BTS has done it again. After nearly four years away, the seven-member group returned with their album ARIRANG and lead single “SWIM” and the charts responded instantly. “SWIM” debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 while ARIRANG simultaneously hit Number 1 on the Billboard 200, making BTS the first group ever to debut both a song and an album at the top of these charts on multiple occasions.
“SWIM” Debuts at Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100
“SWIM” is BTS’s seventh song to reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100, joining a remarkable list that includes “My Universe” with Coldplay (2021), “Permission to Dance” (2021), “Butter” (2021), “Life Goes On” (2020), “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” with Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo (2020), and “Dynamite” (2020).
Billboard noted that BTS holds the most Number 1s among groups in nearly half a century, since the Bee Gees achieved nine chart-toppers between 1971 and 1979. However, in the all-time group rankings, the Beatles still lead with 20 Number 1s, followed by the Supremes with 12, the Bee Gees, the Rolling Stones with eight, and BTS.
What makes this even more significant is that Billboard’s chart methodology has been adjusted in recent years in ways considered less favourable to fan-driven acts like K-pop artists yet BTS topped the charts regardless.
ARIRANG Breaks Billboard 200 Records
ARIRANG debuted with 641,000 equivalent album units, marking the largest opening week for an album by a group since the Billboard 200 began measuring by units in December 2014.
Of those units, 532,000 came from pure sales, giving BTS the biggest sales week for a group album in more than a decade.
This is also BTS’s seventh Number 1 on the Billboard 200 — a number that feels anything but coincidental for a seven-member group.
BTS and RM Thank ARMY
The group did not waste any time showing gratitude. On their X account, BTS posted: “‘SWIM’ debuted #1 on the HOT 100!” and told fans: “We’re always grateful for your love and support.”
RM took to Instagram Stories to thank ARMY, writing “Sendin my luv and gratitude” over a repost of Billboard’s announcement. He also shared a separate, captionless story reposting Billboard’s coverage of ARIRANG topping the Billboard 200.
Global All Kill: Every Major Chart Covered
BTS did not stop at two Number 1s. The group achieved a “Global All Kill,” topping Billboard Hot 100, Apple Music Global, Spotify Global, Melon Top 100, YouTube Music, Line Music Japan, Hanteo, Billboard 200, and Oricon Japan simultaneously.
The album recorded 641,000 units on the Billboard 200 and 541,000 units on Oricon Japan, while Hanteo reported 3.9 million sales.
On the Billboard Global 200, BTS currently holds nine of the top ten spots — placing them alongside Taylor Swift as the only artists ever to achieve that in a single week. Additionally, BTS became the first act ever to claim all top ten spots on the Global Excl. U.S. chart.
All 14 tracks from ARIRANG also debuted on the Global Spotify Weekly Top Songs Chart, each recording over 26.4 million streams — marking the biggest K-pop album debuts of 2026.
Behind the Album: Diplo on Making ARIRANG
Producer Diplo played a central role in shaping this album. He worked with all seven BTS members at Conway Studios in Los Angeles for roughly two months, going through approximately 80 tracks before narrowing down the final selection.
Every BTS member has a writing credit on the album, with RM credited on every single track. Diplo described the group as highly hands-on, noting that they arrived with clear ideas about sounds, concepts, and collaborators — shaping every part of the record themselves.
Why This Comeback Feels Different
BTS paused group activities for about four years while members fulfilled their mandatory military service — a period during which some male K-pop stars have struggled to resume their careers in a competitive industry.
Coming back to Number 1s across every major chart, with a record-breaking album and a global tour on the horizon, confirms that the hiatus did nothing to slow their momentum.
Social Media Reaction
News mentions of BTS across the Asia-Pacific region surged by over 570 percent, while social media mentions jumped 257.3 percent between March 17 and 23.
Japan led the regional conversation with 278,000 mentions, followed by South Korea with 133,000 and India with 102,000. The Philippines ranked fourth with 82,100 mentions, just ahead of China at 81,700.
Fan reactions across platforms ranged from celebration to vindication. One fan wrote: “When BTS announced their hiatus, the media swore they were done. BTS came back, dropped the comeback, and obliterated the charts, a global all-kill. Unstoppable. Untouchable.”
ARIRANG World Tour: Dates and Scale
BTS will kick off their ARIRANG World Tour on 9 April 2026 in Goyang, South Korea, covering 82 dates across 34 cities in 23 countries, with performances running through 2027.
The tour includes stops across Asia, Europe, North America, and Latin America, with a two-day Manila stop scheduled for March 2027.
The tour is already being described as one of the largest global tours ever undertaken by any artist.
BTS returned after four years, broke Billboard records with both their album and lead single, topped every major global chart, and are now heading into one of the biggest world tours in music history. The numbers, the records, and the ARMY’s response all tell the same story — this comeback is as big as it gets.
