Dolly Parton is giving fans a candid update on her health while preparing for a huge new chapter in Nashville. The 80-year-old country icon says she has been through “hard times with my health” after spending years focused on caring for her late husband, Carl Thomas Dean, who died in March 2025 at age 82.
Despite the challenges, Parton is making one thing clear: she has no plans to stop working. As her Nashville museum and hotel approach their September 2026 launches, she says, “Seriously, though, even though I’m still healin’, I’m still workin’.”

Dolly Parton Reveals She’s Still Recovering From Recent Health Issues
In an exclusive PEOPLE interview published August 21, 2026, Parton explained that she had neglected some of her own health while watching over Dean.
“I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over Carl,” she told PEOPLE.
Parton stressed that her recent difficulties are not the first serious health challenges she has faced. She recalled being “down for several months with female issues” during the early 1980s.
“It’s not like I haven’t been through hard times with my health,” she said. She also pointed out that modern celebrity culture can make health stories feel even bigger because information spreads constantly across social media.
Parton joked about that transformation, saying, “I used to joke that I was the Queen of the Tabloids, but now I guess I can say I’m the Queen of Social Media AI!”
Importantly, Parton has not publicly identified a specific diagnosis for her current health issues. Her latest comments describe ongoing health concerns and recovery, while making clear that she continues to receive medical attention and work on her professional plans.

Dolly Parton’s Health Issues Recently Affected Her Dollywood Appearance
Just one week before the PEOPLE interview, Parton offered fans another glimpse into what she has been dealing with.
On August 14, 2026, she appeared through a prerecorded video during the dedication of NightFlight Expedition, the newest roller coaster at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Butterfly wings appeared behind her as she explained why she could not attend in person.
“I’ve told you before, all my fans, that I’ve had a few little health issues and sometimes I get a little dizzy and I get dehydrated. And I’m dehydrated,” Parton said.
Her Nashville doctor had advised her against travelling.
“So my Nashville doctor has kind of clipped my wings, saying, ‘You ain’t traveling this week.’ So I guess if your doctor tells you, ‘You ain’t traveling this week,’ you ain’t traveling this week.”
She also said that “all is going well on the medical end of things.”
NightFlight Expedition is Dollywood’s 11th coaster and represents what the theme park called the “largest single attraction investment in Dollywood’s history.”

Dolly Parton’s Life of Many Colors Museum Is Coming to Nashville
While her health has forced her to slow down in some areas, Parton is simultaneously moving ahead with one of her biggest Nashville projects yet: the Life of Many Colors Museum.
The museum is set to occupy the third floor of the new SongTeller Hotel in downtown Nashville, with its own dedicated entrance. The hotel is scheduled to welcome its first guests in September 2026, while museum visits are scheduled to begin September 29.
Parton said the project finally came together after she found a location that felt right.
“I am so proud of this. We found this location early one morning. I knew I wanted to do something special in Nashville, and until I saw this building, nothing ever hit me as the right thing to do,” she said.
She remembered spotting a copy of her book Songteller inside the lobby of the former office building.
“I saw a copy of my book Songteller in the lobby of what once was this office building. After touring it and seeing the location, I knew this was it.”
The museum’s official website describes it as the “largest exhibit celebrating her life anywhere in the world.”

SongTeller Hotel and Cup of Ambition Coffee Are Also on the Way
The museum is only part of Parton’s expanding Nashville plans. The SongTeller Hotel is scheduled to open to guests in September 2026, while the museum will operate as a dedicated attraction within the building.
Parton is also preparing to launch Cup of Ambition Coffee with Community Coffee. The brand is especially meaningful to her because its name comes from her famous song “9 to 5.”
“That’s a dream I’ve had for over 40 years, ever since I wrote the line about ‘cup of ambition’ in my song ‘9 to 5,’” she said. “But, you know, some dreams take longer to come to life than others.”
Cup of Ambition Coffee is expected to become available online for nationwide shipping starting in September. The range includes light, medium and dark roasts, with ground coffee and K-Cup formats expanding after the brand previously debuted at Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop.
Parton is also working on a new line of dog treats with Purina.

Dolly Parton Is Exploring Avatar Performances Instead of Simply Stepping Away
Perhaps the most intriguing part of Parton’s future plans involves how fans may experience her music.
Rather than simply ending her touring career, Parton and her team are exploring technology that could allow her to continue providing musical experiences. She said they are working with companies that create “avatar performances,” although she described the project as being in the “early stages of development.”
That means Parton’s next era could look very different from the traditional touring schedule fans have known for decades.
For now, she is balancing recovery with an unusually busy slate of projects, from the Life of Many Colors Museum and SongTeller Hotel to Cup of Ambition Coffee, dog treats and potential avatar performances.
Parton has not disclosed a specific diagnosis for her current health issues, and her recent comments about dizziness and dehydration do not establish a particular medical condition. She has also made no claim that her current issues are connected to the health problems she experienced in the 1980s.
Still, her message is clear: she is taking care of herself while continuing to build what comes next.
