters naturally brings to mind other long-running series that had to adapt after a key actor moved on. Our piece on Why Jim Parsons Left The Big Bang Theory revisits one of TV’s most talked-about exits.
Amazon God of War Cast: Who Is Playing Atreus, Odin, Thor and More?
Callum Vinson remains attached as young Atreus opposite Bautista’s Kratos.
The supporting cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Sonya Walger as Freya, Island Austin as Thrud, Ben Chapple as Magni, Louis Cunningham as Modi, and Evelyn Miller as Gna.
Danny Woodburn plays Brok, while Jeff Gulka plays Sindri, the important dwarf brothers from the Norse-era story.
For Season 2, plans call for Atreus and Thrud to be recast with older actors to reflect the time jump connected to the events adapted from God of War Ragnarök.
Mystery Roles Fans Are Still Piecing Together: A stacked cast list like this one still leaves plenty of character details under wraps, and other major franchises are keeping fans guessing about their own new additions. Our coverage of Spider-Man: Brand New Day — Sadie Sink’s Character Mystery digs into one such unresolved casting question.
When Will Amazon’s God of War Series Premiere?
There is still no official premiere date from Amazon.
With production restarting and previously filmed material being reshot, a 2027 release now appears less likely. Based on available reporting, 2028 is considered a more realistic possibility, although that remains subject to change.
The television production delay is separate from the next major game entry, God of War Laufey, which is separately scheduled for February 2027 on PlayStation 5.
Bautista’s arrival gives Amazon’s God of War adaptation a completely new chapter. His wrestling background, action-film experience, physical preparation, and dramatic range could make him a strong fit for a Kratos who must be both an intimidating god-killer and a restrained father.
For now, though, the series is still in production. The real test begins when cameras roll again in Vancouver in October.
