Nintendo Switch owners who turned their console into a portable anime machine are about to lose one of their most convenient streaming options. Crunchyroll is officially ending support for its Nintendo Switch app on October 30, 2026, putting those late-night handheld anime marathons on a very real countdown.
The app has already disappeared from the Nintendo eShop for new downloads, and while existing users can keep watching for now, the shutdown date is getting closer. Even more awkwardly for Nintendo fans, moving to the newer Switch 2 does not currently solve the problem either.
| Date | Event | Official Detail |
| 2022 | Crunchyroll app launches on Switch | The app became available through the Nintendo eShop |
| October 30, 2026 | Nintendo Switch support ends | Crunchyroll app will no longer be available |
| August 2026 | App removed from eShop | New users can no longer download it |
| Present | Switch 2 situation | No Crunchyroll app is currently available |
Streaming shakeups aren’t the only thing anime fans have to keep track of this season: a fan-favorite arc just dropped an explosive new trailer ahead of its fall premiere. Crunchyroll Nintendo Switch App Shutdown Date Is Officially October 30, 2026
Crunchyroll has already begun informing affected subscribers through email notifications, thanking users for being part of the Crunchyroll community while directing them toward other supported devices.
The company’s message leaves little room for confusion:
“The Crunchyroll app for Nintendo Switch will no longer be available beginning October 30, 2026.”
For anime fans who have spent years watching simulcasts and working through massive backlogs directly from their Switch, that is the date that matters most.
Crunchyroll originally launched its Nintendo Switch app in 2022, one year after Sony acquired the anime streaming service. The arrival gave Switch players a simple way to access Crunchyroll’s huge anime library without switching to another device.
And that convenience was kind of the whole appeal.
The Nintendo Switch could sit in a dock and work like a traditional TV entertainment device, then instantly become a handheld screen for watching anime somewhere else. Couch? Bed? Bus? Airplane? Even that suspiciously comfortable bathroom session? The Switch had the flexibility covered.
That setup is now approaching its final episode.
Losing an app is a bummer, but at least anime merch is having a genuinely good year: a beloved shonen series just teamed up with a major sneaker brand for a collection worth checking out. The Crunchyroll App Is Already Gone From the Nintendo eShop
There is another important detail for anyone thinking about downloading the app before the deadline: it is already too late for new users.
Crunchyroll has removed the Nintendo Switch app from the Nintendo eShop, meaning it can no longer be downloaded by new users. However, subscribers who already have the app installed can continue using it until October 30, 2026.
After that date, access will be cut off completely.
Crunchyroll did include some reassurance in its subscriber message, confirming that the service itself is not disappearing.
“The good news: The Crunchyroll experience continues everywhere else. You can still stream the world’s largest dedicated anime library on crunchyroll.com, the Crunchyroll mobile app, and more than 30 other global and regional platforms and devices – with the same account and subscriptions you already have.”
So the anime library remains. Existing subscriptions remain. User accounts remain.
What is disappearing is the Nintendo Switch as a dedicated Crunchyroll streaming option.
Crunchyroll has not provided a reason for ending support on the console. At the moment, there is no official explanation about whether the decision is connected to usage numbers, maintenance, technical considerations, platform strategy, or something else entirely.
For Switch owners, that means there is no hidden answer yet—just a very specific deadline.
While one streaming era winds down, another anime just got the green light to keep going: a growing isekai series is officially returning, with voice recording for its next season already underway. Where Can Nintendo Switch Anime Fans Watch Crunchyroll Now?
Crunchyroll says subscribers can continue using the service across more than 30 global and regional platforms and devices while keeping the same accounts and subscriptions.
Supported options include:
- Smartphones and tablets
- PCs and computers
- Smart TVs
- PlayStation consoles
- Xbox consoles
- Other supported streaming platforms and devices
That gives anime fans plenty of alternatives, but there is one detail that makes the situation especially strange for Nintendo users.
Crunchyroll does not currently have an app available for Nintendo Switch 2.
That means upgrading from the original Nintendo Switch to Nintendo’s newer console is not currently a direct replacement for anyone who wants to keep their anime streaming setup inside Nintendo’s ecosystem.
For players who use their Switch as an all-in-one gaming and entertainment device, that is probably the most frustrating part of the entire shutdown.
Switching devices is one kind of transition anime fans are dealing with, but manga readers are facing a much bigger one: a long-running arc may finally be nearing its conclusion after a pivotal recent chapter. Crunchyroll Leaving Switch Makes the Original Console a Little Less Convenient
Crunchyroll’s departure also fits into a broader trend of streaming services gradually reducing support for the original Nintendo Switch.
The shutdown is particularly noticeable because the Switch’s biggest advantage was never just raw hardware power. Its hybrid design made it incredibly convenient. Users could watch something on a television while docked, then pick up the console and continue in handheld mode without needing a separate device.
Crunchyroll helped turn that flexibility into an anime-friendly setup.
Now, anyone who relies on the Switch for anime will need another screen once the October 30 cutoff arrives. That could mean reaching for a smartphone, opening a laptop, using a smart TV, or dusting off a PlayStation or Xbox.
The anime itself is not going anywhere. The Switch version of the experience is.
For dedicated binge-watchers, that makes October 30, 2026, a date worth remembering. Your Nintendo Switch can keep being a gaming machine, obviously—but one of its anime streaming options is about to log off for good.
Losing a streaming option is frustrating, but there’s still plenty coming to fill that watchlist this fall: a deadly survival series is returning with a fresh cast and new theme songs.
