An iPhone 17 Pro has just survived a fall that makes every ordinary phone drop test look almost laughably small. Protected only by RHINOSHIELD’s AirX Ultra-Cushioned Phone Case, the smartphone was released from 30,607 metres (100,418 ft 8 in) above Earth and recovered fully functional, earning a Guinness World Records title.
The record-breaking stunt took place at the Esrange Space Center in Kiruna, Sweden, on June 24. RHINOSHIELD PTE. LTD. teamed up with UK-based Sent Into Space LTD. to send the phone into the stratosphere using a high-altitude balloon. It was then remotely released with no parachute, heating system or secondary protective layer. Under Guinness World Records rules, the case itself also had to hit the ground first.

iPhone 17 Pro Survives a 30,607-Metre Drop Without a Parachute
The stunt officially set the record for the “highest drop of a mobile phone in a phone case (natural landforms)”.
The numbers are wild. The drop point was more than three times the typical cruising altitude of commercial airliners, around 9,000 metres (30,000 feet), and more than three times the height of Mount Everest, which stands at 8,848 metres (29,031 feet).
There is one important technical detail, though. While Guinness World Records describes the stunt as a phone being “dropped from space,” 30,607 metres is still below the Kármán line at 100 kilometres, the conventional boundary of outer space. Technically, this was a stratospheric or near-space drop rather than a true outer-space fall.
After release, the iPhone spent approximately 25 minutes falling back toward Earth. Along the way, it faced temperatures between –40°C and –60°C and atmospheric pressure of roughly 1% of sea-level pressure. Eventually, it slammed into remote, uninhabited Swedish wilderness. There was no parachute waiting at the end.

But surviving the fall was only half the mission. The team still had to find the phone.

The iPhone Survived — But Finding It Took More Than Five Hours
Tracking technology reduced the expected landing zone to approximately 2 kilometres, but that was hardly a simple search. The restricted wilderness covered roughly 5,200 to 5,600 square kilometres, an area around twice the size of Luxembourg.
Because of helicopter payload restrictions, the initial recovery team could only include four people, excluding the pilot: two Sent Into Space engineers carrying tracking equipment and two videographers. More than five hours passed before they finally located the phone.
Mujou Hsiao, Brand Experience Manager at RHINOSHIELD, summed up the recovery challenge:
“Finding a single phone in a wilderness that vast was like finding a needle in a massive haystack. The tracking was narrowed down to 2 km, but it still took us more than five hours to find it.”
The team also had to deal with unpredictable outdoor conditions. Hsiao said:
“It was a mix of intense relief and awe! We trusted the science behind AirX, but outdoor elements were completely out of our control – unpredictable crosswinds, descent speeds, landing surfaces, and the sheer pressure of time, as we were only in Kiruna for a week.”
The payoff was huge. The recovered iPhone 17 Pro reportedly remained externally intact. Officials confirmed it could still be powered on and off, make calls and take photographs. Guinness World Records adjudicator Juliet Dawson verified the achievement after reviewing video evidence, witness accounts and the phone’s condition and functionality.

From a Normal Phone Case Test to a Stratospheric Record Attempt
The idea began as a durability challenge for RHINOSHIELD’s AirX case. According to Hsiao, co-founder and CEO Eric Wang challenged the team after AirX launched. What started as a conventional product test quickly escalated.
Hsiao explained:
“AirX was a breakthrough that our Design & R&D labs spent over a year perfecting. Creating a top-of-the-line protective case out of a single material without compromising durability required incredible creative engineering. When Eric saw what the team built, he asked, ‘Why not test its limits with a Guinness World Records attempt?’”
The original proposals included 50 consecutive 15-metre drops and a “most durable mono-material case” attempt. The team then began considering hot air balloons, skydiving and weather balloons. Wang ultimately pushed the concept even higher: “If we’re going high, let’s go as high as humanly possible.”
“That’s how the stratospheric drop was born.”
From there, RHINOSHIELD and Sent Into Space developed a custom payload involving remote-release technology, GPS and flight tracking. The phone was deliberately dropped into an uninhabited area so nobody would be endangered by the falling device.

Why the RHINOSHIELD AirX Case Was Put to Such an Extreme Test
The contrast with ordinary testing is almost absurd. Hsiao said standard laboratory drop tests are around 1.2 metres, while RHINOSHIELD regularly performs extreme drops from its sixth-floor office, approximately 23 metres. The stratosphere sits around 26,000 to 36,000 metres — more than 1,000 times higher than that office building.
Guinness World Records rules made the challenge even tougher by prohibiting parachutes and requiring the case to contact the ground first. RHINOSHIELD’s R&D team therefore carried out sub-zero freeze tests and atmospheric pressure testing while preparing for the worst possible conditions. The experiment took roughly a year to prepare, including development of the custom payload.
The AirX uses a mono-material design that RHINOSHIELD says is 100% recyclable. Inspired by car airbags and air-cushion technology used in sports footwear, the case features impact-isolating air cushioning, a 360° cushioning air chamber, a three-point compression structure and ShockSpread™ material. RHINOSHIELD says the technology can isolate up to 81% of impact force under standard test conditions and offers significantly extended durability against repeated impacts.
For this experiment, however, there was no extra protection. The AirX case was completely on its own. RHINOSHIELD has promoted mono-material design since 2017 as part of its effort to enable full recyclability and reduce plastic waste from mixed-material phone cases.

RHINOSHIELD’s “Space-Grade” Protection Push
The Guinness World Records attempt was also intended to challenge the idea that sustainable products have to sacrifice durability. RHINOSHIELD says its goal is to demonstrate that performance and circular design can coexist. The company says its cases contain no detectable levels of bisphenols or PFAS.
Eric Wang stated:
“We were not content to stop at conventional military-grade drop protection; we wanted to go further and take on the challenge of ‘space-grade protection.’ For us, this world record is more than a validation of our product’s performance. It demonstrates to the industry that circular design does not have to mean compromise—it is a path worth pursuing, one that can drive innovation and set even higher standards.”
Hsiao also described the broader goal:
“The phone case industry generates a ton of plastic waste because most cases use mixed materials that can’t be recycled. At RHINOSHIELD, we’ve used 100% recyclable mono-materials for years, but people often assume single-material cases can’t offer heavy-duty protection.”
He added:
“We wanted to prove that you don’t have to compromise. Instead of settling for standard ‘military-grade’ protection, we went for ‘Space-Grade.’ Dropping AirX from the stratosphere and finding it completely undamaged proves that sustainable circular design can tackle the most extreme conditions on (and off!) Earth. Hopefully, this shows that mono-material design principle is totally achievable, and we’ll start seeing everyday products adapt to it in the future.”
Sent Into Space co-founder Dr. Chris Rose stressed that survival was never guaranteed. The team faced extreme cold, low pressure, high-speed descent, communication interference, remote terrain and the difficult tracking and recovery process. Only recovering both the AirX case and the phone and confirming the device remained functional could verify the result.
The AirX has also been associated with the 2026 iF Design Award and Red Dot Design Award, while RHINOSHIELD has released space-themed designs inspired by the record.
So no, this wasn’t technically an iPhone dropped from outer space. But a 30,607-metre fall, around 25 minutes of free fall, temperatures reaching –60°C, pressure at roughly 1% of sea level, a remote wilderness landing and more than five hours of searching still produced one seriously ridiculous phone durability test — with the iPhone 17 Pro switching back on and continuing to take pictures.
Not exactly your average drop test.
