Why Holly Marie Combs Retired From Acting After Charmed
Combs’ decision was not driven by one single moment. Family became a major priority, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she found herself at home with her children during an especially chaotic period.
The actress shares three sons with her ex-husband David Donoho: Finley, 22, Riley, 19, and Kelley, 17. She has been married to Mike Ryan since 2019 and lives in Washington state.
Reflecting on those years, Combs described the atmosphere at home as intense as her children moved through their teenage years.
“It was a lot of family. During COVID, we had three teenagers. Well, it was three teenagers and a preteen in the house, and it was just mayhem and chaos.”

“The stuff that I was getting and coming across my desk was just nothing that I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is really great. I need to do this.’”

“And being in, you know, that 40 to 50 range, the job pool gets even smaller and smaller. And I feel like the roles get a little less interesting.”

Although she calls herself retired, the actress has not completely closed the door on acting. Her youngest son Kelley is still in high school, and Combs suggested that his graduation could potentially change her plans.
“My two youngest are still in high school, [and] I think once Kelley has graduated successfully, I might consider it. Obviously, I’ll be sitting around with a lot more time on my hands.”

From Picket Fences to Charmed and Pretty Little Liars
Long before becoming Piper Halliwell, Combs started working as a child actor and earned her SAG card at just 14. She rose to prominence as Kimberly Brock on Picket Fences, which ran from 1992 to 1996.
Her career-defining role came in 1998, when she joined Charmed as Piper Halliwell. The supernatural series became a major television hit and ran for eight seasons before ending in 2006.
Combs later appeared as Ella Montgomery on Pretty Little Liars, playing Aria Montgomery’s mother for six seasons from 2010 to 2017. Despite the relatively small age difference between Combs and Lucy Hale, who played Aria, Combs embraced the casting.
