The long wait for more Shrek is almost over, and the first teaser trailer for Shrek 5 has officially arrived to remind everyone why this franchise never really left our hearts. Sixteen years after Shrek Forever After, the beloved ogre and his family are heading somewhere new, there is already a very funny jab at Disney, and fans have some very strong feelings about how everything looks. Here is a full breakdown of everything the trailer confirmed.

What Does the Trailer Actually Show?

The teaser reveals that Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and the family travel to a new urban location called Further, Further Away, a noticeably grittier and sketchier setting compared to the polished kingdom seen in Shrek 2’s Far, Far Away. The city environment puts the gang well outside their comfort zone, and the trailer shows them being chased by police before ending up thrown in jail. Shrek, Fiona, and his two sons Fergus and Farkle can all be seen together in the jail cell.

Where Is Zendaya’s Character?

Zendaya joins the cast as Felicia, Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, and while she is confirmed as a significant part of the film, her character is completely absent from the teaser trailer. Given that the rest of the immediate family appears together in the jail cell without her, the film may involve Felicia being separated from the group, whether captured by a villain or having run away, though nothing has been officially confirmed about her specific role in the plot.

The Frozen Joke Everyone Is Talking About

One of the most talked-about moments in the trailer features a filthy, visibly melting snowman in a dark alley who approaches Donkey and asks: “Wanna date a snowman?” The character looks distinctly similar to but legally distinct from Olaf, the beloved snowman from Disney’s Frozen, whose most iconic song includes the line “Do you want to build a snowman?” It is the kind of cheeky Disney parody that the Shrek franchise has leaned into since the very beginning, and the timing feels particularly pointed given that Frozen came out three years after the last Shrek film in 2010.

The trailer also briefly features what appears to be a green witch giving Fiona a ride, with mermaids seen beneath them in the water, suggesting further fairy tale characters and potentially more Disney adjacent references to come.

The Gingerbread Man Gets a Memorable Update

The Gingerbread Man, voiced by director Conrad Vernon, receives a notably different look in this trailer. His lower half appears significantly larger thanks to what appears to be new gumdrops and icing additions, a joke that has already generated its own wave of reactions online.

Why Does the Animation Look Different?

One of the most divisive elements of the trailer is the visual style. Many fans have pointed out that the characters now feature smoother, more modern designs with larger eyes and a noticeably cleaner look compared to the slightly grittier, more textured style of the original four films. Some fans have welcomed the change, while others have been vocal in their disapproval, with some going as far as calling it “AI slop” and saying it has “stripped all identity” from the original characters. Others have defended it, arguing the updated animation looks genuinely good and that the jokes in the trailer are solid.

Who Is Behind Shrek 5?

Directors Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn both have deep roots in the franchise. Vernon was part of the directing team on the Academy Award nominated Shrek 2, as well as Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted and Monsters vs. Aliens, and has voiced the Gingerbread Man across the entire Shrek series. Dohrn worked as a writer and artist on Shrek 2 and 3, served as Head of Story on Shrek Forever After, and voiced Rumpelstiltskin in that film. He also co-directed the first Trolls film and directed Trolls World Tour and Trolls Band Together.

Producer Chris Meledandri leads Illumination, the studio behind the Super Mario, Despicable Me, and Minions franchises. Gina Shay, who produced Shrek Forever After and the Trolls franchise, returns as producer. Brad Ableson, known for Minions: The Rise of Gru and work on The Simpsons, serves as co-director.

What About a Donkey Spinoff?

Eddie Murphy has previously confirmed that a solo Donkey spinoff film has been greenlit and is expected to enter production after Shrek 5 wraps. No release date has been announced for that project yet.

The Long Road to Shrek 5

Shrek Forever After released in 2010, making Shrek 5 a 17-year gap between mainline Shrek films. The franchise stayed alive through the critically acclaimed Puss in Boots spinoffs, with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in particular earning widespread praise for its animation and storytelling. Shrek 5 also suffered multiple delays before landing on its current June 30, 2027 release date, having previously been scheduled for Christmas 2026 before being pushed to summer.

With one full year still to go before the film arrives in cinemas, this teaser is clearly just the beginning of what DreamWorks has planned for the marketing campaign.
