The rat transformation mount stands out as one of the more unusual movement tools in Terraria. It does not rely on speed, flight, or combat power. Instead, it rewards careful exploration and clever positioning. To unlock it, you need a specific item tied to jungle progression and chest exploration.
This guide explains exactly how you can obtain the rat transformation mount, what it does, and why it fits into practical gameplay.
In This Post:
What the Rat Transformation Mount Is
The rat transformation mount comes from an item called the Cursed Piper Flute. When you use it, your character transforms into a rat. The transformation changes how you move and interact with terrain rather than boosting raw speed or damage.
While transformed:
- You move faster than walking but slower than top speed mounts
- You cannot fly
- You can fit through very small spaces
- You can climb vertical walls by holding movement directions
This makes the mount especially useful for tight cave systems and narrow tunnels where normal movement feels restrictive.
Where to Find the Cursed Piper Flute
You can only obtain the Cursed Piper Flute from one source:
Ivy Chests in the Jungle

These chests appear in the underground jungle biome. You need to locate the jungle, explore downward, and search the ivy-covered chest areas. The flute does not drop from enemies and does not appear outside this chest pool.
Once you open an Ivy Chest and find the Cursed Piper Flute, you unlock access to the transformation mount.
How to Use the Rat Transformation
After obtaining the Cursed Piper Flute:
- Place it in your hotbar
- Use it like a standard item
- Your character transforms into a rat instantly

You can switch back and forth between forms as needed. This flexibility lets you adapt mid exploration without committing to a permanent movement change.
