Blizzard just dropped one of the biggest surprises of BlizzCon 2026: Diablo V is officially in development, and the next mainline Diablo game is targeting Spring 2029.
But the release window might actually be the least shocking part.
This time, we aren’t entering Sanctuary to stop the apocalypse.
We’re entering after it already happened.
During the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, Blizzard revealed a radically different direction for the action RPG series. In Diablo V, Sanctuary has already fallen, humanity has been devastated, the previous heroes have failed, and Diablo rules over the remains of the world.
Blizzard’s summary of the entire premise is brutally simple:
“Sanctuary has fallen. Diablo won.”
And honestly, that one sentence tells us just how different this next chapter is going to feel.

Diablo Has Already Conquered Sanctuary
Previous Diablo games have generally placed players on the front line of an ongoing battle against the forces of Hell. There was always something to stop, someone to save, or some catastrophic event that could potentially be prevented.
Diablo V flips that formula completely.
The battle is already lost.
According to Blizzard, Diablo has conquered Sanctuary and transformed the fallen world into a stepping stone for his attempt to invade the Heavens. From his throne in Westmarch, the Lord of Terror controls the people and souls of Sanctuary and turns them into weapons in the Eternal Conflict.
And Diablo isn’t being saved for some dramatic final encounter.
He’s there from the start.
Blizzard says the Lord of Terror will actively shape the story, the world and the player’s journey throughout the game.
The story takes place approximately 100 years after the events of Diablo IV, according to Diablo game director Brent Gibson. That huge time jump also gives Blizzard room to continue expanding Diablo IV through seasonal content before Diablo V eventually takes players into this future version of Sanctuary.
So instead of asking whether the apocalypse is coming, Diablo V asks something much darker:
What do you do when the apocalypse has already won?

You Play as the Heir to Westmarch
Players will step into the role of the Heir to Westmarch, travelling through the charred remains of a kingdom that has effectively become an outpost of Hell.
Humanity hasn’t completely disappeared, but very few people have managed to survive Diablo’s rule.
Some have surrendered.
Others have joined his cults.
And some have become something far more dangerous.
Blizzard has revealed that corrupted humans can become Dread Commanders, powerful beings capable of rivaling the forces of Hell themselves.
The player character also isn’t just another random survivor.
The protagonist has a mysterious connection to Diablo, and that connection makes them both a threat to the Lord of Terror and uniquely vulnerable to his influence.
With the legendary champions from previous games gone, the story shifts toward a completely new kind of hero.
You’re not trying to reclaim a world that is merely under attack.
You’re fighting for a home that has already been taken from you.

Sanctuary Will Keep Changing Around You
One of the coolest parts of Blizzard’s reveal is that the ruined state of Sanctuary isn’t simply there to make the story look darker.
The world itself is being designed to feel unstable.
The Western Continent has been devastated by Diablo’s rule, filled with ruins, corruption and the growing influence of Hell.
But Blizzard is also introducing a procedurally changing landscape.
That means terrain, points of interest, monsters and rewards can change when players return to previously explored locations.
In other words, you won’t necessarily experience an area exactly the same way every time you travel through it.
That procedural approach matches the game’s story surprisingly well.
Diablo hasn’t simply conquered Sanctuary and sat on his throne.
He’s actively reshaping it.
So even familiar territory could potentially feel different when you come back.

Forget Traditional Town Hubs — Your Caravan Is Home
Another major change is how players will move through this broken version of Sanctuary.
Instead of relying primarily on traditional towns and conquered strongholds, players will build a caravan of survivors and allies that travels with them through the scorched remains of the world.
This isn’t just a vehicle for getting from one location to another.
The caravan will function as a mobile community, with companions who have their own stories, histories and motivations.
The characters travelling alongside you will also serve as companions and vendors.
Blizzard has already revealed some unusual members of this survivor community, including a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a stranded Treasure Goblin who is searching for meaning in a world where greed has effectively lost its purpose.
That gives Diablo V a very different foundation from earlier games.
Instead of repeatedly returning to established settlements as the main centers of progression, the journey itself becomes part of survival.
And considering the state of Sanctuary, that caravan might end up being one of the few places players can actually call home.

Demon Hunter and Monk Return, While Plague Knight Joins the Fight
Blizzard has revealed the first three classes coming to Diablo V:
- Demon Hunter
- Monk
- Plague Knight
And yes, the Demon Hunter and Monk are both coming back.
The Demon Hunter returns as a ranged-focused fighter built around mobility, hunting demons and attacking from the shadows. Blizzard’s early presentation shows the class using twin crossbows and moving rapidly across the battlefield.
The Monk also returns to the mainline series, bringing its martial-arts combat style back to Sanctuary. The class combines close-range attacks with holy power, keeping physical combat and spiritual abilities at the center of its identity.
Then there’s the completely new class.

Meet the Plague Knight
Blizzard describes the Plague Knight as the embodiment of “walking death.”
The heavily armored class spreads disease and pestilence across the battlefield before consuming those effects to gain power.
So while the Demon Hunter focuses on ranged mobility and the Monk combines martial arts with holy abilities, the Plague Knight appears designed around turning disease itself into a weapon.
But don’t assume these are the only classes.
Blizzard specifically calls Demon Hunter, Monk and Plague Knight the first three classes it will reveal.
The studio has not yet announced the final launch class count.
More information about additional classes, combat, progression and build possibilities is expected as development continues.

Diablo V Is Bringing Back Diablo II-Style Itemization
Here’s another interesting twist: while the world of Diablo V is moving forward, Blizzard is looking backward for inspiration when it comes to gear.
The developers say items are being designed to be readable, memorable and worth chasing across hundreds of hours.
The game’s itemization is being inspired by Diablo II, including experimentation with stat requirements for gear.
Inventory management is also becoming more traditional, with larger items once again taking up more inventory space.
And if you’re a fan of collecting gear sets, there’s good news:
Gear-based sets are returning.
The crafting system is being developed with inspiration from Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred, while Diablo II-style Runes and Runewords are also returning.
That creates an interesting mix of old and new.
You’ve got a Sanctuary that can change procedurally, a travelling survivor community and a radically different story premise — but some of the game’s gear philosophy is deliberately looking back toward Diablo II.

Diablo V Will Support Multiplayer
For anyone wondering whether this entire nightmare can be experienced with friends, Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo V will fully support multiplayer.
Players will be able to experience the game solo or with friends.
However, Blizzard isn’t revealing exactly how multiplayer will work yet.
The studio has not confirmed whether Diablo V will retain specific systems from Diablo IV, including its approach to shared-world encounters, world events or other multiplayer features.
So multiplayer is confirmed, but the actual structure is still under wraps.
Blizzard plans to begin providing regular Diablo V updates in 2027, which should give players a much clearer picture of how these systems are coming together.

Diablo Is Also Getting an Animated Netflix Series
And Blizzard wasn’t finished with Diablo news at BlizzCon.
Alongside Diablo V, the company announced that an animated Diablo series is in development with Netflix.
Details are extremely limited right now.
Blizzard has not revealed the series’ release date, story, characters, cast or animation studio.
The only confirmed detail so far is that the animated series will be set in the world of Diablo, with more information coming later in development.
It’s another major expansion of the franchise beyond games, arriving during a huge milestone year for the series.
Because 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of Diablo.

Diablo Has Now Passed 130 Million Players
Blizzard also revealed another massive franchise milestone.
According to the company, the Diablo franchise has surpassed 130 million players worldwide across its history.
That milestone arrives as Diablo celebrates its 30th anniversary and Blizzard begins setting up what it describes as the next era of the franchise.
The anniversary is also being celebrated inside Diablo IV through Season of Hell’s Legacy.
The season brings back major figures and elements from Diablo’s history, including Deckard Cain and the Prime Evils Baal, Mephisto and Diablo.
Season of Hell’s Legacy began rolling out on September 15, 2026.
But there’s more coming to Diablo IV before Diablo V takes over.

Diablo IV Still Has More to Come Before Diablo V
Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo IV is not being abandoned while Diablo V is developed.
The studio says there are currently no additional Diablo IV expansions planned, but seasonal content will continue.
According to game director Brent Gibson, Blizzard still has room to continue developing the story through those seasons before the events of Diablo V.
The major Lord of Hatred story arc has concluded, while Blizzard has indicated that future storytelling will move into a Story of Terror.
That creates plenty of room between Diablo IV‘s current events and the enormous 100-year jump that eventually leads into Diablo V.
So no, Diablo V isn’t simply replacing Diablo IV overnight.
Blizzard is using the years leading up to 2029 to continue expanding Sanctuary before players eventually enter the conquered world of the next mainline game.
More Anniversary Direct Speculation: 2027 class reveals aren’t the only calendar date fans are circling — some franchises have their own long-awaited anniversary moment coming up. Diablo IV Amazon Class Pack Arrives in 2027
There’s also a new class coming to Diablo IV before Diablo V arrives.
The Amazon class pack is scheduled for the first half of 2027.
The Amazon comes from Skovos and brings back classic weapons such as the bow and javelin, alongside new gameplay archetypes.
And that’s not the only major Diablo IV update already in players’ hands.

Diablo IV Is Now on Nintendo Switch 2
Diablo IV has officially arrived on Nintendo Switch 2.
The Diablo IV: Age of Hatred Collection launched on September 15, 2026, and includes:
- Diablo IV
- Vessel of Hatred
- Lord of Hatred
So while the wait for Diablo V is going to be a long one, Blizzard clearly has no shortage of Diablo content planned for the years ahead.
Diablo V Is Still a Long Way Off
Here’s the part players need to keep in mind: Diablo V is still early in development.
Despite the huge announcement and the ambitious ideas Blizzard has already revealed, plenty of major details remain unknown.
The full class lineup hasn’t been announced.
Combat and progression details are still being developed.
The multiplayer structure hasn’t been fully explained.
The endgame systems haven’t been completely revealed either.
Blizzard plans to start sharing regular updates in 2027, so there should be plenty more reveals before the game eventually launches.
But the foundation is already clear.
We’re getting a Diablo game where Diablo has already won.
We’re playing as the Heir to Westmarch, travelling through a Sanctuary ruled by Hell. The world can change around us, a caravan of survivors will become our travelling community, Demon Hunter and Monk are returning, the new Plague Knight is bringing disease-based combat into the series, and the item system is taking inspiration from Diablo II with stat requirements, larger inventory items, sets, Runes and Runewords.
Multiplayer is confirmed.
A Netflix animated series is in development.
And Diablo IV will continue receiving seasonal content while Blizzard builds toward the next chapter.
Most importantly, Diablo V is officially coming in Spring 2029.
The Lord of Terror has already won.
Now it’s our turn to find out what Sanctuary looks like when there’s almost nothing left to save.
