In Hollow Knight: Silksong, every new tool changes how you approach both combat and exploration. Some tools make Hornet more powerful, while others give her new ways to move through Pharloom’s dangerous world. The Scuttlebrace falls into the second category. It’s not about raw strength—it’s about mobility, survival, and style.
If you’re wondering how to unlock the Scuttlebrace and why it’s worth using, here’s a clear guide.
How to Get the Scuttlebrace in Silksong?
You won’t find the Scuttlebrace right away—it’s tied to the second act of the game, after you’ve made some progress in the Underworks and Citadel areas. Here’s the path step by step:

- Reach Songclave – From the Citadel, keep moving left until you find an elevator that needs the White Key. Continue exploring upward and to the right to reach Songclave, where you’ll pick up the White Key and ring the bell inside the First Shrine. This turns Songclave into a hub full of NPCs and quests.
- Head Down to Whiteward – With Songclave set, return to the elevator and travel down into Whiteward. This section pushes you deeper into the Underworks and leads you to your next big upgrade.
- Unlock the Clawline Ability – Here, Hornet gains Clawline, a grapple-style ability that lets her latch onto points and swing across gaps. You’ll need this ability to reach the Scuttlebrace vendor.
- Find the Twelfth Architect – Go back to the Underworks bench where you hear an NPC speaking. Use your new Clawline ability to climb up to the grapple point, dash across, and you’ll enter the Twelfth Architect’s Workshop.
- Buy the Scuttlebrace – The Twelfth Architect sells the Scuttlebrace for 140 Rosaries and 1 Craftmetal. Make sure you’ve collected enough—Rosaries can be farmed from enemies, but Craftmetal is rarer and usually hidden or given as rewards.

What the Scuttlebrace Does in Silksong?
The Scuttlebrace is a Yellow Tool, and its main purpose is to give Hornet a spider-like retreat move.
- Effect: Allows Hornet to scuttle backward quickly, creating distance from enemies.
- Controls: Press RT/R2 on a controller, or Down + C on a keyboard. Hold the button to keep scuttling, and you can even climb walls while doing so.
- Why it’s useful:
- Helps you dodge big enemy attacks by retreating out of range.
- Lets you quickly reset distance during tense fights.
- Makes exploring vertical areas easier when combined with Clawline.
- Helps you dodge big enemy attacks by retreating out of range.
It takes a little practice to use smoothly, but once you get the rhythm, it adds a whole new layer of movement to Hornet’s toolkit.
Why the Scuttlebrace Stands Out
Unlike straightforward tools that give you more damage, the Scuttlebrace focuses on control and positioning. It’s especially useful for players who like a defensive or evasive playstyle. Instead of charging into danger, you can slip away, reset, and strike again on your own terms.
Outside of combat, the wall-crawling mechanic opens up creative ways to explore Pharloom. Some areas may even feel designed with Scuttlebrace movement in mind.
