Unitree Reveals ‘Superman’ Humanoid Claiming 28 MPH Sprint and 2-Meter Jump Records: “Significant Room for Further Improvement”

A Chinese humanoid robot has just made a seriously bold claim: it can sprint faster than the peak speed recorded by Usain Bolt and launch itself into a 2-metre standing high jump. Then, in footage circulating online, the same machine appears to lose the battle with its own momentum and crash into an object.

Unitree Robotics unveiled its experimental humanoid prototype, nicknamed “Superman,” on August 17, 2026, claiming a top speed of 12.66 metres per second (45.6 km/h or 28.3 mph) and a 2-metre standing high jump. But there is an important catch: these are company-reported figures and have not been independently verified under standardized third-party testing.

Unitree Superman Humanoid Robot Claims a 12.66 m/s Sprint

Unitree introduced “Superman” with a short video showing the humanoid performing a standing vertical jump before landing and accelerating into a high-speed sprint.

The company’s X post described the prototype with the striking figures:

“Standing high jump 2 m, top speed 12.66 m/s (0.85 m leg length)”

Unitree also said:

“This new machine has only been in development for a little over three months, with significant room for further improvement in the coming months.”

That three-month development timeline makes the demonstration even more eye-catching. The robot reportedly has legs measuring just 0.85 metres, yet Unitree says it can reach speeds beyond those recorded by humans.

The company has positioned “Superman” as an early-stage prototype designed to push the limits of dynamic humanoid movement, rather than as a finished commercial robot.

Is Unitree’s Superman Robot Actually Faster Than Usain Bolt?

This is where the headline gets interesting — and where the numbers need some context.

Usain Bolt completed his legendary 100-metre world-record run in 9.58 seconds in Berlin in 2009. His average speed across the race was approximately 10.44 m/s.

His fastest 20-metre section, between 60 and 80 metres, is commonly calculated at around 12.42 m/s, or approximately 44.72 km/h. Other biomechanical analyses have produced slightly different estimates, including instantaneous peak-speed figures around 12.2–12.3 m/s, depending on methodology.

Unitree’s reported 12.66 m/s therefore sits slightly above the commonly cited 12.42 m/s figure.

But that does not mean “Superman” has officially beaten Bolt in a 100-metre race.

Unitree has not published detailed information about the testing methodology, measurement system, surface conditions or whether the robot maintained that speed over a standardized distance. The demonstration therefore establishes, at most, a company-reported peak speed during a test.

The 2-Metre Standing Jump Claim Is Just as Wild

The sprint is only half of the story.

Unitree also claims that “Superman” can perform a 2-metre standing high jump. That would put the prototype above commonly referenced human standing-jump records, which are often cited at approximately 1.8–1.9 metres.

Guinness World Records lists Sweden’s Rune Almén at 1.90 metres for a standing high jump from 1980.

The Unitree video shows the robot jumping and landing upright. However, just like the sprint claim, the 2-metre measurement has not been independently verified under standardized conditions.

So, for now, it is best described as a company-reported demonstration rather than a formally certified world record.

Unitree Superman Robot Crashes After High-Speed Run

And then comes the part that made the demonstration even more dramatic.

Another video circulating online shows the humanoid accelerating rapidly through a test area before crashing into an object. Descriptions of what it hit have varied, with reports referring to an electrical box, equipment cabinet or barrier.

Some social-media posts and reports have connected the footage with a curve at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval or training associated with the World Humanoid Robot Games. However, the precise location and circumstances have not been independently confirmed by Unitree.

The footage has naturally shifted attention from how fast the robot can run to a much more practical question: Can it actually stop?

At extreme speeds, a humanoid robot has to coordinate its motors, joints, balance systems and power delivery while slowing down and responding to unexpected movements. One social-media description characterized the incident as the robot effectively trading its “remaining kinetic energy” for an electrical box after completing a high-speed curve.

Unitree has not issued a detailed public statement specifically addressing the collision.

Unitree Superman Specifications: What We Know So Far

Secondary reporting describes the prototype as approximately 170 centimetres tall, weighing around 45 kilograms, with roughly 20 degrees of freedom and a claimed runtime of approximately 1.5 hours per charge.

The machine reportedly does not have hands or conventional grippers, reinforcing its focus on speed and jumping rather than general-purpose manipulation.

Because Unitree did not comprehensively publish the complete specifications during the initial reveal, these figures should be treated as secondary-reported specifications, not a complete official specification sheet.

From Unitree H1 to a Robot That Runs at 45.6 km/h

“Superman” follows Unitree’s earlier work on increasingly dynamic humanoid robots.

The company’s H1 humanoid has previously been reported as reaching peak speeds of around 10–10.1 m/s. The new prototype’s claimed 12.66 m/s represents a significant increase over those reported figures.

Meanwhile, the wider Chinese humanoid-robot industry has been moving quickly. In April 2026, an Honor Lightning humanoid from smartphone maker Honor won the robot division of the Beijing E-Town Half Marathon. Honor’s robots took the leading places in that division, while Unitree robots also participated in the broader event.

That result is separate from Unitree’s “Superman” project and should not be attributed to Unitree.

Why Unitree’s Superman Robot Matters Beyond the World Records

The biggest takeaway may not actually be the numbers.

A humanoid robot capable of accelerating, jumping and running at extreme speeds represents a major challenge in dynamic robotics. But speed alone is not enough. A useful machine also needs to brake, turn, maintain balance, avoid obstacles, recover from instability and safely dissipate momentum.

That is why the crash footage matters almost as much as the sprint.

Unitree is presenting “Superman” as an early-stage research prototype and has itself said there is “significant room for further improvement in the coming months.”

The timing is also notable. The reveal came as Unitree was preparing to begin trading on Shanghai’s STAR Market around August 19, 2026. The Hangzhou-based company reportedly raised approximately 6.1 billion yuan, or roughly $904–905 million, in an initial public offering that was heavily oversubscribed by retail investors.

Unitree has been described as the world’s largest humanoid-robot maker by sales volume, and the company said it had produced and delivered approximately 18,000 bipedal humanoid robots across its various models as of July 2026.

The prototype reveal also coincided with the World Robot Conference in Beijing, adding to an already intense period of attention around China’s humanoid robotics industry.

Unitree Superman: World Record Breaker or Impressive Prototype?

For now, the safest conclusion is somewhere between the hype and the skepticism.

The reported 12.66 m/s sprint is slightly above the commonly cited peak speed associated with Usain Bolt’s 2009 world-record performance, while the claimed 2-metre standing jump is above commonly referenced human standing-jump records.

But neither performance has been independently verified under controlled, standardized conditions.

A short peak-speed measurement is not the same thing as completing a standardized 100-metre race faster than Bolt. Likewise, a video showing a 2-metre jump does not automatically establish an officially recognized standing-jump world record.

And the crash raises another important issue: going incredibly fast is only half the engineering problem. Knowing how to stop may be the harder part.

For now, “Superman” is best understood as an early-stage research prototype demonstrating Unitree’s claimed advances in high-speed bipedal locomotion — impressive, experimental and still very much a work in progress.
