The wait is almost over, and Once Human players finally have the answer they’ve been waiting for. When the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions launch on August 25, 2026, the strange-world survival game will bring full cross-play and cross-progression to its console release. That means PC, mobile, PlayStation and Xbox players can finally jump into the same wider multiplayer ecosystem.
For existing players, though, the biggest deal might not even be cross-play. Cross-progression means your established character and progress can move between supported platforms through account linking. So that PC or mobile character you’ve already poured hundreds of hours into doesn’t have to stay trapped on one device.
And there’s one huge catch worth knowing before you rush onto console: account linking needs to be handled carefully. Players with characters spread across multiple accounts cannot simply mash everything together into one giant roster. Some existing character data can be overwritten, making the account-linking process one of the most important things to understand before August 25.

So, how does Once Human crossplay actually work?
At launch, Once Human will connect these platforms:
- PC: Steam, Epic Games Store, Loading Bay and the Xbox app on PC
- Mobile: iOS and Android
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X|S
NetEase Games and Starry Studio have confirmed that full cross-play and cross-progression will be available from launch.
In practical terms, a PC player can team up with a friend on PS5, while an Xbox player can join friends playing on PC or mobile, subject to the game’s server and regional arrangements.
That last part matters. Cross-play doesn’t mean the entire planet gets thrown into one enormous server pool. Once Human still operates through servers and regional infrastructure, and cross-region progression is not currently supported because different regions operate from separate data centers. Players should therefore make sure their friends can access the same compatible server environment.
Cross-play and cross-progression aren’t the same thing
It sounds obvious, but these two features do completely different jobs.
Cross-play means players on different platforms can play together.
So you can have:
PC + PS5 + Xbox = one multiplayer squad.
You don’t need to own the game on the same platform as your friends just to play together.
Cross-progression, meanwhile, is about your own progress. Once the appropriate accounts are linked, supported progress can be synchronized between PC, mobile and console.
For longtime players, this is arguably the bigger win. You don’t want to spend hundreds of hours building a character on PC or mobile only to boot up the PS5 version and discover you’re back at square one.
NetEase’s console announcement confirms that cross-progression arrives alongside cross-play, making the August 25 launch much more than a simple console port.

Link your account before jumping onto console
Existing players should seriously consider getting their account situation sorted before their first console login.
On PC, open:
Settings → Account → Link Account
On mobile, the Link Account option is available through the Settings interface. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
The account-linking system is especially important for players who have used different login methods during Once Human‘s PC and mobile history. The game’s console beta guidance also provided an account-linking route for existing PC/mobile accounts.
Why bother doing this before August 25?
Because starting the console version first and accidentally selecting or creating the wrong account can create a massive headache. For an established player, the safest approach is to identify the account containing the character you actually want to keep and make sure that account is properly linked before launching the console version.
The character overwrite warning is the part you absolutely cannot ignore
Here’s where things get serious.
Existing characters on two accounts do not simply merge together.
When accounts containing existing character data are linked, the process can require you to choose which account’s data you want to retain. The account that gets overwritten can have its characters discarded.
So don’t look at account linking and think, “Cool, I’ll just combine my two rosters.”
That’s not how it works.
Anyone with meaningful progress spread across multiple accounts should stop at the linking screen and carefully review what data will be preserved before confirming the process. The official guidance recommends switching to or creating an appropriate account when necessary to preserve the character data you actually want.
Before August 25, run through this preparation:
- Open Once Human on the PC or mobile account containing your main character.
- Check exactly which account you’re using.
- Open the account-linking option.
- Confirm that this is the character data you want to preserve.
- Complete the linking process.
- Verify that the link worked correctly.
- Only then sign into the console version.
This is particularly important for returning players who have experimented with multiple login methods or created characters under different accounts.

Don’t let the console beta confuse you
There was a major difference between the 2026 console open beta and the final release.
During the final open beta, PC/mobile cross-play was not supported. Xbox and PlayStation players could still play together because the console servers were unified for the test. The official beta FAQ explicitly stated that PC/mobile cross-play was unavailable during that testing period.
That means the beta shouldn’t be treated as proof that the finished game is console-only.
The restriction belonged to the testing phase. For the full August 25 release, NetEase and Starry Studio have confirmed full cross-play and cross-progression.
PC and mobile cross-platform play already existed
Another important piece of the puzzle is that Once Human isn’t building its entire cross-platform ecosystem from scratch.
The game has already supported cross-platform functionality between PC clients and mobile. An earlier official Steam announcement explained that Loading Bay users could use the same account on mobile, while Steam and Epic users needed to link their accounts to the mobile client. Mobile-created accounts could subsequently be used on PC.
The console launch therefore represents an expansion of that existing account ecosystem rather than the beginning of cross-platform progression.
Now PlayStation and Xbox are being brought into the picture.
The August 25 release is bringing more than crossplay
Cross-play might be the headline feature, but the console launch has another major surprise: first-person perspective.
Players will be able to switch between first-person and the existing third-person camera, with the perspective change available at any time.
That could seriously change the feel of exploration, combat and base-building. Players who love the broader visibility of third-person can stick with it, while anyone craving a more traditional first-person survival experience can jump into the new viewpoint.
NetEase has also highlighted console-focused performance options.
Quality Mode targets:
- 4K resolution
- 60 FPS
Performance Mode targets:
- Up to 120 FPS
The actual experience can vary depending on the console, display and selected settings, but the choice is straightforward: prioritize visual fidelity or chase a higher frame rate.
The console release also adds controller-specific feedback, including different rumble effects and trigger resistance designed to make combat and other interactions feel more immersive.

What existing players should do before August 25
The preparation is pretty simple, but don’t rush it.
First, identify your main account. Know exactly where your primary character and progress are stored.
Next, link that account before the console launch. Use the game’s account-linking function rather than waiting until after you’ve started the console version.
Then, check for duplicate characters. Multiple existing accounts are not automatically merged.
Finally, slow down at any overwrite confirmation. Read the linking screen carefully before accepting anything that could replace existing character data.
Once everything is sorted, you’re ready for launch day.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions arrive on August 25, 2026. NetEase’s official announcement confirms the date, full cross-play, cross-progression and the new first-person feature.
New console players have a much easier setup
Starting fresh on PS5 or Xbox? Your setup is considerably simpler.
New players don’t need to migrate an existing PC or mobile character. You can create your account and begin your Once Human adventure on console.
The biggest advantage of cross-play is that your friends don’t have to be playing on the same machine. Once the console version goes live, Xbox, PlayStation, PC and mobile players can enter the broader multiplayer ecosystem together.
NetEase has also positioned the console launch as a substantial content drop rather than a barebones port. The official announcement says the console version launches with six Scenarios and a PvP spin-off, providing more than 300 hours of gameplay for console players from day one.

Is Once Human cross-progression?
Yes. Cross-progression arrives alongside cross-play. Properly linked accounts can synchronize supported progress across platforms.
Can PC players play with PS5 players?
Yes. PS5 joins the game’s wider cross-platform ecosystem at launch.
Can Xbox players play with PC players?
Yes. Full cross-play is planned for the August 25 release.
Can PS5 and Xbox players play together?
Yes. Xbox and PlayStation players could already play together during the final open beta through unified console servers. The full release expands cross-play to PC and mobile as well.
Will my PC character transfer to PS5?
Yes, provided the appropriate accounts are linked. Existing players are encouraged to complete account linking before their first console login.
Will two existing characters merge when I link accounts?
No. Two existing character rosters are not simply merged. When both accounts contain characters, the linking process can require you to choose which account’s data to retain, and characters on an overwritten account can be discarded.
Did the console beta have PC crossplay?
No. PC/mobile cross-play was disabled during the final console beta, although Xbox and PlayStation players could play together on unified console servers.
When does full crossplay start?
Full cross-play starts with the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S launch on August 25, 2026.

The bottom line for every Once Human player
The crossplay question is finally settled: Once Human is getting full cross-play and cross-progression on August 25, 2026.
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are joining the existing PC and mobile ecosystem, letting players across supported platforms team up while giving established players a route to carry their progress between devices.
The biggest thing to worry about isn’t whether crossplay exists. It’s making sure you link the correct account.
Players who have characters spread across multiple accounts need to be especially careful because existing character data doesn’t simply merge, and an overwritten account’s characters can be discarded.
Then there are the extra console goodies: a new first-person perspective, 4K/60 Quality Mode, an up-to-120-FPS Performance Mode and expanded controller feedback. Add the substantial amount of existing content arriving with the console release, and August 25 is shaping up to be a pretty huge moment for Once Human.
The apocalypse is going cross-platform. Just make sure you bring the right character with you.
