Bane is finally getting the animated treatment fans have been waiting decades for. Warner Bros. Animation and DC have officially released the first trailer for Batman: Knightfall, a three-part R-rated animated movie event adapting one of the most celebrated storylines in Batman’s comic book history. Part 1 had its world premiere at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 23, 2026, and the early reception from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive.

Batman: Knightfall Release Date

Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall does not yet carry a confirmed release date, but the film is expected to arrive later in 2026 following its Annecy premiere. Release dates for Parts 2 and 3 have not been announced. Expect further details as Warner Bros. Home Entertainment moves closer to the rollout.

What the Batman: Knightfall Trailer Shows

The trailer sets the tone immediately. It opens on a visibly exhausted Batman, who tells Robin, “Gotham City needs Batman,” as Robin points out that Batman has not slept in the two days since Arkham Asylum exploded and released his entire Rogues’ Gallery onto the streets of Gotham.

Robin floats the idea of calling in “Jean-Paul” so Batman can rest. Batman refuses: “We’re all that stands between those inmates and the fall of Gotham.”

The trailer then cuts to Bane stepping out of the darkness inside Batman’s own mansion to deliver a direct threat, before a chilling voiceover line: “Let chaos reign in Gotham.”

The footage teases a Dark Knight pushed to his absolute limit, a city overwhelmed by escaped villains, and the beginning of Bane’s plan to break Batman both physically and psychologically.

What Is the Knightfall Comic Storyline?

The original Batman: Knightfall saga ran through DC Comics in the 1990s and is widely considered one of the most impactful stories in Batman’s history. The event spanned three chapters: Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd, written by Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Alan Grant, Dennis O’Neil, Peter David, and Jo Duffy, with art by Jim Aparo, Graham Nolan, Norm Breyfogle, and Jim Balent.

The story follows Bane, who systematically exhausts Batman by freeing every villain from Arkham Asylum before confronting the Dark Knight at his lowest point. With Bruce Wayne defeated, the violent and unstable Jean-Paul Valley/Azrael takes over as Batman. Bruce eventually fights his way back to reclaim the cowl.

Christopher Nolan incorporated elements of this story into The Dark Knight Rises (2012), with Tom Hardy’s Bane breaking Christian Bale’s Batman. However, Nolan mixed elements from multiple comic arcs rather than adapting Knightfall directly. This animated trilogy marks the first full faithful adaptation of the complete Knightfall saga.

Why Knightfall Is Exciting for Fans?

For anyone new to the story, Knightfall sits in the same tier as The Death of Superman and The Dark Phoenix Saga when it comes to landmark superhero comic events. It fundamentally changed Batman as a character, introduced one of his most enduring villains in Bane, and asked a question that resonated with readers for decades: what happens when the hero actually loses? The animated trilogy now gives that story the full-length treatment it has always deserved.

Why Is It Rated R?

Batman: Knightfall carries an R rating, which directly reflects the brutal, psychologically intense nature of the source material. The original comic is one of the darkest chapters in Batman’s history, built around extreme physical violence and the systematic destruction of a hero. The R rating signals that Warner Bros. Animation intends to honour that without pulling punches.

Early Reaction from Annecy

Attendees at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival viewed a screening of Part 1 alongside the trailer debut. Early social media reactions pointed to strong buzz around the film’s dark tone and its faithfulness to the source material, though a full wave of reviews is still on the way.

Where to Watch Batman: Knightfall

A confirmed streaming home has not been announced yet. Given that the project falls under Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, a release on Max is a strong possibility alongside a physical home media release. Further details are expected closer to the film’s 2026 release window.
