There’s a rhythm to Hollow Knight: Silksong that feels almost musical. Each moment of Hornet’s journey unfolds like a symphony in three movements — rising, swelling, and finally, descending into a haunting silence. Team Cherry’s long-awaited sequel carries this structure through its narrative, splitting the experience into three distinct Acts, each introduced by a title card and marked by major shifts in tone, difficulty, and lore revelation.

Act I: Pharloom — The Beginning of the Thread

The story begins where mystery first takes hold: in the land of Pharloom, a kingdom both radiant and rotting, calling Hornet to ascend through its silken labyrinths. This Act opens immediately after the game’s cinematic prologue, placing the player in control as Hornet awakens in a strange new world.

Here, the focus is discovery. Pharloom’s regions — the moss-veiled peaks, the clockwork cities, the caverns lined with glowing silk — all serve as the stage for Hornet’s rebirth as both prisoner and savior. Act I guides players through the early game’s tutorial-like phase while revealing fragments of the kingdom’s hierarchy and the elusive Citadel of Song, a place whispered to be the heart of Pharloom.

Unlock Condition:
Act I begins automatically after the opening cutscene. Progressing through Pharloom, gathering key items, and advancing Hornet’s abilities lead naturally toward the gates of the Citadel, setting the stage for the next chapter.

Act II: Citadel of Song — The Echo of Ascension

When Hornet reaches the Citadel of Song, the tone of the game shifts. Gone is the sprawling wilderness — in its place stands a towering structure of echoing halls and divine melody. Act II begins after defeating either The Last Judge or Phantom, both serving as threshold bosses who guard the Citadel’s entrance.

Within these walls, Hornet learns to navigate the intricate web of politics, faith, and music that defines the Citadel. The central goal here is to master the Threefold Melody, a power rooted in sound and silk that grants access to the kingdom’s pinnacle. The Citadel becomes both a sanctuary and a crucible, testing Hornet’s resolve against foes who wield not only strength but purpose.

For many players, this Act may culminate in the game’s first ending, where Hornet fulfills her duty and the credits roll — a bittersweet harmony that marks a false finale. Yet, as with all songs of Pharloom, echoes linger.

Unlock Condition:
Act II begins upon entering the Citadel after defeating The Last Judge or Phantom. Complete the Citadel’s trials and learn the Threefold Melody to finish the game’s first major ending.

Act III: Abyss — The Thread Unravels

After the credits fade and the illusion of completion breaks, a new thread appears. Reopening the save file reveals the final chapter — Act III: The Abyss. The tone here is darker, more oppressive. Pharloom, once gleaming, is now consumed by the Void.

To reach this Act, players must complete the Silk and Soul Task, a late-game questline that binds Hornet’s destiny with the ancient fabric of Pharloom’s creation. Armed with the Needolin, she faces Grand Mother Silk, a being woven into the very foundations of the world. This climactic encounter tears open the heart of the kingdom — and the truth beneath it.

Act III transforms the world dramatically. Entire regions crumble. Familiar paths become sealed by blackened webs. Void-afflicted enemies roam the ruins, their attacks more vicious, their health multiplied. Even minor foes now pose deadly threats.

Survivors huddle in makeshift camps — Marrow, once a bustling hub, lies in ruin, and Bone Bottom is nearly obliterated. The Wormways, the lifelines of travel, pulse with hostile Plasmium, turning exploration into a desperate struggle.

The finale builds toward a confrontation with Lost Lace, the embodiment of Hornet’s deepest ties and regrets. Defeating her grants access to the true ending, a conclusion that weaves together every thread of the Silksong — sorrow, strength, and transcendence.

Unlock Condition:
Act III unlocks after completing the Silk and Soul Task and defeating Grand Mother Silk. Upon reopening the save file post-credits, the world shifts to the Void-infested version of Pharloom, signaling the start of the final Act.

Notable World Changes in Act III

  • Many regions become inaccessible due to structural collapse or corruption.
  • Enemies and bosses can become Void-afflicted, gaining new attack patterns and enhanced stats.
  • All afflicted damage is doubled, turning each encounter into a brutal test of skill.
  • Void Masses begin to appear, acting as hazards or lore remnants.
  • Bone Bottom lies in ruins, while a survivor camp emerges in Marrow.
  • The Wormways are overrun with Plasmium, limiting fast travel and forcing riskier routes.

Is There an Act IV in Hollow Knight: Silksong?

As of now, Team Cherry has not announced or confirmed the existence of an Act IV in Hollow Knight: Silksong. The game’s narrative structure appears to conclude decisively with Act III: The Abyss, which features the true ending and final boss sequence.

While the developers have been known for their secrecy and surprises — especially in the original Hollow Knight with hidden endings and post-launch expansions — there’s currently no official indication of a fourth Act or any planned continuation beyond Act III.

Still, given Team Cherry’s history of adding intricate post-game content and lore expansions, fans continue to speculate that Silksong could one day receive an extended narrative, either through downloadable content or a future patch. For now, however, Hornet’s story closes its silken thread with the end of the third Act — a finale as haunting as it is complete.

A Kingdom in Three Movements

Viewed as a whole, Hollow Knight: Silksong unfolds like an intricate musical composition — Pharloom as the overture of discovery, Citadel of Song as the crescendo of revelation, and Abyss as the haunting finale. Each Act not only reshapes the gameplay but deepens the emotional texture of Hornet’s story, transforming her from a survivor of Hallownest into a myth woven in silk and shadow.

The three Acts are more than just stages of progression — they are mirrors of growth, decay, and transcendence. In the end, the world of Pharloom doesn’t simply fall silent. It sings its final, sorrowful note — and Hornet stands as the echo that remains.
