Fans waiting for Kaitlin Olson’s Morgan Gillory to return to High Potential this fall are in for a longer wait. Despite becoming ABC’s top-rated drama during the 2025-26 television season, High Potential Season 3 has been pushed to midseason in early 2027, leaving its usual Tuesday night slot open for another crime drama.
That replacement is R.J. Decker Season 2, which officially premieres on September 15, 2026, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, immediately following the Season 35 premiere of Dancing with the Stars. The move gives ABC a returning scripted series for the fall while saving one of its biggest dramas for a major programming window in early 2027.

Why High Potential Season 3 Was Delayed Until 2027
The decision might look strange on paper, especially considering just how well High Potential performed. The Kaitlin Olson-led crime drama finished the 2025-26 season as ABC’s top drama and ranked among the strongest broadcast entertainment series in both total viewers and the Adults 18-49 demographic.
The numbers make the delay even more interesting. According to 35-day multiplatform rankings, High Potential averaged roughly 16 million viewers, putting it among the most-watched scripted shows on broadcast television.
Season 2 concluded in April 2026, while ABC renewed the series for a third season in March. Yet when the network unveiled its Fall 2026 schedule in May, High Potential was noticeably absent from the September lineup.
Instead, ABC placed it alongside Will Trent and The Rookie on its midseason slate.
That does not signal that the series is struggling. ABC’s strategy is essentially about timing.
Executives have indicated that holding High Potential until early 2027 should give the series a more consistent and less interrupted run. Previous seasons faced breaks because of holiday programming and scheduling disruptions involving lead-ins. A midseason launch could therefore give Morgan Gillory and the rest of the team a steadier stretch of episodes.
The timing also puts High Potential closer to several major first-quarter television events, including the Super Bowl, the Grammys and the Oscars. Rather than putting all of its biggest scripted shows on the fall schedule at once, ABC is spreading them across the television year.
For now, though, there is still one major piece missing: ABC has not announced an exact premiere date for High Potential Season 3.

R.J. Decker Season 2 Becomes ABC’s Fall 2026 Tuesday Night Crime Drama
With High Potential sitting on the sidelines, R.J. Decker is stepping into the spotlight.
ABC announced on July 27, 2026, that Season 2 will premiere on Tuesday, September 15, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, directly after the Season 35 premiere of Dancing with the Stars.

What R.J. Decker Season 2 Is About
Scott Speedman stars as R.J. Decker, a disgraced newspaper photographer and former convict who becomes a private investigator in South Florida after serving prison time for a crime he did not commit.
Inspired by Carl Hiaasen’s novel Double Whammy and created by Robert Doherty, the series blends crime, mystery, comedy and drama as Decker tackles strange cases while attempting to rebuild his life and reputation.

Season 2 Starts With a Major Mystery After the Finale
The new season picks up directly after the explosive events of Season 1.
R.J. and his team had revisited the incident that originally landed him in prison. They recovered his missing SD card, which contained an incriminating photograph linking Victor Ochoa’s men to a murder. The evidence was enough to send Victor to prison.
Then everything changed.
Victor Ochoa was found dead in his swimming pool, turning what looked like a major victory into another mystery.
Season 2 will continue R.J.’s effort to completely clear his name while he and Emi deal with threats connected to the previous case. ABC is also teasing a new collection of colourful crimes across South Florida, giving the series plenty of room to expand its crime-comedy formula.

ABC Is Giving the Premiere a Dancing with the Stars Crossover
ABC is also making the Season 2 launch feel like a larger fall television event.
The R.J. Decker premiere will feature appearances from Dancing with the Stars professionals Jenna Johnson and Val Chmerkovskiy, along with Season 33 champion Joey Graziadei.
The crossover makes sense strategically because R.J. Decker follows directly after Dancing with the Stars Season 35 on September 15. ABC is effectively turning Tuesday night into a connected launch for both shows.
For High Potential fans, however, the message is simple: Morgan Gillory is not gone. She is just being saved for later.
ABC’s Fall 2026 strategy is spreading its biggest scripted hits across the television calendar rather than launching High Potential, Will Trent and The Rookie together. That could ultimately give High Potential a stronger midseason platform and help ABC maintain original scripted programming for more months.
Until ABC reveals the official Season 3 premiere date, viewers will have to wait a little longer to see Kaitlin Olson return as Morgan Gillory.
