How to Rename Your Ship in Windrose

Your ship is your identity in Windrose, and the default name it comes with rarely feels like yours. The good news is that renaming your ship is straightforward once you know where to look, and there is no limit to how many times you can change it.

What You Need Before You Can Rename Your Ship in Windrose

You need a Wharf before the ship renaming option becomes available. The Wharf is the ship management structure in Windrose, and without it you cannot access the Customization menu at all. The Wharf unlocks during the “How My Sea Adventure Began” quest, which starts after you complete the “I Need a Bigger Boat” questline given by Doctor Galen.

So if you have not progressed that far yet, focus on completing that questline first and the renaming option will become available naturally.

How to Build the Wharf in Windrose

If you have the questline unlocked but have not built your Wharf yet, here is how to do it:

  • Step 1: Press B to open the Building Panel.
  • Step 2: Navigate to the Crafting and Utilities section.
  • Step 3: Select Wharf and place it close to the water. The Wharf will not function if it sits too far from shore.

Once it is built, you can interact with it to manage and customise any ship you own.

How to Rename Your Ship in Windrose

With the Wharf in place, follow these steps to rename your ship:

  • Step 1: Go to your Wharf at your base and interact with it.
  • Step 2: Open the Ship Selection tab and select the ship you want to rename.
  • Step 3: Click Manage Ship in the bottom right of the Wharf window.
  • Step 4: Press D to switch to the Customization tab, located to the left of the Cargo and Gear tab.
  • Step 5: Find the name field in the upper left of the Customization screen and enter your new ship name.
  • Step 6: Confirm your choice.

Tip: If your ship is not showing up at the Wharf, press K to recall it. This teleports your ship directly to the dock so you can access it straight away.

Your chosen name will appear physically on the ship itself, not just in menus. There is no limit to how many times you can rename your ship, so you can change it whenever you want.

What Else Can You Customise at the Wharf?

Renaming is just one part of the ship customisation available through the Wharf. The same Customization tab also lets you change:

  • Sails and their colour
  • Flags and emblems
  • Hull appearance

These are cosmetic options and do not affect your ship’s combat or sailing performance. However, the Manage Ship screen also has a separate gear section where you can equip functional upgrades like Boarding Party Gear, Hull Bracing, and cannons, which do affect how your ship performs.

Ship Name Ideas

If you are stuck on what to name your vessel, here are some popular options across different styles:
