Laura Owens Pleads Guilty in Clayton Echard Fraud Case After Years of Legal Drama
Under the plea agreement entered in Maricopa County Superior Court, Owens pleaded guilty to two counts of fraudulent schemes and artifices, one count of perjury and one count of taking the identity of another.
The first two counts relate to conduct involving Echard, while the perjury and identity-related counts concern a separate case involving another man, Gregory Gillespie. The agreement calls for the other 10 felony charges against Owens to be dismissed.

Laura Owens Was Eventually Facing 14 Felony Charges
In May 2025, a grand jury indicted Owens on seven felony charges connected to the Echard paternity dispute.
Those charges included one count of fraudulent schemes and artifices, one count of forgery, four counts of perjury and one count of tampering with physical evidence.
Owens initially pleaded not guilty.

In November 2025, prosecutors announced a second indictment involving Gregory Gillespie. According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, Gillespie dated Owens in 2021 but ended the relationship after their third date. Owens later claimed she was pregnant by him.

What Happens to Laura Owens at Sentencing?
Owens is scheduled to return to Maricopa County Superior Court on October 23, 2026.
Under the plea agreement, one fraudulent-schemes count has no agreed sentence. The judge has discretion to impose probation or a prison sentence of up to 12.5 years.
The remaining three counts call for probation.

Gregg Woodnick, who represented Echard and another victim in the case, reacted after the hearing.
“Clayton’s exhausted by this. I’ve been spending time with him on and off for years since this first happened. I remember the first day I met him, when Laura was, you know, faking pregnancy essentially with twins and knowing that she had done that before to at least one other victim.”
Woodnick also described what he characterized as a repeated pattern of behavior.
“It’s been a lot of years of watching Laura do a lot of damage to a lot of men. She faked medical records. She fakes medical conditions. She’s faking pregnancy. She faked twin pregnancies multiple times, and it finally caught up to her.”
Describing the courtroom atmosphere, Woodnick said:
“Sitting in the courtroom next to Clayton and one of the other victims was a lot today was, I think, emotional for the two victims that were present in the courtroom. It was a little emotional for me. It’s been quite a ride and watching her finally come in and sit there in court and acknowledge the major felonies and the harm that she’s done was a big deal.”
He also said he expects some form of incarceration:
“I do anticipate that she’s going to have some sort of jail consequence, and she deserves jail consequence. Society would be better if she were consequence by being in jail for a while so that we could have some assurance that there wouldn’t be other victims.”
Those comments represent Woodnick’s characterization of the case. Owens’ actual sentence will be determined by the court.

Clayton Echard’s Three-Year Nightmare Reaches a Major Turning Point
For Echard, the guilty plea comes after more than three years of legal proceedings.
After Owens was indicted in 2025, the former Bachelor star described the development bluntly:
“This nightmare is over.”
The criminal proceedings continued until Owens accepted the August 2026 plea agreement.
